The Hunting Public

Both my Dad and I grew up and lived in Ohio for most of our lives where we learned to hunt whitetails and turkeys. We both always dreamed of one day hunting elk but we were uneducated on how to get a tag and wrote it off as something that was unrealistic for an eastern hunter. After realizing that there are many opportunities to hunt elk every season we have taken full advantage of what September has to offer. In this episode, we talk about our season and the things we have learned, what we plan to improve on next season, and at the end of the episode I tell the story of the bull that I shot with Ben and Colin this season!

Topics Include:

-the story of the bull Zach shot with Ben and Colin this season

-being aggressive when bulls are bugling

-how to time your elk hunting trip based off the rut

In this episode, Ben, Colin, and I talk about what we have learned when calling to elk. Like other forms of hunting we have found that calling to elk is very situational. We discuss the evolution of our calling strategy and some of the strategies that we have incorporated this season where we don't call at all. Hopefully some of the things we have learned will help you in a similar situation when moving in on a bugling bull!

Topics Include:

-situational calling decisions

-reading a bugle to tell if a bull is bedded or active

-reading thermals in the mountains

Over the years social media has certainly changed the way most people communicate and also can change the way people perceive certain things. As hunters and anglers it is important to us to use social media to share our way of life and the things we enjoy. But social media's power and ability to hide our way of life through censorship is a scary thing. In this episode, Brad Luttrell, CEO and Cofounder of GoWild, and I talk about the dangers of social media's censorship of hunting and what we can do to help keep our way of life for future generations.

Topics Include:

-how easy it is for social media to censor hunting

-is getting more people involved in hunting good for the sport?

-how to avoid social media censorship as a hunter

In this episode, Jake, Nick, and I talk about the timing and progression of making a stalk. Every situation is different, but in this podcast we cover several different strategies that we use to get within bow range of bedded bucks. Although stalking is an aggressive tactic there are certain times that we make the moves and there are other times we play it safe and wait for a better opportunity. Hopefully the strategies we use can help give you some confidence when making moves on a bedded buck this season!

Topics Include:

-what we think is the best situation to make a stalk

-looking for clues from other deer to relocate a buck

-stalking during the early season vs. during the rut

In the last episode, we talked about reading sign during the early part of the season and into the middle of October. In this episode, Aaron, Jake, Ted, Nick and I pick up where we left off and talk about what "hot sign" we are looking for during late October and during the rut. What sign we look for during this part of the season is a lot different than what we look for earlier when the bucks haven't laid down as much sign. We discuss different situations where sign led us to the action during the rut!

Topics Include:

-how our focus chances to scrapes in late October

-moving around to find the best action during the rut

-why we don't pay as much attention to rubs during the rut

Although we are always looking for "hot sign" throughout the season, what that sign looks like may vary greatly depending on where we find the sign and what time of the season it is. In this episode, Aaron, Jake, Ted, Nick, and I discuss different sign that we have found to find bucks early in the season. If you have ever asked yourself, "is this enough sign to setup on?" then hopefully this podcast helps you understand what sign is important to us in September and October.

Topics Include:

-how to tell how old sign is

-knowing when to setup based of of the sign you see

-how the sign we look for changes throughout the early season
