NIV, KJV, NKJV, ESV, NLT, CSB, RSV, NASB, and the list goes on and on. There are multiple Bible translations of the inerrant Word of God. That might raise some questions regarding their accuracy. With us to help walk us through the story of Bible translations and answer some serious questions is Mark Ward, the author of the new book called Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible. This is a fascinating conversation and one you don’t want to miss if you’re at all interested in (or questioning) the Bible.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Mark Ward received his PhD in New Testament Interpretation from Bob Jones University in 2012. He now serves the church as a Logos Pro, writing weekly on Bible study for the Logos Talk Blog and training users in the use of Logos Bible Software. He blogs at byfaithweunderstand.com.

With me today is Mark Ward. Mark received his PhD from Bob Jones University in 2012 and he now serves the church as a Logos pro. Thanks for being in studio again, Mark.

It’s really great to be here, Isaac. Thank you.

Yeah, last year, actually it was around this time, we had Mark with us to talk about a book that he had co-written with a fellow named Tom Breeden, and it was titled Can I Smoke Pot? Marijuana In Light of Scripture. They were just great episodes. It seems kind of funny that here you are, an expert in Bible translations and marijuana. You think about these things, right?

Some people use Bible translations and use the paper to roll up the marijuana.

Oh, I see how this works.

    That’s the connection.

Okay, that’s good! Anyways, they were episodes 43 and 44 if you’re interested. Very interesting and good episodes, so I’d encourage you to listen to that.

Anyways, Mark, how are you doing?

I’m doing great. I am rejoicing in God’s goodness to me.

That’s so good. If you don’t know, if you never knew actually, we are just above the line in Canada, in Vancouver, and Mark is just below the line in a little place called Bellingham, which is like, two hours out of Seattle probably.

About an hour and a half.

An hour and a half, there you go. He works at Logos Bible Software, Faithlife. You’re called a Logos pro, so what exactly is that?

Well the people who teach us the Bible in churches need to use tools to do their study. One of the premier tools available is Logos Bible Software.

  • Episode 098: Still a Christian (despite the arguments)
When it comes to science, philosophy, and reason, does it make sense to believe in Christianity? Well, yes. Justin Brierley joins us on the show this week to talk about his new book Unbelievable? Why After Ten Years of Talking With Atheists I’m Still a Christian.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Justin Brierley presents Faith Explored in the UK which includes the debate programme Unbelievable? The show is also a popular podcast and has produced an annual evangelism and apologetics conference. He is also the Senior Editor of Premier Christianity Magazine. Justin has a wonderful wife called Lucy and four amazing children too. When he’s not working Justin is usually either spending time with his family or helping out at the church.

With me today is Justin Brierley. Justin is most popularly known as being the host of Unbelievable? – a Christian apologetics radio and podcast show based in England that’s been on for quite some time now. So it’s a great show – we’ll get into more of that in just a moment. Justin was also on indoubt last year around this time, so it’s great to have you back on this show again Justin.

Great to be here Isaac, thanks for having me.

Yeah for sure. For those that are a little bit unfamiliar with who you are, not the show but just you, what are a few things you can tell us about who Justin is?

I am a Christian, that’s a good starting point, and I’ve been working for Premier, which is a christian media organization here in the UK for 15 years now believe it or not. And my role now has grown to the point where I actually do have a number of different hats here and those include obviously the Unbelievable? radio show and podcast and its associated conference and now the book. I also actually spend my time editing a monthly magazine called Premier Christianity Magazine, which is kind of the equivalent in the USA I suppose of Christianity Today, plus doing some other bits and pieces for our radio and video site. I’m married to a church minister and we have four children together and I’m very much involved in my local church as well in terms of the worship and that kind of thing so yeah it’s a busy life really.

That’s so cool. Do you mind briefly kind of sharing with us what exactly Unbelievable? the show is for people that maybe haven’t heard it?

Well the Unbelievable? show has been in existence for, well it will be nearly 12 years now. It’s 12 years towards the end of this year. On podcast you can go back just about 10 years now in the podcast archive and so a lot of people have been listening right from the start but we’re constantly picking up new listeners both on the radio station and as a podcast and really

the show has always existed to bring together Christians and Non-Christians for dialogue and debate.

To help Christians think through their faith, understand the objections of others how they might want to think abo...

