September is a mini January. We start college, university, new jobs, new programs – just lot’s of new things! Even if they aren’t necessarily new, most organizations understand September to be a new and fresh time to unveil opportunities, etc. What’s so crucial as we begin things anew, is doing things productively. And not just productively, but productive in a Christian perspective. To help us see this and apply this we have popular blogger and author Tim Challies joining us this week. A few years ago now he wrote a book called Do More Better: A Practical Guide to Productivity. Even though it sounds like it could be a secular self-help book, Tim grounds productivity in biblical truth. You’ll benefit practically by listening to this conversation.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Tim Challies is a follower of Jesus Christ, a husband to Aileen and a father to three children. In addition to blogging (challies.com), Tim worships and serves as a pastor at Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto, Ontario, and is a co-founder of Cruciform Press. He’s also a published author and regularly speaks at conferences.

With me today is blogger, author, and speaker Tim Challies. If you’ve listened to indoubt for some time now, you probably know that we’ve actually already had a conversation together with Tim. It was on a Christian perspective on alcohol.
Anyways, it’s great to have you back here with us, Tim.

    Sure, thanks for having me.

Now I say that you’re most popularly known as a blogger because that’s really how you came to be known in the Christian world. For those unfamiliar though, do you mind sharing us the quick, couple sentence … how that actually came to be?

Yeah. I just started a website for my family — hence the challies.com name of the website. It was really just meant for my parents, my sisters; to share pictures of my kids, that kind of thing.
Started doing a bit of writing and sharing it for them, and other people started reading it. It just kind of grew from there. I’ve been doing it now for 15 years or something, so it’s kind of grown into its own thing.

Yeah, that’s awesome. In addition to that, why don’t you first let us know a bit about who you are. For those who are unfamiliar, it’s kind of neat to know that you are … you live in Canada, which is exciting. So anyways, for those who are unfamiliar,

  • Episode 087: Church is Uncomfortable (and Essential)
Church is uncomfortable. Especially having been seasoned since birth in our consumeristic culture, church community can feel extremely weird and odd. Why? Because to do church well means to look not at yourself, but to look at God and others. In fact, embracing the “uncomfortability” of church can really help you love God and others more. But the reality is, many of us struggle with church community. Brett McCracken, an author and journalist, has just written a book that tackles this issue called Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community. He joins us on indoubt this week to talk about church and how we can better place ourselves in this wonderfully uncomfortable body of people.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Brett McCracken is a senior editor at The Gospel Coalition and author of Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community, Gray Matters: Navigating the Space Between Legalism and Liberty, and Hipster Christianity: When Church and Cool Collide. Brett and his wife, Kira, live in Santa Ana, California. They belong to Southlands Church, where Brett serves as an elder. You can follow him on Twitter.

With me today is author and journalist Brett McCracken. Brett is the author of three books that I can see, and the latest one is coming right off the press. Crossway Books has published his book that he’s called Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community.
Anyways, it’s great to have you on the show today, Brett.

Thanks so much, Isaac. It’s great to be here.

The first question that I’m going to ask you is just simply, who are you? There’s probably a lot of people that don’t know the name Brett McCracken, especially up here in Canada.
So, tell us a little bit about who you are, maybe how you met Jesus, what your normal day looks like.

Yeah, for sure. So, I grew up in the Midwest of the US, so Oklahoma, Kansas, kind of born and raised in the church, so I’ve been a Christian pretty much as long as I can remember. I think I was, you know, about five when I made the decision officially to follow Jesus. Yeah.
So, you know, I grew up in a great family, a great Christian family. My dad was super involved in our church, and all of my grandparents and relatives, so looking back I just feel so fortunate for that. And I think it’s such a grace of God that sometimes just the circumstances of where you’re born and the people that God gives you in your family and in your life.
I went to Wheaton College which is a Christian university in the Chicago area, and you know, the way that I tell my story of kind of how I got to where I am today is: faith has always been a big part of my life. And so has, like, culture and the arts and movies and yet growing up in kind of a conservative Baptist upbringing, I often felt those two worlds kind of opposing each other, or far from one another.

With me again this week is Christian counselor and author, Brad Hambrick. Once again, if you’re listening and you didn’t hear last week’s episode, Brad serves as the Pastor of Counseling at the Summit Church in North Carolina. He’s the instructor of Biblical counseling at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and he’s also a counsel member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. Thank for being here again with us Brad.

    My pleasure.

For those who didn’t listen last week, Brad, can you just give us a basic rundown of who you are and sort of what you do?

Yeah, I am a husband and father. I’ve been married for close to 20 years. I have two children who are 10 and 13 so we’re in a fun season of life there. My ministry responsibilities vary between serving as a Pastor of Counseling, which is, at a church of our size, predominately serving as a consultant for our staff and overseeing counseling ministries of our church. Then also as an instructor at Southeastern Seminary, helping people who are wanting to go into counseling related ministries get trained for that.

