Gerard John Schaefer ended up on the police’s radar for the first time in 1972 - or at least for the first time as a suspect. Schaefer was a sheriff’s deputy in Martin County, Florida when he admitted to his superior that he had messed up… by tying two women to trees and torturing them, before they escaped. He was fired and charged with aggravated assault, but would spend the next 6 months living in the community, while awaiting his trial. What you’ll find here is that this is likely not where the story begins or ends.

In October of 1970, Dorothy Irene Wiley got into a violent argument with her husband, Clark, which ended in her walking out with their 13-year-old daughter, Susan, who goes by Genie, and taking her to her parents’ home in Monterey Park, California. Dorothy and Clark had an 18-year-old son (let’s call him Davis), but Davis had recently run away from home and was living with friends. Dorothy, who went by Irene, was a single mother for the first time, and in desperate need of support for herself and her daughter, and made her way to the disability services department in nearby Temple City, where she was hoping to be able to get disability payments for her severe nearsightedness. However, due to this vision problem, Irene accidentally made her way to the social services office next door, where a social worker took one look at Genie, and knew something was very wrong.

Jackie Johnson filed a missing persons report when her 17 year old son, Kendrick, hadn’t returned home by 11:30 on the night of January 10th, 2013. He sometimes would have things to do after school, but he would never be this late coming home. The police officers taking her report told her that he was probably just out with some girl. By the morning, her fears had only worsened, because he still hadn’t come home or called. Jackie went to the school as soon as she could to find out if Kendrick had come to school that morning or if anything had happened the day before. She never could have guessed what would be discovered at Lowndes High School later that day.

At 10:40 AM on December 31, 2000, a woman named Haruko walked into her daughter’s family home in the Kamisoshigaya neighborhood of Setagaya, in the suburbs of Tokyo. She had become worried about her family when she attempted to call her daughter and the call had not gone through. While it wasn’t necessarily alarming that the family may have missed one call, Haruko became more worried when they continued not to answer, especially since it was a holiday and she assumed the children would have woken their parents up by now. When she got to the home, there was no answer from the doorbell, so she used her spare key to make her way inside.

After years on trial and then in prison (specifically on death row for Damien), for the murders of three 8 year old boys, Jason, Jessie, and Damien had not given up. Not only were they still working to be free and clear their own names, but they were actively involved in trying to solve the case. In 2011, they’d have the opportunity to be free but not to officially clear their names.

After their arrests, Damien, Jason, and Jessie were prepared for trial. The county bought them suits, so they wouldn’t have to undergo trial in their prison jumpsuits. Damien and Jason would be tried together, but first Jessie would be tried on his own. Much like their questioning during the investigation, the trial would focus heavily on the idea that the three teens killed Stevie, Mike, and Chris as a part of a Satanic ritual.
