   Angelo Sardonia was born in 1911 in Poultney, Vermont and moved to Amsterdam as a young boy.  His nickname was “Susie.”  Unlike Johnny Cash, he apparently enjoyed the name.

   Perhaps Sardonia had a crush on a girl named Susie.  Sardonia’s daughter Maryann Salm said the nickname could have come after her father formed a band in the 1930s, Susie’s Washboard Band also known as Susie’s Swingsters.  Other band members were Joe Iannotti, Dennis “Junior” Hasenfuss and Jim “Dale” Dallesandro.

   The Swingsters were a hit at the 1930 Sportsmen’s Show in Amsterdam and at Leggiero’s gas station on the South Side where the band drummed up business Wednesday nights in the Depression.

   They played out-of-town gigs, including the Schine Theatre in Ilion.  Pacelli said Schine, based in Gloversville, wanted the band to perform at all its upstate theaters but the deal never finalized.  The group disbanded in the 1940s.

   Sardonia worked at Chalmers Knitting Mill and its successor Montco, heading the knitting room, the dye house and maintenance.  He also owned a tavern named Susie’s on Bridge Street across from the mill.  He was married to Helen Reichel and they had a son and two daughters.

   In World War II Sardonia edited the South Side Servicemen’s News to keep soldiers far away up to date on local happenings. 

   Salm said, “Dad was never drafted.  I think The Servicemen's News was a way he could help.  That little newspaper was quite an undertaking.  It took contributions, and social functions to raise money.  The Recorder was also a great help to my Dad.”

Salm said the newsletters were funny and sad, “It was as though you met someone on the street you knew and stopped to talk.”

   The war literally came to Sardonia’s home on October 13, 1943.  That night a twin-engine Army transport plane crashed in a rural section of Amsterdam’s South Side as the plane’s four-man crew parachuted to safety. Remarkably, there were no injuries. The plane was on a flight between Rome and Schenectady when its engines went out.

   Captain John F. Pope, the last to exit the plane, was found wandering on Dewitt Street. He apparently had landed on the roof of Sardonia’s house or on the nearby porch of Charles Frohlich.

   After the war, Sardonia was instrumental in building the Fifth Ward Memorial Park on Bridge Street.

   Sardonia served almost 20 years as Fifth Ward Alderman, from 1944 to 1948 then from 1958 to 1973, when he lost an election to Lawrence Morini. 

   Sardonia’s nephew Michael Chiara was impressed that his uncle always stood when he spoke at the Common Council, while most members stayed seated during their speeches.  

   Longtime friend Bert DeRose recalled that in one campaign, Sardonia organized a Kettle Band, young people banging on tin cans and buckets drumming up votes for Sardonia. 

   After 36 years of marriage, Helen Reichel Sardonia died in 1968.  In 1972, Sardonia married Margaret Schultz.  Angelo Sardonia died at age 76 on July 3, 1987.

   Sardonia’s great granddaughter Theresa Day said, “I can remember the day he died.  I was only four or so, hearing on the radio someone talking about it, me unknowing at the time, big news in Amsterdam. I really miss that man.”

The glove industry in Fulton County was explored in displays and programs called 2019 the Year of the Glove.  Fulton County historian Samantha Hall-Saladino, a Gloversville native, discusses this project.

Samantha Hall-Saladino is the Executive Director of the Fulton County Historical Society in Gloversville and serves as the Fulton County Historian. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in History and English from Russell Sage College and a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of New Hampshire. Over the past decade, Samantha has worked with museums across the Capital Region and along the seacoast of New Hampshire, including Strawbery Banke, the American Independence Museum, and the Albany County Historical Association at Ten Broeck Mansion. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Public Historians of NYS (APHNYS) and the Sacandaga Valley Arts Network (SVAN).

Documentary film makers scouting Mohawk Valley

   A three-person Florentine Films video crew spent time in the Mohawk Valley in early September scouting locations and shooting video for possible use in a historical documentary film series on the American Revolution.

   Florentine, based in New Hampshire, is the production company affiliated with Ken Burns that has created PBS documentary series including the Civil War, Country Music and the Roosevelts, among many others.

   Norm Bollen, chairman of the board of directors of Fort Plain Museum, met with a Florentine producer and showed her some Revolutionary War sights in the Mohawk Valley.

   “And they came back with a film crew,” Bollen said.  “We went out at 6 am. They like to do a lot of sunrise and sunset shots.  It was pretty foggy the morning we were shooting. They were taking some nice shots of the Palatine Church.  They really liked that.”

   Built by Palatine German Lutherans in 1770, the church, between Nelliston and St. Johnsville, was spared from destruction in a 1780 Revolutionary War raid led by British Loyalist leader Sir John Johnson.

   Bollen said the filmmakers “were actually kind of excited about this stuff.”

   “They texted me they are coming back,” Bollen continued. “Some things I can’t talk about but they are interested in the area.” 

