About Central Curios:

I make hand turned and carved wands of various exotic woods, and write original lore and personalities for each piece… I started creating wands for friends just because it was a fun project I could work on, and my friends really enjoyed the results. But after a few wands, I found that I could reach a point of true relaxation in the simplicity of woodworking. I loved the sense of total quiet in the whirring of the lathe and scraping of the wood. Just me and the work, and nothing else matters. I have always enjoyed history and mythology, and as a child of the 90s I grew up with the works of J.K. Rowling. I fell in love with her wand lore, and went through the same research process to create original lore for the exotic woods that I use.

About Danny’s stand up:

Born in Los Angeles but raised in Anaheim, California. Danny was just a typical guy who enjoys anything nerdy related to now doing comedy. His first debut in comedy was at the 2008 Anime Expo Last Comic standing that was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Placing 1st place movtivated him to expand his talent towards comedy and began to expand outside the convention.

In 2011, he started his own comedy production called “Big Laughs in Little Tokyo” and as of Nov 2013, he has produced 8 shows out of his own funds. During his visit at 2012 Anime Los Angeles convention at the Marriott LAX Hotel. He meet with a non-profit organization called “Azure Lorica” and they decided to support Danny as a comedian which then evolved into something greater then a comedian. June 2013 is when he founded and became the chair of an Indie convention, Ninja-Con.

It’s Thanksgiving week! The Gathering takes a moment to talk about the important things in life: Alan Moore and little bit of video games! Stop on by to hear all about what they are doing for this holiday and more!

QoW: In light of this very important holiday in American history, what is your favorite Christmas movie?

How to play:

SETUP:

Separate the white cards (Perks) from the red cards (Red Flags) and place them in stacks on the table where all players can reach them.

Pick a player to be the Single. The player who’s been on the most dates makes a great first Single.

Everyone else takes 4 Perks and 3 Red Flags.

THE PERKS:

Using what you know about the Single, pick two Perks to create the best date you can for them.

Starting with the player to the left of the Single, each player plays their two Perks and reads the cards out loud to the table.

THE RED FLAGS:

After all Perks are read, and beginning once again with the player to the Single’s left, each player plays a Red Flag onto the player to their left.

DEBATE:

Now the players argue why the Single should pick their character to date and reject the other candidates. The Single must imagine that they will date this person long-term, and will be expected to do all of the things they would do while dating anyone else.

SELECTION:

Based on the arguments, the Single chooses a date. The chosen player keeps their Red Flag from that date. Use these cards to keep track of points. The player to the left of the Single is now the new Single.

DO IT ALL NIGHT LONG:

After each round, all players discard their hands and draw back up to four Perks and three Red Flags and start a new round. When either the Perk or Red Flag decks run out, shuffle the discard pile and use that as your new deck.

HOW TO WIN:

For a short game, play twice around the table. For a longer game, say that the first player to seven points wins. Or just play until none of you want to go on a date ever again.

Well, Con season is over and we ended it on a pretty good note in Pasadena, CA at the Pacific Media Expo. We reflect on this past year and discuss what really makes and breaks conventions! Join  newcomers Edward and Norman, old-jerky Tyler, and host Kevin in this conned-out episode of ShuKai! We recorded our episode on the second day of the convention, and we have some additional thoughts on the convention. We do have video footage that may or may not be turned into a video on YouTube.

These opinions are purely Tyler’s and not the other three staff who attended. First off, Saturday was fun I do want to make sure that was said and the stance from the episode. However, the things I do want to point out from this weekend:

The convention was very, very low attended, especially Sunday. The only 2 places we saw a relatively good amount of people were the Filipino Martial Arts Tournament and the Fashion Show. After talking to exhibitors and some of the (actually pleasant) volunteers, the biggest issue was moving the convention from near LAX to Pasadena. Which takes me to number 2.

They had one TINY Exhibit Hall and a smaller artist alley. There were around 18-20 booths in the Exhibit Hall and Artist Alley didn’t have many artists there. It was mostly products like pillows, wallets, and collectibles. I don’t want to rag on the amount of exhibitors, but the expo put them in separate rooms which made the convention look small and boring. The smarter thing to do would be to put them in the same room to make it look more exciting and worth people’s time. The two tiny rooms made it feel useless to walk through more than 2 times.

The voice acting guests there wasn’t a bad selection, like our good and talented friend, Joe Ochman was there and Ezra Weisz, Bob Klein, Corina Boettger, Valerie Arem, and a few more. You can see the full list here. Now, it’s actually nice when small cons have guests at all, but the guests were put in front of the exhibit hall, which was awkward, and gave more reason to not go back into that tiny room after one or two walkthroughs because they rotated the voice actors and you wanted to stick around to see who was next. Also, most of them were only there one day (unless they wanted to come back the next day as attendees).
