Erik "Slingin' Rik" Barber puts a lot of time into hunting public land whitetails throughout the fall. In the past, Erik has had the best success using run and gun style tactics where he aggressively hunts an area once and then moves on to a different area. This season he tried some different tactics, using cell cameras for the first time ever. In this episode we discuss the pro's and the cons of cell cameras, knowing your limits on how far you should be shooting at an animal, and situational calling tactics on pressured whitetails.

Topics Include:

-stories that make you realize how Erik got the nickname "slingin' Rik"

-the effects of cell cameras on hunting strategy

-why effective range can be different for everyone

As hunters we know the benefits of hunting and the important role it plays in conservation and wildlife management. Unfortunately, there will always be anti-hunting groups that are trying to discredit and ban hunting based off of emotions and not actual scientific evidence. That's why Aaron and I called Charles Whitwam from Howl For Wildlife to talk about what we can do to make our voices heard and stand up for our right to hunt!

Topics Include:

-how Howl For Wildlife has made it easy to take action with petitions & calls to decision-makers

-current threats to hunters across the country

-why it is important to make your voice heard

This season was our third annual “Muzz Camp” where long-time friends of THP make the trip to Ohio to hunt as a group during the muzzleloader season. The first two years we learned a lot about this style of hunting and were frustratingly close quite a few times. This season we finally found success and knocked down three bucks in the short four day season! In this episode, Ben, Colin, Shane, and I all discuss some of the things that we improved this season and what helped us get opportunities where they have slipped through the cracks in the past. This hunt is one we look forward to every year and we can’t wait to try again next year! If you want to try some fun tactics with your hunting buddies, you may be able to take away some things from our experiences hunting as a team!

Topics Include:

-what mistakes we made this trip and years past

-how Zach snuck into range of a bachelor group of bucks as a “driver”

-tips for hunting with a muzzleloader

In this episode, Zach talks with Mississippi hunter Land Smathers about some of the tactics that he has put into play this season. There is still some time to get out in hunt in a lot of southern states and you may even be lucky enough to catch some good rut action this time of the year. Along with stories from this season, Zach and Land talk about how to reduce the amount of noise you make in the woods, how to find bedding areas down south, how to age southern deer and much more! Whether you hunt down south or not, some of the topics discussed may help you out on future hunts!

Topics Include:

-staying quiet and packing light to stay undetected

-deer bedding in the south based off of conditions

-aging deer in the south

So in this episode, Zach has a conversation with the same  group of hunters from the northeast discussing different strategies that they use during the rut. After a series of unsuccessful hunts in Ohio, Zach decided to change things up and take a last minute trip to meet up with his buddies Jon Lewis, Jake Lynch, and Brett Joy in New York to try tracking in the snow. Along the way he also met Cori and Bailey Winch who are residents of New York and the entire group had a conversation discussing the situational tactics of tracking deer in big woods settings. Zach learned a lot on this hunt and a lot from these fellow hunters and hopefully you will too! One of the best ways to learn more about a buck is to follow his tracks to see what he does in a day!

-what conditions and situations are best for tracking
