  • 068 Laura Calandrella - Revisited

LAURA CALANDRELLA is a leadership strategist and consultant. She has spent the past two decades working with organizations from across the environmental community to design collaborative approaches to our most pressing issues. Her career began as a conservation biologist and international development practitioner. These experiences gave Laura firsthand knowledge of the power of collaboration, but also the difficulties that arise when diverse perspectives align under a shared vision for change. • 064 Vikas Bhatia - Revisited

Vikas is a Fortune 100 Executive turned Executive Coach and Leadership Development consultant. He is a unique combination of pragmatism and vision given his extensive frontline experience in the corporate world and being a philosopher / systems thinker at heart. He is passionately committed to a transformation in the way of being and doing of leaders, managers and teams, all for the sake of a world that works better for all, starting with oneself. Vikas invites his clients to go deep to the root causes of problems and has the skill to escort them back to the place from which they can take effective action for sustainable change. By working with Vikas, leaders and teams in Fortune 100 companies, mid-sized firms and start-ups alike have transformed themselves and their environments.

In this episode Steve and Vikas discuss:

    • Concepts that’ll help with dealing with daily stressors
    • Finding happiness and contentment
    • Breaking free from primordial tendencies of anxiety and fear of the unknown
    • Living for the weekend vs. loving what you do

    Key Takeaways:

    • The journey is the destination, relax into it. Stress and anxiety is a natural thing in life, but there’s more to life than just these two feelings.
    • We peg our happiness or contentment on some external thing that we have to acquire. Doing so would be like, “postponing living”, waiting for something to happen for you to finally breathe.
    • Learn to see this moment as everything and be satisfied in any circumstance.
    • We spend so much of our life working, only to do something that sucks the life out of us - it’s a tragedy. Let meaning seep into your career, find a way to either do what you love or love what you do.

  • 063 Steve and Jason - What’s Mindset Coaching Anyway?

In this episode Steve and Jason discuss:

    • What is mindset coaching?
    • How could mindset coaching be useful to somebody?
    • Why knowing what to do is sometimes not enough
    • Necessities for long-term sustainable change

    Key Takeaways:

    • A lot of people know strategies that increase success, but the mindset makes all the difference.
    • Let’s not only work on our actions, but think also on what we think about our actions.
    • The right scripts and right actions may get you short-term results. But sustainable, long-term, life-style-changing types of results start by digging into your mindset and being self-aware.
    • We are made to be in community with one another, we need one another.

“Think about what we think first and let that thinking ultimately dictate how we act.” - Steve Scanlon

  • 062 Jason and Steve - Future Proof

In this episode Steve and Jason discuss:

    • What is future proof and temporal integration
    • Our brains’ tendency whenever we’re going through a difficult time
    • The impact of knowing that difficult times will end for people.
    • Three tips for future proofing your life: Focus, Self-Care, and Community

    Key Takeaways:

    • Remember the temporal nature of difficult events and circumstances. Things are going to change and it’s okay.
    • Knowing that the “suck will end” has been proven to give people hope. Future proofing yourself starts with believing that there will be a future.
    • Stay focused. Multitasking (or actually, “switch-tasking”) increases stress and decreases productivity.
    • Practice Self-Care. It feels like a luxury, but it’s a necessity.
    • Try to do community differently. Seek connection with people.

  • 061 Eric Harvey - Different Ways of Seeing the World

Eric Harvey is a scholar and teacher with a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East from Brandeis University. His academic research deals with the historical development of the Psalms and with issues of disability in the ancient world. Eric went blind in the middle of his doctoral studies and finished the work with a very different set of skills than when he started. In addition to his core research, he now advocates for accessibility and universal inclusion in higher education and beyond.

In this episode Steve and Eric discuss:

    • Thriving despite blindness - the difficult 5%
    • How blindness has helped reveal the myth of self-reliance and independence
    • Feeling powerless even as an able-bodied person.
    • Shattering your own myths

    Key Takeaways:

    • Many unnamed people have contributed to who you are today and what you’ve achieved, there’s a scaffolding of humanity around you that you’re not aware of.
    • Acknowledge the people that enable you. Individualism hides a lot of interdependence beneath.
    • Know what you’re truly capable of, see it from another way, shatter the myths that hinder you from being fully human.
    • You can’t just pour knowledge into someone’s head, you can only be a catalyst of the idea-making process in their own life.

“Disability… shattered this myth of independence that anybody does anything on their own… We are standing on an enormous mountain of contributions by people whose names and lives we’ll never know...” - Eric Harvey

    • Transformation sometimes takes humility or humiliation
    • Ask what “back to basics” mean to you and how you can apply that
