The Ian Furness Show

A new bill in California will allow student athletes to be paid for their name and likeness, but how many will truly benefit from this? Football, and to a lesser extent, men's basketball are the revenue drivers that allow other scholarship sports to exist. Even among those sports though, how many players will have enough value to generate revenue? Let's not forget the opportunities that all intercollegiate sports provide beyond the very few who may profit from this. Last weekend, Mike Leach called his players "fat, dumb, happy, and entitled." How big of an impact will that have on the morale of the team? Is it the right way to motivate players? Alex Brink and Jed Collins discuss this, plus a look ahead as the Cougs get a badly-needed bye week.

We're obviously heading in the direction of finding ways to compensate college players, but there is still to be worked out. What happens if a player endorses a high-end car, and rather than cash, they get to drive a car for a year? They have to pay taxes on the use of that car. It's far more complicated than some are making it, and will only benefit a small few. Nigel Burton joins the show to talk all things Pac-12 football. It's a huge spread, but Kevin still feels confident that New England will destroy the Redskins: Patriots -15.5 is the Fact or Fiction pick. The NL wild card play-in game is tonight. Maybe someday we'll get another opportunity to experience that in Seattle... someday.

It wasn't a huge surprise, but after an embarrassing game against the Saints last weekend, the Hawks came back against Arizona, winning convincingly. One of the things that makes this team great is that they do their own thing. Expecting something different against the air raid? The Hawks are going to put out their best linebackers. Is it time to sit Carson? Nope! Carroll gives him a chance to redeem himself. Speaking of Carson, Ian caught up with him after the game to discuss the outstanding performance, and what it meant to have the confidence of the coach, and the team going into the game. Ian talks x's and o's with Hugh Millen on Hardcore Football, looking at Carson's game, the change in the use of the zone read, and the impact Paul Allen had on the franchise. Who looked good this weekend? Jadeveon Clowney getting the pick 6 yesterday, meaning Dave Richards from Covington wins $100 from Cutter and Buck.

With a short week at the VMAC, schedules have been completely re-arranged, thus Pete Carroll's Monday press conference has been moved up to 2pm from it's normal time of 3pm. Naturally, Carroll has already moved on from the win and is looking ahead to the Rams on Thursday. The Athletic's Mike Sando takes a look at this weekend in the NFL. What's wrong with the Rams? On Fact or Fction, UCLA is only giving 5.5 against the Beavers? Ian says take the Bruins all the way. Fat, dumb, happy, and entitled; that's what Mike Leach said about his own players after the Utah game on Saturday, and Ian agrees.

Each Monday all NFL season, The Athletic's Mike Sando takes a look at all of the biggest storylines from around the league. Mike Sando brought to you by Cascade Ice.
