  • 5 years of Pride with Yarra Valley Pride Cup
Since its inception in 2014, The Pride Cup, founded by Jason Ball, helped to create a more accepting space for LGBTIQ people in football. Inspiring the now annual AFL Pride Game between St Kilda and Sydney, as well as rainbow-themed fixtures all over the country, including eight Pride Cups in Victoria from Hamilton to Gippsland this year, it has helped to create greater visibility and acceptance, for LGBTI young people regionally.
On the Weekend the Yarra Valley Pride Cup celebrated its 5th year and The Informer was on hand to see the games and the celebration, seeing first hand the transformative affect the Pride Cup has on communities.
Here are some of our highlights from the day with Jason Ball and Victoria’s Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Ro Allen at the welcome lunch, Bodie cheering from the sidelines and Netball Captain Chelsea Bershaw as Dean arcuri heads to the Yarra Glen Pride Cup.
Congratulations to Yarra Glen Football Club for winning the cup again 5 years in a ro, and to Glen Daniel Hurley for winning the Pride Medal as well as Olivia Angh who won the Pride Medal in the Womens Football which was won by the St Kilda Sharks and in the Netball, Yarra Glen won again with Meghan Cowen receiving the pride medal.

  • INTERSECTIONALITY LGBTIQA/CALD/DISABILITIES with Margherita Coppilino
Things are hard enough for individuals who live their lives managing a cross section of marginalization, but there are many within our communities that do. When it comes to research, data and findings, we can sometimes focus on the one instead of the many.
And we can seem behind in meeting the needs of LGBTIQ people who live and manage a cross section or marginalization; whether that be linguistic, physical or cultural.
Now on JOY, Dean Arcuri speaks to Margherita Coppilino, who spoke about this intersection at the Health in Difference conference earlier this month and is helping to raise awareness not only within our communities, but our health service providers as well.

  • Support the Intersex Community with the Darlington Statement
In the Australian, Adam Creighton checked Labors 211 page statement of Labors beliefs, values and program for government and found 63 mentions of the I in LGBTI, which stands for Intersex.
Andre Bolt asked blog post ‘New Labor : Sex Crazed’, ‘Why is the oldest political party in Australia so obsessed with marginalised elitist rubbish? Highlighting with intersex being mentioned 63 times, that “wealth” is mentioned 61 times and “inequality” is mentioned 47.
Siting that, and I quote, ‘Whatever intersex means — or is — it’s also far more important than “ownership” which gets 12 mentions, “production” which gets 18 and “distribution” which gets 10.
Well Adam Creighton and Andrew Bolt, if you didn’t know, Intersex
Is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the typical definitions of male and female.
They can be born with several variations in sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, or genitals, and as such, means things aren’t so cut and dry when giving the intersex community the support it needs, but don’t worry, because the Australian and New Zealand intersex community are making it easier for you to understand and satnd with them, thanks to the Darlington Statement.
Which sets out the priorities and calls by the intersex human rights movement in Australia and Dean Arcuri speaks to Tony Briffa from Intersex Human Rights Australia about how we as allies, can affirm and stand behind the statement, and our intersex community.

  • Equality on the field comes in all shapes & sizes with Emily Rowe -Yarra Valley Pride Cup
Starting in Yarra Glen in 2014, the Yarra Glen Pride Cup celebrated diversity and inclusion in sport for the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and intersex communities by tackling homophobia in football.
The local team of proud gay footballer Jason Ball, the Yarra Valley Pride Cup started on a grassroots level with a rainbow colors painted on the 50-meter line, and diversity and inclusion training for the teams, staff and clubs, this show of support has not only elevated the conversations about LGBTI inclusion in Aussie Rules but been the influence for the Pride Matches on a professional level.
It was announced at player selection yesterday that footballer and transgender woman Emily Rowe will be playing for the St Kilda Sharks in an exhibition match against the Eastern Devils at Saturdays Yarra Valley Pride Cup, as they break another first, with a Women’s Football match to be a part of the Pride Cup.

  • Yarra Valley Pride Cup brings families together with Pride – Yarra Valley Pride Cup
In 2012, Yarra Glen Footballer Jason Ball elevated the realities of homophobia in Australian Rules Football, by publicly coming out and talking to the nation about how he hid who he was in order to feel accepted in the sport he loved to play.
While his teammates figured it out before he told them and were supportive when he came it, he spent years hiding who he was, afraid of being discovered, when he should have just been able to focus on playing footy like everyone else.
2 years after coming out on the football grounds of Yarra Glen, Ball was a part of the first Pride Cup, proving that, given the chance Football can embrace the LGBTI community and talk about inclusion and diversity with pride and courage.
Now 5 years later, the Yarra Glen Pride Cup is the launching pad for a professional Pride format in AFL as well a blue print for Pride Games around the state and country, all because the Yarra Glen community saw that they could do something more within their own community to support young LGBTI people who just want to enjoy footy.
Dean Arcuri spoke to Yarra Glen locals Luke and Paul Keedle, a father and son, about what this kind of LGBTI visibility has meant to them, in helping to create a more inclusive space within their own relationship.