With me today is Cody Curtis, he’s the composer and director of Psallos. It’s good to have you on the show again Cody.

    Thanks for having me.

Yeah, if you’re listening, Cody and I actually already had a conversation on worship music back in January of this year. It was episode 52, and if you enjoy this conversation, you should definitely go and check out that last conversation as well.
But for those Cody, who didn’t hear episode 52, and just to give all of us a refresher, tell us a bit about who you are, and sort of what you do on a more personal level.

I’m from Memphis, Tennessee, it’s where I was born and raised. And my wife and I, and our daughter Ellowyne, we currently live in Jackson, Tennessee. We work at a place called Union University in Jackson, and we’ve been here for about six years, and we’ve both did our undergraduate degrees at Union. It’s a fantastic school. If anybody’s listening and is looking for a great undergraduate education, definitely check out Union.
And so we did that, graduated from there in 2009, got my master’s in Music Composition at UNCG, it’s a school in North Carolina. And wrapped up my doctorate two Mays ago in, I guess it was 2016, in Music Composition at the University of Memphis.
So, composition, music composition, is what I love to do, what I love to study and learn more about. And so my wife and I, we’ve been married since 2009, and we have one daughter right now, her name is Ellowyne, and she’s just a blast to be around,

Cool. That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing that little bit. So Psallos, this is a big part of your life right now. Why don’t you, if someone’s completely unfamiliar with Psallos, and by the way, when I’m saying Psallos, to the listeners, it’s P S A L L O S. So maybe first, tell us what that name is, and then kind of get into what Psallos is, and then what the mission and vision of Psallos is.

Psallos is a … or Psallo is Greek word, it’s used five times in the New Testament, and it’s usually translated to singing or to make melody. The main place it occurs in our mind, whenever we picked it as our name, was in Ephesians 5 when Paul says, “Singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, and making melody to the Lord,” and that’s the word there for making melody to the Lord.
And we picked that, we added the S to it, to make it sound even better we thought. Because we thought it encapsulated what our mission was, and that was to help people to make melody to each other, and to the Lord, but as a form of worshiping through music.
And our music, it’s not congregational all the time, sometimes our music is congregational, but it’s more on the artistic presentation realm of things. And, so I guess I would summarize our mission as to create worshipful art music. We really,

  • Episode 096: God Knows All Things (Jen Wilkin)
God knows all things. The fancy word for this is “omniscience.” It’s one of God’s incommunicable attributes, and it’s the attribute of God we discuss in more depth during this conversation. Author and speaker Jen Wilkin joins us to talk about her book None Like Him, specifically looking at God’s all-knowingness.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Jen Wilkin is a speaker, writer, and teacher of women’s Bible studies. During her seventeen years of teaching, she has organized and led studies for women in home, church, and parachurch contexts. Jen and her family are members of the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas.

With me today is author and speaker, Jen Wilkin. Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me today, Jen.

Oh, it’s my pleasure. Thanks for having me on.

First thing is, who are you? How did you meet Jesus? What does your day-to-day life look like right now?

I’m a wife and a mom. I have four kids, three who are in college and one who is a senior in high school. So I’m almost an empty nester. I have been a believer since I was a child. I’m a terrible Southern Baptist because I can’t point to a specific date when I was saved, but they have allowed me to stay anyway.
I am an author and a Bible teacher. I write Bible studies that are used predominantly by women. Historically I have written them for a community Bible study that I led in the community, and now I am on staff at my church. And so we are resourcing the people in the local church.

Very very cool. So is that like your day-to-day job? Like, today you’ll be working on that kind of endeavour?

Yes, I’m actually editing a curriculum on the second half of Matthew as soon as I get off of our interview.

Oh man, that’s awesome. All right, so let’s just jump in here. Last year you wrote None Like Him, which really did seem to be kind of highly appreciated across the board which is great. In a simple and straightforward way, what is this book about? And also, why did you write it?

It’s a book about the incommunicable attributes of God, the things that are true of God that are only true of Him and cannot be true of humans. So we know that we’re created in the image of God, and there’s a lot of discussion about what it means to be an image bearer, but much of what it means is that there are things that are true about God which can be reflected in us, things like that

He is gracious and that He is long suffering and that He is merciful.
But this book is actually taking a look at the attributes that are only true of Him, that He is infinite, that He is self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, et cetera.

