  • [Voice Journalling] Journalling, Processing Emotions & Creating Your Own Success | Episode 059 Rory Adams

People used to just write in a diary and call it "keeping a diary" now a new trend in "journalling" is increasing in popularity, voice journalling however is a slightly old idea being brought up to date with modern technology.

One of the people pioneering this is Rory Adams who has created the app "Sound Off" which allows you to....sound off.... about whatever you like, the app not only acts as a place for all your recordings it also gives you prompts to inspire thoughts and feelings to come out and has a plethora of content designed to help with specific issues that you might be working on or goals you might be setting.

In this episode I chat with Rory about the app itself, why it came about and how he has gone from working with some huge names in showbusiness (Dynamo and Neil Patrick Harris to name just a couple) to creating a voice journalling app.

Sound off is only available on iPhone at present but there is a wait list to join if you would like it on android - head to trysoundoff.com to get it.

  • [Self-Development] How I Saved My Own Life, One Day At A Time | Episode 057

Life can sometimes feel dark, terrifying, and relentlessly awful - bad things can happen often through no fault of our own and we find ourselves in a situation where we simply don't know how to feel happy or positive about the future. I know, I've been there.

However, every day for the last 2 years (since 25/1/2020) I've taken just 5 minutes out of my day to do the same thing, I've done it on good days, bad days and every day in between EVERY day without fail.

And this simple task is to just write down all of the positive things that have happened in that day no matter how difficult they are to find.

    Listen to find out more.

  • (Mindset Change) Boundaries - How to Set, Maintain and Defend Them | Episode 055

Boundaries - How to Set, Maintain, and Defend them

If you’ve got to the point in life where you might describe yourself better as a doormat rather than a human being, or you get simply told that “you’re too nice” then you’re in the right place.

The boundaries that we set in our lives are the difference between being trampled all over or standing up for ourselves and how we are going to accept being treated.

If you haven’t already then I’d really strongly recommend checking out this brief blog about the types of boundary that you might consider setting.

But why is setting boundaries so important?

Well, this is best explained by explaining the boundaries that you already have firmly set in your head without even thinking about it.

    The boundaries you already have

I think it would be generally safe to say that the house/flat which you own/rent you’d consider to be “yours”, you live there, your stuff is there and you spend the majority of your time there. If one day whilst the front door was open a stranger walked in and sat on your sofa and started watching Netflix you’d quite rightly be freaked out and ask them to leave.

This unlikely scenario is an easy example of boundary which you already have, you know how to maintain it (keep the door shut) and you know how to defend it (ask people to leave, call the police etc).

I appreciate this is a weird example but it is very easy to understand.

This is an example of a physical boundary.

    Here’s another.

When a private number calls you and you don’t answer, that is an example of a communication boundary.

The boundary is that you only answer the phone to people you know, you maintain it by not answering your phone and you defend it by blocking/reporting the number as spam.

In terms of structure this is actually no different to deciding whether you are going to put up with someone talking down to you or any other boundary you might want to set.

The application is the same, just the boundary itself changes.

Let’s be clear on exactly what a boundary is though.....

  • [Relationships] The Most Important Ingredient in a Successful Relationship (You'll never guess it) | Episode 054

When relationships end people tell their close friends and family who rally around them and give them tea, biscuits and normally the same bit of advice.

“You should spend some time by yourself before starting anything new” or words to that effect.

This is normally followed by the person ignoring this and jumping at the first person who shows them a bit of attention or ankle, and before they know it they find themselves in another relationship which doesn’t have the best chance of success again.

To be clear, I’m not saying that if you haven’t spent any time alone then your next relationship is doomed and you can still increase your chances of it being a success by doing one very complex yet simple thing.

Love yourself.  Listen in full to find out why.

  • [Mindset Change] The Necessity of Suffering: Why Things Have to Go Wrong in Life | Episode 053

In the funny, moving and downright chaotic series The Good Place there is a moment in it which genuinely made me think hard.

The show, if you haven’t seen it, is all about the afterlife and essentially the existence of “heaven/The Good Place” and “hell/The Bad Place” and what qualifies people to be in either.

I’m someone who hates spoilers so will not ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

At one point some characters arrive in The Good Place and are met with someone of the most influential, compassionate, kind and brilliant people from history who have been there since they passed.  In The Good Place they can do anything, have anything and nothing ever goes wrong.

    And guess how everyone feels?

    Bored.

In fact so bored that they want to die, but they can’t because they’re already dead - so they’ve been condemned to an afterlife of “perfection”.

I found this so interesting and alarmingly accurate.

People speak about winning the lottery so that they could buy this, have that, do this etc without any burden, troubles or responsibility but is that what they really want? In this vlog I’m going to be discussing why suffering is actually necessary in order for us to enjoy life.

  • [Mindset Change] An Alternative to Positive Thinking (Because Sometimes That Feels Impossible) | Episode 052

Positive thinking is one of the latest things that you simply must do if you want your life to be better apparently.

You’ll see it in people’s instagram bios - “positive thinking only”, on dating profiles you’ll see “no negativity allowed”, and people will insist that they’re a positive thinker and that is the only people they want in their lives.

And that must be simply wonderful for them and although this sounds sarcastic as hell I am genuinely pleased that these people are able to live in this manner.

Constant positive thinking is hard work if you’re someone who simply isn’t used to doing it, there isn’t a switch in your head that you flick and can instantly let go of all the negativity in your life.

That’s why in this blog I’m going to be presenting a much better alternative to just thinking positively all the time.

But first I have a question.

Is Constant Positive Thinking Actually Good for You?
