In the lead up to the election, Lukashenko was facing strong competition from Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, an almost accidental candidate, who, with the help of a team of powerful and creative women, mustered tends of thousands of supporters. When Lukashenko won, the citizens of Belarus took to the streets.
