Lecture one of a series on the 'Doctrine of Atonement', delivered by Dr. Mildred Bangs Wynkoop during the fall of 1979 at Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Dr. Wynkoop was a remarkable voice in the Church of the Nazarene—a writer, pastor, missionary, and theologian whose influence still resonates today. Her most celebrated works are Foundations of Wesleyan-Arminian Theology and A Theology of Love: The Dynamic of Wesleyanism, both of which continue to shape contemporary Wesleyan thought.

Her ministry journey spanned the globe and the academy. She pastored churches in California and Oregon, taught at George Fox Evangelical Seminary, and served as the founding president of Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary. She also taught in Taiwan before returning to the United States to serve as Professor of Theology at Trevecca Nazarene College (1966–1976) and later at Nazarene Theological Seminary (1976–1979).

Throughout her century-long life and ministry, Dr. Wynkoop met Phineas Bresee, studied under H. Orton Wiley and Olive Winchester, and left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues across four Nazarene institutions—having studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and Northwest Nazarene University, and having taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary.

"The opening day of the Tenth General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene, June 16, 1940, was a memorable one in the annals of the church. The blessing of God was unmistakably present from the opening song until the closing benediction. The morning communion service with Doctor Goodwin's message lifted us to heights of spiritual fellowship with God and with one another. Doctor Williams' characteristically stirring message in the afternoon was a challenge to better things for the days to come. The evening sermon was delivered by Dr. J. B. Chapman. His subject was "Christ and the Bible." It was an eloquent, scholarly and inspiring message that seemed to electrify the congregation of almost 6,000 listeners that crowded the great auditorium. Requests and pleas for the publication of the sermon were made both to the speaker and to the Publishing House executives. Therefore the message is now available, for the benefit of many who heard it and wish to read it as well as hear it, also for the many thousands who were not privileged to attend the service but who through reading this address will be led to a deeper love for the Bible and the Christ of the Bible."

In this episode, listen to a remastered version of William Greathouse's sermon “The Cross and Myself.” This is the final sermon of a series on the cross. This series was preached during Holy Week in 1976 at Shawnee Church of the Nazarene.

Greathouse was a pastor, teacher, and leader of the Church of the Nazarene. He served as a pastor from 1938 to 1963 and then was elected president of Trevecca Nazarene College. In 1968, he was elected to be president of Nazarene Theological Seminary, and in 1976, only a few months after this sermon series, the general assembly elected William Greathouse to be a general superintendent.
