In the New World, in Salem Village, four young girls came forward in February of 1692 and accused several women in the community of witchcraft. Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Hubbard, 12-year-old Ann Putnam Jr., 11-year-old Abigail Williams, and 9-year-old Betty Parris accused these so-called witches of having caused them physical and mental harm through “affliction.” These afflictions were described as fits beyond the power of epilepsy or any other naturally occurring disease. Over a year later, at the end of these trials, over 200 people were accused of witchcraft, 30 people were found guilty, and at least 25 people were killed by hanging, torture, or from being left to die in disease-ridden jails. Today, I’m going to tell you the story of the death of a mother and her infant, and the psychological torture of her daughter, the youngest witch accused in Salem.

In 1960, one woman named Lois, escaped from 30 year old David Carpenter after he lured her into the woods and began to attack her. She was lucky that a military patrol officer was nearby and caught him in the act. Carpenter was arrested and served a total of 14 years in prison. He was released in 1979 and that is where the bulk of our story will pick up today.

On April 13, 2020, the residents of Fair Oaks Avenue in Chicago gathered for their nightly 7 PM cheer, and the neighbors quickly noticed that two staples of the neighborhood were missing: husband and wife duo, Thomas Johnson and Leslie Ann Jones. Only a month into the pandemic lockdowns, the neighborhood looked forward to this nightly ritual and immediately took notice that some of their friends were missing. As far as they knew, the couple was active and healthy, and there was no reason they wouldn’t be in attendance. The couple’s next-door neighbor, Christy, took it upon herself to head over to their house and take a look around. She knocked, and got a bad feeling when no one answered or even looked out of the home.

Todd Geib was last seen at a party in Casnovia, Michigan on June 11, 2005. His body was found 21 days later on July 2nd, in a private lake nearby. His body was floating upright, and was described as having moderate decomposition. Police theorized that he strayed off from a party, and accidentally drowned in the nearby lake. They ruled it an undetermined or accidental drowning. His family, a group of investigators, and lots of outsiders find this hard to believe.

When the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette hired Mary Lee Orsini in 1967, I’m sure they never could have imagined the number of articles they would eventually produce about her, her husband, and her lawyers, some of which are still coming out in the 2020s. But it’s likely that no one who knew Mary Lee Orsini prior to 1981 could have guessed what she was capable of.