Cool. That’s awesome. I just was reminded in my time at Bible College, I had one Pastoral Counseling class and our text book was called the BYB, The Big Yellow Book, which was Gary Collins. I don’t know if that’s a resource that you use or not.

It has been updated several times, so the Big Yellow Book is now The Bigger Yellow Book. In terms of overviewing and assortment of mental health concerns and giving some initial best practices, it is. It’s a quality resource.

That’s cool. Anyways, can you briefly give us the definition of mental illness? You’ve sort of worked through that definition. For those who didn’t listen last week, might be helpful for them to hear where you’re co...

In the last couple decades or so, the topic of mental health has become increasingly popular with more and more people talking about it. You can’t really go far without either experiencing a form of mental illness or knowing someone with mental illness. But what exactly is mental illness? Why is it difficult to talk about? We talk with Christian counselor Brad Hambrick this week to address these important questions. In addition, he also talks about how we, as Christians, ought to consider medication as a solution to mental health. So, whether or not you personally struggle with mental illness, the wisdom and knowledge Brad gives during this conversation will help you.

Thanks for being here today, Brad.

It’s great to be with you. Thank you for the invitation.

You know, as we do with every single one of our guests, it just really helps kinda paint a picture of the voice. If you want to, it would be great to hear how you met Jesus, and also, what your day-to-day life looks like right now.

I came to faith at a small country church in the rural Midwest, Kentucky. I grew up on a corn and soybean row cropping farm, and came to faith under the faithful preaching and teaching in about a 150-200 member church, was nurtured in my faith by the same Sunday school teacher from the age of third grade through eleventh grade, as there were five or six of us. That was the totality of the youth group at our church, who were invited into the home, and played with, and taught the Scriptures there, in that area.
At this juncture in my life, I have two boys of my own, who are ten and thirteen. My wife Sally and I are having a blast, and this is that season of life when school, and different sports leagues, and hobbies, and the kids still want to play and have you be a part of most things that they’re a part of. And so that fills most of our days, and it really is a joy.

That’s awesome. Do you have any enjoyable hobbies that you do?

Well, right now, I’m coaching my boys’ sports teams, which happens to be baseball for each of them. A couple years ago, my youngest informed me that it was his goal that we run a marathon together before he graduates high school. And so, while I don’t enjoy running,

Are you living in a ‘stupid normal’? Here’s the long and the short of it: we, as human beings, are created for God. Because of this, we long for significance and joy. However, today’s culture has removed “God” from their thinking, resulting in a ‘stupid normal’ lifestyle that doesn’t acknowledge God at all. The irony is, we’re only going to find our significance and joy when we find it in God through Christ. Jonathan Parnell, author of Never Settle for Normal: the Proven Path to Significance and Happiness, joins us this week to help us get from ‘stupid normal’ to living in the satisfied life of the Gospel.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Jonathan Parnell is the lead pastor of Cities Church in Minneapolis–St. Paul, where he lives with his wife, Melissa, and their seven children. He is the author of Never Settle for Normal: The Proven Path to Significance and Happiness.

With me today is Jonathan Parnell. Jonathan is a pastor and an author, and he’s been closely affiliated with the ministry of desiringGod, which many of you have heard of. Thanks for being here today Jonathan.

Hey Isaac. Good to be here. Thanks.

What we love to do, and many interviews start like this because I think it’s just good so people get to know who you are – how did you meet Jesus?

Yeah. Great question. I was blessed to grow up in a family who just believes the gospel, a family that is very involved in the local church. So I grew up, that was just a part of life. Heard the gospel at an early age. At the early age of about eight years old, I believed, and then was baptized. Then went through high school and kind of the ups and downs of trying to learn how to take my faith seriously. Then I was 17, 18, is when I got into a car accident. God used that to really wake me up, get my attention. That really just changed my life, so I began to read the Bible and pursue God.

That’s where I really began to experience the transforming power of the gospel.

I was about 18 when God began to do that. From there, I sensed a calling to vocational ministry. Ended up moving to Minnesota, and yeah here we are 10 years later.

Now, is vocational ministry run in your family, or were you sort of the pioneer of that?

Yeah, you know, it doesn’t. There’s definitely a Christian heritage that runs in my family on both sides, my mom and my dad’s, and I grew up close to both sides of my family, but I’m one of the first to really sense a calling to vocational ministry.

What does your life look like day-to-day? I saw on your little mini bio on desiringGod that you have seven children, and that’s a lot of children. You’re a pastor, and you’re an author, so yeah what does your life look like right now?

Yeah. I’m glad you asked that because I should say for context,
