On this, the 70th episode of The I in Us, Paul and Cody welcomed Hong Kong-based Chinese Doctor and intersex human rights activist Small Luk to the show. In addition to earning degrees in social work and traditional Chinese medicine, Small holds a Master’s in gender studies and nowadays runs a holistic treatment clinic in Hong Kong.
Small was the first intersex person to openly acknowledge her biological sex characteristics in Hong Kong, and in 2011, she founded the organisation: “Beyond Boundaries– Knowing and Concerns Intersex” to spread awareness about intersex people and promote the rights of intersex people, including ending forced genital surgeries. Small continues to work tirelessly to achieve human rights and positive health outcomes for her community, and it was a delight to discuss her life, challenges, and passions on this wonderful episode.

Associate Professor Bridget Haire is an empirical bioethicist. Bridget has over a decade’s
experience in conducting participatory research on sex, sexuality and gender issues
in collaboration with community partners.
Dr Kate Burry brings over a decade of experience in sexual, domestic and family
violence, human rights, and sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.
Also present is Professor Adam Bourne. Adam brings more than 15 years’ experience in health and
wellbeing research among marginalised populations with a particular focus on
LGBTIQ+ communities.
A hugely significant piece of work the Interconnect Project is striving to develop co-
designed, integrated, person-centred models of care to improve the physical and
mental health of people with innate variations of sex characteristics.

On this episode of The I in Us: Intersex Representation in Media(part 2), Paul and Cody flew solo again to continue the discussion they commenced on June 4 2025 about the representation of persons with innate
variations of sex characteristics in the media. They explored what they perceive as good
and bad representations, the importance of doing “inclusion” well, and the potential
impact of negative, poor or inaccurate representation on members of the intersex
community, in all forms of media.
Overall, they introduced some new examples into the mix. So, enjoy hearing Paul and Cody share more about this important and at times, challenging subject.

On this episode Cody and Paul welcome intersex actress, influencer, TikTok star, and advocate extraordinaire Juleigh A Mayfield to the JOY airwaves. Currently living in Florida USA, Juleigh, like so many, learned she has 47XXY sex chromosomes late in life, answering the many questions she had had about her body and life since her early years. Juleigh has said: “We all struggle through life. My story is no more important than yours. We all have depth, but if we don’t talk about our problems collectively then solutions can’t be found and shared“.
Nowadays Juleigh shares her story in a variety of ways including a podcast series, and her recently published memoir, penned over four years, “Genderless, Fearless and Fabulous – The Juleigh Mayfield Story (An Intersex Outlaw)”.
Enjoy hearing Juleigh discuss her early experiences, travels, journeys of self-discovery and of course, what drives her to do the things she does, in so many wonderful ways, today.

On this episode Paul and Cody welcomed USA-based Apollo Robert and Australian-
based Stephanie Lum to the show to discuss intersex youth engagement.
Apollo Robert is the Youth Program Manager at InterACT Advocates for Intersex
Youth. During his time so far with the organization, he focused on facilitating
InterSpace —InterACT’s online peer support/community group—and overseeing the
yearly development of youth-led advocacy projects.
Steph is an intersex advocate and poet living on Ngunnawal and Ngambri land (ACT,
Australia). She believes strongly in youth intersex voices and founded YOUth & I in
2019. This is an intersex youth anthology of creative artwork and writings, to help establish a platform for young creatives to share and be visible (youthandi.org). Further, her poetry has been published in various publications including the Australian Poetry Journal
and Not Very Quiet.
On this enthralling episode enjoy hearing Apollo and Steph share about the
importance of intersex youth engagement, including local and international
challenges, and successes.

July 31, 2025 The I in Us with Grant Martinson 26 June 2025
On this episode Paul and Cody welcome intersex ally Grant Martinson to the show. Heralding from the West Canadian province of Saskatchewan, Grant has been on a lifelong path of exploration—of body, energy, gender, and sexuality. During this journey Grant met someone who was intersex. Their conversations stirred something within him and while he’s never sought to find out if he too is intersex, the conversations did make him wonder, what if, through shame or fear or survival, he too was intersex but had held it all down?
Whether Grant is intersex or not, his story gives rise to questions we can all ask. Beyond the physical, in what other ways do our sex characteristic manifest in our life, and how do they shape our life path, sense of self and understanding of who we are, and why we exist.
Also, to commence the show, Executive Director of InterAction for Health Human Rights, Morgan Carpenter launched a new periodical segment of The I in Us – “In Intersex News” – when Morgan will offer updates on local and international events and achievements in intersex advocacy.

NAIDOC Week is an annual event when Australia’s First peoples and their allies celebrate the rich culture, strength, resilience, and contribution of Australia’s First Nations communities.
This week’s NAIDOC episode explores subjects and experiences such as invisibility and erasure, the impact of colonisation on First Nations languages, oral history and social structures, the importance of social, emotional and culturally safe spaces for First nations intersex people to disclose having an innate variation of sex characteristics, the importance of NAIDOC week, and also, Peter’s art and the role art has played in Peter’s journey as an Aboriginal gay man.

On this week’s episode of The I in Us Paul and Cody welcome Michigan (USA) based dancer, choreographer, and intersex advocate, Kassie Logan Keil to the JOY airwaves. Kassie received their Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and choreography from Ohio University in 2020. They are currently in their fifth season dancing professionally and instructing for Fun Girl Dance Company and School. Also they are a remarkable and inspiring member of the global intersex community. Further, in 2024, Kassie was a member of InterACT’s youth advocacy cohort, where they choreographed and directed their first dance film “Strange Girls.” Kassie believes creativity and movement empowers one’s sense of agency and bodily autonomy. That is central in their choreography and instruction.
