  • Diverse Storytelling Grants with The Channel
The Channel is a giving circle focused on advancing LGBTQIA+ causes through grant rounds. The grants give LGBTQIA+ community projects a chance to use their voice and tell their stories. Tonight we speak to The Channel’s Executive Director, Georgia Matthews about their first ever small grants round, Diverse Storytelling, which will offer four grants of $2,500 to standout projects that best support the LGBTQIA+ community.
The winning applicants will be awarded for projects that are community-led and focused on marginalised groups and the issues that they face.

  • HIV on the rise for Indigenous Australians, is it time to change the narrative?
New data has urged that it is time for immediate action to combat HIV amongst indigenous Australians with the news that newly diagnosed HIV rates among Australian-born non-Indigenous people decreased by 22 per cent, from 3.7 per 100,000 population to 2.9 per 100,000 people between 2012 & 2016, but there is a 33 per cent increase in new cases of HIV diagnosed in Indigenous people, from 4.8 per 100,000 people in 2012 to 6.4 in 2016.
An article in the Medical Journal of Australia released this week shows that the rate of HIV diagnosis among Indigenous Australians is more than double the rate for non-Indigenous people for the first time since full data was collected in 1992.
If we want to get HIV rates down, we need a approach to treatment and prevention that targets ever Australian.
Dean Arcuri speaks to one of the authors of the article James Ward, who is the head of infectious disease research at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

  • What is it like being an Asian man in the Bear Community
A fortnight ago we covered the crowing of Mr Australasia Bear 2018, Dale from Harbour City Bears, and with it saw the end of the previous titleholder’s reign.
Morro Qiu from New Zealand stepped down as a title holder. Originally born in China before emigrating to New Zealand, Morro represented a diverse image of what it means to be a bear and shared a narrative that we don’t always see, and don’t always allow enough room for a voice in our communities.
Once he had finished his title year, Morro sat down with The Informers Tom Morgan and had a chat about the privileges and perils of being in the spotlight and spreading some panda love on what it means to be an Asian man in our bear community.
This segment of The Informer aired on JOY 94.9 on 3rd July and was hosted by Dean Arcuri.

  • Alison Xamon calls for WA’s last piece of legislation that allows for LGBTI discrimination to be scrapped

Western Australia’s Attorney General John Quigley has said that he is unable to say if the McGowan government will support proposed changes to the state’s Equal Opportunity Act, because the results of the federal government’s review into religious freedom in Australia has not yet been released.
This came after Greens MP Alison Xamon put forward a bill yesterday to amend the Equal Opportunity Act to remove loopholes which allow religious based organisations to terminate the employment of staff because of their sexuality.
With bills being released in WA expunging historic homosexual convictions and an apology by the premier earlier this year, it’s got us wondering, why the hold up on the last piece of legislation in Western Australia Statutes that still allows for discrimination against members of the LGBTIQ community.

And we speak to Morro Qiu from New Zealand Mr Australasia Bear 2017, who represents a diverse image of what it means to be a bear, as he shares a narrative that we don’t always see, and don’t always allow enough room for a voice in our communities.

  • Exclusive Interview : Melbourne Man who contracted HIV while on PrEP shares his story
On the 22nd of May in 2017, Fairfax media broke the news that a Melbourne man had tested positive for HIV while he was on the PrEPX trial.
The minute that news hit the headlines, a member of our community had their voice taken away from them. With assumptions being drawn in the media and on social media about their sexual practices and character, and what this meant for PrEP users around the country.
We now have PrEP on the PBS and our narrative surrounding the HIV prevention drug and the people who use it have changed.
He was the fourth man worldwide to have contracted HIV while on PrEP and 1 year since the news broke, he approached Dean Arcuri, wanting to share his story and to talk about what this was like for him on JOY 94.9.
He was the subject of conversation but was able to tell his side of the story, as he saw assumptions and misinformation spread about his PrEP use, his character and his lived experience.
He still doesn’t have answers to why he contracted HIV but that doesn’t stop him from stepping forward and sharing his story, in spite of assumptions made about his character and his health when the news broke.
Now in this exclusive interview you’ll hear his side of the story.
