In this episode, Keith and I are talking about the importance of managing timber with our friends Larry, Ben, and Alex. We discuss why fire is an important tool in timber management, how to overcome hurdles that may prevent you from starting timber stand improvement projects, and creating goals for the land you are managing.  These guys have done an amazing job making improvements on Larry’s 80 acre property and as a result the hunting opportunities have increased greatly in just 5 years. From a hunting standpoint alone this property went from an average 80 acre parcel to the most attractive buck bedding location in the area!  If you or someone you know owns land and wants to reach the goals of better hunting, maximizing timber value, and creating diverse habitat for all local wildlife then this podcast may help get you started!

Topics Include:

-what a healthy forest looks like

-the difference between a small, managed, timber stand and huge public land timber stand that isn't managed

-creating better hunting opportunities by managing timber

In this episode, Aaron and I are talking with turkey experts Marcus Lashley and Will Gulsby about what we can do as hunters and conservationists to help improve turkey populations. In most regions of the country, turkey populations are on the decline. But thanks to experts that have dedicated their life to learning about what turkeys need to survive all hope is not lost especially if we work together with the common goal being more turkeys for us and future generations to enjoy!

Topics Include:

-balancing hunter satisfaction and giving turkeys enough time to breed

-what habitat types are we lacking across the country?

-what is brood rearing habitat and how to create and sustain it?

In this episode, I’ll be discussing hunting the northeast with Izaak Young of Vermont. Izaak spends as much time as he possibly can hunting on snow in multiple states, but he also isn’t afraid to get after it with a bow or on dry ground. What I enjoyed about talking with Izaak was his own unique way of taking advantage of a variety of situations when hunting deer in the northeast. If you hunt in low deer densities in the timber or you're trying to improve your skills hunting in the snow, Izaak will certainly teach you something!

Topics Include:

-what to do when you can't sort out a buck track in "the barnyard"

-swinging around a bumped buck to cut him off

-catching a buck coming back to the bed he just got bumped from

In the last episode, Ben and I discussed some of the changes to our strategy that we planned to make during our annual muzzleloader hunt. As we promised at the end of that episode, we recorded a follow up podcast talking about the results of the hunt. We were extremely pleased to see that our group worked great together and everyone was on the same page which resulted in a very successful trip! We talk about what worked well as well as some things we learned and can improve on next season.

Topics Include:

-the lessons we learned this season and what we want to change for next year

-how we stopped bucks from slipping out behind the drivers

-detailed stories of how we approached each successful hunt

This season is Ben and I's fourth season hunting the hills with a group doing deer drives. What we like the most about this style of hunting is the team aspect and how much we learn doing it. Every time we setup a drive we all experience a different part of the landscape and by sharing what we learn we speed up the learning process. Everything that we learn along the way also helps us for solo hunting throughout all stages of the season. So whether you hunt with a group or only enjoy hunting solo hopefully you can learn from our experiences!

Topics Include:

-lessons learned the hard way

-how the strategy has evolved based off of mistakes and success

-challenges of hunting with a big group

In this episode, I talk with Chris Jenkins about hunting the southern Appalachians. This area has low deer densities and rugged terrain that makes finding mature bucks a unique challenge. Chris has an extremely mobile style that helps him find what he calls “buck pockets” where he focuses his time. Chris spends a ton of time exploring the mountains and uses his woodsman ship to be successful. I really enjoyed talking with Chris and I hope you will learn as much from him as I have!

Topics Include:

-where big bucks hide in the southern Appalachians

-how scouting while bear hunting helps Chris find where mature bucks live

-unconventional hunting tactics

If you are like us, you often feel unable to relate to hunting shows telling you to hunt food sources in late season as you watch someone hunt over a standing crop field in frigid temperatures. Many hunters don’t hunt in an area that allows them to hunt near destination food sources like that or even in cold weather. So finding a good food source that deer pile into when it gets cold isn’t that easy. We have also found that targeting food sources during the late season isn’t the only way to hunt heavily pressured areas. In this podcast, Aaron and I talk about different situations that we have found mature bucks during late season and what we target to find them.  Hopefully you can relate to this conversation about late season hunting!

Topics Include:

-hunting mature bucks differently than other deer

-food sources other than crops that we look for during late season

-our favorite muzzleloader powder and bullets
