My last minute wisdom is that when the sky is falling, and it seems like we're in a complete state of chaos, professionally, personally, nationally, it is not true. We are not in that state unless we own that state. Don't let the sky fall on you. Dig deep for some strength and reach out to people who can keep encouraging you when you start feeling overwhelmed in this time.

    uFlexReward, Unilever.

    His entrepreneurial journey.

What has changed and not changed in software.

    Ken's Bio

Ken Charman has been involved in major enterprise software projects since 1987, specifically in financial consolidation and reporting systems, and has built high-performance teams in IT start-ups that were acquired by Oracle, SAP, IBM and Sungard. In 2009 he headed up Simulstrat, a spinout start-up from the King's College London Department of War Studies, that ran simulations and corporate wargames to test business strategy, including response to the Swine Flu epidemic, and which was later sold to Deloitte.

Ken is now the CEO of tech startup company, uFlexReward - a cutting edge HR tech platform that collates all costs to do with employees (salary, pension, bonus, shares etc) into one real time platform. The technology was built for Unilever, underpinned by agile methodology, and has now been rolled out across Unilever globally; it's a case study Ken presents to masters students at the University of Oxford.

Recognising how crucial total reward data is in being able to look at early choices when it comes to workplace restructuring post COVID-19, Ken's team has now designed a corporate wargame for companies to research alternative solutions to redundancy as the pandemic continues to wreak economic havoc.

I'm gonna go back to that plea, to HR to stand up and lead the world. It needs us in this moment of crisis. So, it's not advice. It's a request that we show the way that we show that there are other things that we can do to help companies survive and cut costs and create a fairer society. Advice

I would say while COVID has us sheltering in place and many people listening to this now will see a lot of the limitations lifted off of where they live. But no matter where you are, if you're sheltering in place, or if you're heading back into the office, you still can connect online with people.

I encourage you to expand your network, meet someone new, set up a virtual coffee meeting over zoom or Skype or hang out or whatever that may be. Just find a way to build your network, learn something new, and learn about someone new. That's my parting thought.

How to have a remote team and a great culture.

What startups are getting wrong about HR.

    Shrav and Candice's Bio

Shrav and Candice founded People Runway to support startups going through transformation and to work with companies to build their culture, people roadmap and people processes. This includes career paths, performance management, manager and leadership development, diversity, equity & inclusion initiatives, and HR infrastructure.

Shrav & Candice were founding members of Google's People Operations team and helped scale Google teams, offices, and processes during periods of high-growth and change. Between the two of them, they were at Google for 25+ years. More recently, Shrav was Chief People Officer at Coursera and joined Candice in 2018 to start People Runway

During Covid-19 much of their work has focused on leadership coaching, sustaining company culture and living company values through the crisis, consulting HR leaders on critical decisions, and helping companies build a "remote first" mindset.

If you're working for your organization on how to improve some of your processes, we're happy to talk through and help you figure out how you might do that.

    Candice's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/creimers/

    Advice

Top of mind for us right now has been employee experience in so many different ways. This has come out in our conversation, where companies are really defining themselves on how they're treating their employees through the COVID-19 crisis. Being flexible and supportive in when folks are working and what those expectations might be based on people that are directly indirectly impacted by COVID-19.

But also, you know, being flexible and recognizing the reminder of the systemic racial and injustices that are happening and the impact that it's having on employees as well and taking a stand in solidarity. But also looking internally as an organization and how you can be better as an organization internally also. I just I think it's been a tough time. But I think this is also an opportunity to see change, a shift for improvement. We believe we can improve the employee experience. But they've got to be intentional and they've got to be thoughtful in how they approach it.

    @jasoncavnessHR across social media

    We talk about the following

What is wrong with the way the world teaches math.

    The importance of public speaking.

    Elephant Learning Math Academy.

    Why HR is important

    Aditya's Bio

Dr. Aditya Nagrath is a visionary leader on a mission to change the way that the world teaches mathematics. Dr. Nagrath is the co-founded Elephant Learning Math Academy which is a gamification of a proven curriculum. On average, children in Elephant Learning learn 1.5 years of mathematics in 10 weeks using the system just 30 minutes per week.

Dr. Nagrath, at age 14, taught himself C++ and continued on to read books on game development and neural networks which are the basis for modern day artificial intelligence. He graduated from the University of Denver with a dual major of Mathematics and Computer Science, continuing on to graduate school while working full time as a software developer to graduate with a PhD in Mathematics & Computer Science 7 years later.

After at decade in University, Dr. Nagrath graduated to found Elephant Head Software where he lead a team of no more than 10 engineers to bring over 35 different product lines with over 50 different applications to market between 2009 and 2016. In 2016, Dr. Nagrath co-founded Elephant Learning with Professor Alvaro Arias from the University of Denver in order to bring transformational change to America's education system.

3 out of 4 students are not proficient at High School Mathematics, leading to 69% of STEM majors switching majors to a major with less mathematics. Math deficiencies happen completely amongst income lines leading to a preservation of the cycle of poverty as mathematic scores often predict high school drop out and over all scores.

Elephant Learning provides mathematical activities from counting to calculus that are proven to foster deep understanding in mathematics with transformational results for children through all walks of life. Empowerment is understanding the concepts that hold us back, enjoyment in the classroom setting is understanding the teacher.

Dr. Nagrath is also a seasoned public speaker, software developer, social media marketer, and businessman.

    Aditya's Advice

I had a conversation with someone the other day on a podcast and it was about a context for disempowerment. A context for disempowerment is the idea that I can't do something. The reality is that I believe human beings can achieve anything that they want, if they adapt to the situation.

They take the opportunities that are presented to them. It's important to identify where you're creating contexts of disempowerment in your life. I mean, it's something else and learning now that we're kind of working on that actively because our mission is to empower and if there's a context for disempowerment, then it's very challenging to be empowering.