   Bollen hasn’t seen the script.  He wonders where the Mohawk Valley will end up in the documentary series. 

   Bollen said, “It’s a quality company and they do great documentaries.  So we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’re going to get some good honorable mentions in there.” 

   Bollen has sent Florentine Films information on how the Revolution was a civil war in the Mohawk Valley.  British loyalists who had escaped to Canada joined Native Americans and British soldiers in conducting devastating raids on settlements in the valley.  Fighting continued here for a year and a half after the 1781 battle of Yorktown in Virginia. 

   And Bollen said the Mohawk Valley was important during the Revolution because it was the pathway to the Great Lakes and the west.  

   The Fort Plain Museum and Historical Park, located on a hilltop off Route 5 S just west of the village, was founded in 1961.  Several of the key players in the museum organization include Bollen, Brian Mack and Wayne Lenig who all began working on archeological digs at the site of the fort when they were in their teens.

   The village of Fort Plain was originally named after the fort, an important military outpost in the Revolutionary War.  Archaeological investigation excavated the site of the original fort's stockade. The exploration uncovered barracks buildings, a dining hall, officer’s quarters, a small blockhouse and sentry posts.

   In recent years the Museum has held American Revolution conferences at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and other venues which have attracted hundreds of people to hear talks from authors and other experts.  The museum has an online bookstore and has placed a dozen historic markers in the surrounding area which Bollen calls Mohawk Country.  

   Bollen said, “It’s all been a big success and given us a national outreach.  We are now working on an expansion of the museum.” 

   The museum has hired Saratoga Associates, a well-known regional planning firm, to put the expansion plan together.  Fund raising will then begin in earnest for probably an $8 million project. 

   The renovation will feature construction of walking trails and picnic grounds on the hilltop.  The project also will include expansion of the museum’s space and construction of the museum’s own conference center.

   Bollen said, “We see visitors from all over the country all the time.  We just want to see a lot more of them.”

It was 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13 1943 when a twin-engine American Army plane crashed in a rural section of Amsterdam’s South Side as the plane’s four-man crew parachuted to safety in the city’s Fifth Ward.  Remarkably, there were no injuries.  The plane was on a flight between Rome and Schenectady when its engines went out.

Fireman Frank Mazur, standing outside the Central Fire Station at West Main and Pearl Streets, heard an airplane engine sputtering and saw the tail light descending rapidly toward the South Side.  Firefighters, cops and ambulances scrambled to the scene.  The plane went down either in the vicinity of today’s Route 5-S or New York State Thruway.  The Army and State Police guarded the accident scene during the night, keeping crowds of spectators away.

Captain John F. Pope, the last to exit the plane at about 500 feet, was found wandering on DeWitt Street.  He apparently had landed on the roof of popular Fifth Ward Alderman Angelo Sardonia’s house or on the nearby porch of Charles Frohlich.  Accounts differ.  The other three crew members landed safely in the vicinity of the Fifth Ward School on Perkins Street. The plane’s exit door from which they escaped was found on Eagle Street in the city's East End.

Captain Pope of Montgomery, Alabama and Lieutenant Charles Thompson of Schenectady, another member of the crew, were decorated combat veterans from the North Africa campaign. Thompson had been in a plane shot down 45 miles behind the German lines, but Thompson and his men found their way back to allied territory.  The two other soldiers in the Amsterdam crash were Sergeant Joseph Bragdon of York Village, Maine and Sergeant Albert Finarelli of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The Recorder reported of Captain Pope, "He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal, with several oak leaf clusters, but it remained for Amsterdam to hold the distinction of being the first place over which he bailed out of a plane."

Captain Pope lost his beat-up old hat in the parachute jump into Amsterdam, a hat that had been with him in England, Ireland, Scotland, Gibraltar and all over North Africa in his 108 combat missions. Fortunately, Fifth Ward School second grader Peter Marcucio, celebrating his seventh birthday, and his friend Robert Selbert found the hat and were rewarded with junior sets of pilot's wings later that month.

In a letter to Marcucio, Captain Pope wrote, “As you know, the hat wasn't very good, but it carries a lot of memories with it that make it priceless to me.”

The flight had originated at the relatively new Rome Air Depot, created in November 1942.  The facility became Griffiss Air Force Base after the war in 1948. 

Amsterdam city historian Robert von Hasseln said the plane likely was on a check flight testing repairs to the aircraft or engines before returning it to an operational command. 

Von Hasseln said the type of plane that crashed is not certain, but probably it was a B-25 Mitchell, although it could have also been an A-20, B-26 or another type.  The Mitchell was named in honor of aviation pioneer Billy Mitchell.

The crew from the Amsterdam crash was lucky to survive.  Laura Hillenbrand in her book “Unbroken” wrote of World War II, “Some 15,000 airmen died in accidental crashes stateside.”
