Early on in the case, the West Memphis police had narrowed down their persons of interest, and abandoned any other options. In a small town like West Memphis, Arkansas (with a population of about 27,000 next to its neighboring city of Memphis, at 620,000), everybody seemed to know everybody. Investigators knew of a teenage boy that they had always been wary of and who they thought might do something awful one day - Damien Echols. So that’s where they set their sights.

On May 5th, 1993 at around 7:00 PM, John Mark Byers made a call to the West Memphis, Arkansas police to report his adoptive son, Christopher Byers, missing and let them know that his two best friends, Stevie Branch and Michael Moore, were with him. Stevie’s step-father, Terry Hobbs, had been calling for the boys to come home for about 30 minutes at that point, and no one had been able to find them. They were last seen by their neighbors riding bikes and playing together, heading toward a drainage canal called Robin Hood Hills.

On November 16th, 1957, Plainfield, Wisconsin’s Deputy Sheriff Frank Worden entered his family’s hardware store at 5:00 pm, expecting to see his mother, but instead he found an empty store. The cash register was open and the floor was covered in blood. He reached out to his fellow investigators to let them know of his mother’s disappearance, and he let them know that he had an idea of who might have her. He had found a sales slip on the counter for antifreeze, written to Ed Gein. Gein had been coming around to the store a lot recently, and the Worden family was already becoming weary of him. With the receipt as evidence, Gein was arrested at a nearby grocery store, and the Waushara County Sheriff’s Department made their way to the Gein farm to look for Bernice Worden.

Cyntoia Denise Brown had a complex childhood. She was adopted at a young age and struggled with her identity, her impulses, and later with abusive relationships and substance use. At 16, the same age her biological mother was when she got pregnant with her, Cyntoia found herself getting in a car with 43 year old, Johnnie Allen. They were headed to his home to have a sexual encounter at an agreed upon price of $150. In his bed, Cyntoia grabbed the gun from her purse and shot and killed Johnnie Allen. Terrence Shamel Woods Jr. was born on October 24, 1991 into a very close-knit family. For as long as his father could remember, Terrence Jr. wanted to be a film producer. He graduated from the University of Maryland and then went to London to receive a double master’s degree, and he remained there for the next 5 years. In October of 2018, Terrence got a job as a production assistant at a film shoot in Idaho. He told his father, Terrence Sr., that they had finished their work on October 5th, and by October 6th, the family had gotten a call they never expected.