So it’s focusing on that first half. You will not be surprised to learn that I actually just submitted a manuscript for the communicable attributes to do as a followup.
But I felt like it was important to start with the incommunicable ones because I think they’re the ones that we, most of us, have the least developed vocabulary around, have spent probably the least amount of time meditating on. And so I wanted to draw our attention to those first and foremost because

they are what render up for us a transcendent vision o...

“I would challenge you on your lukewarmness.” What can we learn from a 17-year-old martyr from 500 years ago? Actually, a lot. In our second week of looking at powerful young adults in history (listen to our first one here on Charles Spurgeon), we take a moment to consider the bold, courageous, and devoted life of Jane Grey. We’re very thankful and grateful to have popular church historian Dr. Michael Haykin back on the show again to chat with us about her life.

    Who’s Our Guest?
Dr. Michael Haykin (ThD University of Toronto) is professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Haykin also serves as the director of The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies. With me today is Dr. Michael Haykin. Michael is Professor of church history and biblical spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, as well as the Director of The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies. Michael has also written many, many books. Anyways, great to have you back on the show again Michael.

Yeah. It’s good to be with you Isaac, thank you.

Earlier this year Michael was gracious enough to take us through the main events of church history. We sort of split it up into four different conversations. So, if you’re interested in church history from pretty much the end of Acts all the way up to today, I’d encourage you to go back and listen to those.
Anyways, it was our third conversation when you were talking about the Reformation, Michael, that you mentioned in passing Jane Grey. You just said her name and a list of others where you said, “Here’s a martyr, Jane Grey.” And after the conversation I actually looked her up online and I listened to one of your presentations on her life.
I was just fascinated with this young girl’s life, and her boldness, and her courage, her faith. And it is Jane Grey that we’re going to be looking at today.
But, just so listeners can know, you live in Canada.

I do, yes. I commute to the states, that’s a bit of a long story. But, yeah. I come down here on two week stints.

That’s good. It’s always good to have another Christian leader from Canada on the show! So, that’s really exciting. So, anyways. I sort of already talked to our listeners about Jane Grey. But, Michael, why don’t you just give us the basic overview of Jane Grey.
    Who is Jane Grey?

Yeah, Jane Grey was born in 1537. She would die, as you’ve already mentioned as a martyr in 1553. There is some discussion in recent days that her birthdate might be 1536. Be that as it may, she’s about 17 or 18 when she dies as a martyr.

And it’s for good reasons that people are hearing about him, for his life of faith is extremely encouraging. That’s why we’re specifically looking at Spurgeon’s life this week – and even his young adulthood. We want to know what he did and thought. We also want to hear what he’d say to us if he were to peer into our culture today. We’re graciously joined by Dr. Christian George to help us with this.

With me today is Dr. Christian George. Christian is an author and a professor. He actually serves as assistant professor of historical theology, and he’s curator of the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Thanks so much for being here today, Christian.

    Thanks, Isaac.

Before we kind of look into the life of Charles Spurgeon, why don’t you first just tell us a bit about who you are. Just a little bit personal, maybe something interesting about you. Then also, what you do day by day.

Absolutely. I’m 35 years old. I was born in 1981 in Louisville, Kentucky. My dad was a professor at Southern Seminary, way back in the day. I grew up in a Christian home, Christian family. When I was eight years old, Isaac, I really felt God pulling me to Himself. I still remember what that feels like, just this burning and yearning for Christ.
Over the course of high school and college I just fell in love with the Saviour in a million ways. I went to Stanford University. I was an art major there, so drawing portraits all day. Then God pulled me into the ministry, just full force. I started preaching, and eventually that led into a passion for Charles Spurgeon, this great prince of preachers as they call him.
I did my MDiv at Beeson Divinity School, and then I went over to Scotland. My wife and I basically sold everything we’ve ever owned. We sold our car and we went to north Scotland for three very cold but blessed years. Then after that I was hired at OBU, Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Then three years later I was asked to come curate the Spurgeon library in Kansas City where I’m currently going on my fourth year.

That’s awesome. That’s so good. You say that you started to get interested in who Spurgeon was. Was there something, an event or something you read, that really just captured your mind at first when it came to Spurgeon?

Well, you know, he has this little devotional called “Morning and Evening”. It’s just a very simple devotional,
