This week, we welcome Dr. Michael Jerrett, an esteemed professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, to The Hamilton Review Podcast.

It's been just over a month since the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. In the span of one day, thousands of people lost their homes, thousands were displaced indefinitely and the cities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades were burned to the ground.

The toxins in the air are heavy and the question on everyone's mind is: "How does the air quality impact our health and how do we navigate through this challenging time to keep ourselves and our children safe?"

Dr. Michael Jerrett is an internationally recognized expert in Geographic Information Science for Exposure Assessment and Spatial Epidemiology. He is a professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the Jonathan Fielding Chair in Climate Change and Public Health. Dr. Jerrett earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto (Canada).

For the past 22 years, Dr. Jerrett has researched how to characterize population exposures to air pollution and built environmental variables, how to understand the social distribution of these exposures among different groups (e.g., poor vs. wealthy), and how to assess the health effects from environmental exposures. Over the last decade, Dr. Jerrett has also studied the contribution of the built and natural environment to physical activity, obesity, and several health outcomes. In 2009, the United States National Academy of Science appointed Dr. Jerrett to the Committee on “Future of Human and Environmental Exposure Science in the 21st Century.”

The committee recently concluded its task with the publication of a report entitled "Exposure Science in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy." In 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency appointed Dr. Jerrett to the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Sub-Committee for Nitrogen Oxides.

From 2014 to the present, Dr. Jerrett has been named to the Thomson Reuters List of Highly Cited Researchers, indicating he is in the top 1% of all authors in the fields of Environment/Ecology in terms of citation by other researchers.

In 1985, Mrs. Coretta Scott King chose Dr. Carson to edit and publish a definitive, multi-volume edition of her late husband’s speeches, sermons, correspondence, publications, and unpublished writings. "The Autobiograpy of Martin Luther King, Jr." was brought to life by Dr. Carson and is a book to be cherished and added to all collections.

Dr. Clayborne Carson, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor of History, emeritus, at Stanford University, has devoted his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the human rights movements inspired by Coretta and Martin King, Mohandas K. Gandhi, and other visionaries.

His award-winning first book, In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s, was published in 1981 and remains the definitive study of the courageous activists and organizers who challenged the strongholds of segregation. In 1985, Mrs. Coretta Scott King chose Dr. Carson to edit and publish a definitive, multi-volume edition of her late husband’s speeches, sermons, correspondence, publications, and unpublished writings.

In addition to publishing numerous other books and scholarly articles, Carson has also reached broader audiences as a senior advisor to the Eyes on the Prize series and his contributions to more than two dozen subsequent documentaries. After launching the online Liberation Curriculum for K-12 students, Carson founded Stanford’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute in 2005 to disseminate King-related educational resources to a global audience. 

After retiring as the King Institute’s Director, Carson has continued his online and multi-media educational efforts by establishing The World House Project to collaborate with other human rights advocates to realize King’s vision of a global community in which all people can “learn somehow to live with each other in peace.”

Catherine Ruth Pakaluk is an American economist and social philosopher at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Pakaluk is author of the acclaimed ethnography Hannah’s Children: The Women Quietly Defying the Birth Dearth (Regnery, 2024), a multidisciplinary account of American women choosing to have large families against the global trend to sub-replacement fertility.

Her work has been featured in The New Yorker, Slate, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and more. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. The mother of eight children, she is married to American philosopher Michael Pakaluk. They split their time between suburban Maryland and New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Dr. Sarah Schnitker is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Baylor University. She holds a Ph.D. and an MA in Personality and Social Psychology from the University of California, Davis, and a BA in Psychology from Grove City College. 

Dr. Sarah Schnitker studies virtue and character development in adolescents and emerging adults, with a focus on the role of spirituality and religion in virtue formation. She specializes in the study of patience, self-control, gratitude, generosity, and thrift.  Schnitker has published more than 75 peer-review articles and edited chapters, and she has procured more than $10 million in funding as a principal investigator on multiple research grants. Schnitker is an Associate Editor for Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Research in Personality, and a co-editor of the forthcoming Handbook of Positive Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality.

She is a dedicated mentor, having served as dissertation advisor for more than 20 doctoral students, whom she helps to cultivate intellectual virtues alongside scientific competencies. She is the recipient of the Virginia Sexton American Psychological Association’s Division 36 Mentoring Award and the Student International Positive Psychology Association Mentor Award.

Dr. Deborah Lynn is a Board-Certified psychiatrist, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. She is on the clinical faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, teaching at UCLA for over 20 years.

Her early career was spent investigating the biology of mother-infant separation, ADHD, temperament, and an in depth investigation of personality development. Dr. Lynn has been in private practice in Westwood, California for over 20 years.

She teaches at UCLA and the New Center for Psychoanalysis. She also works as a consultant for City of Hope, addressing psychiatric issues in a consultation/liaison modality in the pediatric oncology population. Dr. Lynn is a graduate of Northwestern Medical School, University of Chicago, and University of Wisconsin, Madison for Psychiatric Residency, and UCLA Child and Adolescent for Child and Adolescent Fellowship and Research Fellowship.

She is a long time member, instructor, and senior candidate at the New Center for Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles. She is a faculty member of Reiss-Davis Child Study Center.
