Would you like to hear the story of how I got freedom from compromising on pay and consistently end up at jobs I complained about? The exit came in taking a leap of faith to do what I loved while giving up the demand that I make money right away. From 2001 to 2011 I stuck to working whatever job I could get accepting whatever pay was offered and never refusing a job I applied to because of pay. In sticking with that job while sending out applications to others, I thought I was being smart in jumping from one low paying job I did not enjoy to another. With culture telling me the best escape was to get an education at any cost, I started graduate school with the hope of breaking the cycle only to discover I was actually guaranteeing there would be no escape for a long time by borrowing more money with student loans. When I started my business in 2011, I hoped that it would give me freedom from the cycle of compromising my values and what I wanted to do in exchange for a small paycheck which would barely allow me to pay my bills. 3 years later as I was about to go out of business, I reflected how crazy it was that nearly all of the work I had done was similar to working jobs with the boss being clients instead of a manager and without any of the health insurance, benefits, or security a job provides. In 2014 I made the crazy leap of faith to just start doing what I loved because my financial situation was so hopeless I kept thinking about how would be the best way to go out of business. I realized that if I knew it would all fail, I might as well start teaching everyone what I learned for free which is what I did. I created classes on Udemy and gave tons of free coupons away after a year of struggling to get anything to work online to make anything close to “passive income.” Three months after taking that leap of faith, I made over $10,000 in revenue in one month and over $20,000 the next month. Over the next 2 years I made $600,000 more which allowed me to pay off hundreds of thousands in debt I had ran up to keep from going out of business. Today I still face the same choice as everyone else does and have more opportunities to ever to compromise on income because so many clients would have me work for them. A viewer asked me the other day why with still so much student loan debt in my family I would not just accept any work I could get from clients? This video is my answer because I set my hourly rate at what I think is fair based on what value I offer and I do not accept offers lower than that or outside of the system I make available to work. How do we balance out what we want to earn per hour with what wage people will actually pay us? What works to set an hourly rate we are happy with? For freelancing online this tends to continuously be challenging. Will you hear the stories of exploring how much to charge and the series of jobs I went through before ever getting into doing work I loved for a great hourly wage? After graduating with my bachelor’s degree in 2006, I accepted a job for less than $10 where I was risking my life because I was unwilling to give up the demand to have my own place or move home with my parents. I thought I was smart by trying to keep a job always and just move up hourly pay over and over again. The problem was that every time I got a better job, I just made an excuse to upgrade where I lived and increase my expenses. Never once did I successfully negotiate my salary in taking jobs until I finally negotiated an extra $3,000 a year in graduate school. While you might think having my own business gives me freedom from having to negotiate salary, it actually tends to be the opposite. Instead of thinking about my pay only when getting a job, every potential client brings up the same issue of how much for what? Now I have a simple system starting at a rate I was excited to work at of $149. Every client that hired me after that I rated my rate by a few percent because I figured if they were willing to pay it, why not charge a little bit more? Now my minimum for one hour is $299 on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/jerrybanfield or a minimum of $249 if 25 hours are ordered. In the face of the same economic uncertainty we all face in different ways, viewers have suggested I compromise. Why not take a lower rate say $50 to make videos you enjoy anyway? What I have learned is that if I am going to do work, it is up to me to have the self-respect and respect for the person hoping to employ me to only accept work I will be happy to do. Selecting an hourly rate I am excited to work at is a big part of me being happy to do work. While $50 per hour is more than I made most of my life, today I have spent so much time working for free that I am grateful to make around $15,000 in income each month without needing to do anything. Therefore, why would I accept work for less than $249 an hour on a 25 hour commitment when I do not NEED more money? Why not just do whatever feels right each day without concerning myself with how much money it makes so that I am available to take $299 an hour work when it is available instead of being fully committed to making $50 an hour without the time or energy to do anything that might be useful for free? This continues to be a challenging subject for me to share on because it is so emotionally charged with rational and irrational arguments from inside and out. I hope sharing about it again is useful for each of us today as we work to make a world where we all are happy with what we receive in exchange for our service! How would you feel with a great night of sleep each night? Hear what works for me to consistently get 8 hours of sleep nightly including falling asleep, staying in REM and deep sleep, and waking up feeling restored! The simple truth I see is that people getting good sleep are consistently happier, healthier, and more productive than those waking up frequently, functioning on small amounts of sleep, sleeping sporadically, and struggling to get a good night of sleep. Does the insanity of day time life translate into the same for sleep? Is not the battle to get good sleep a tool to gain motivation for fixing the rest of problems in daily life? For me, the most unhappy parts of my life also found me with the most disrupted sleep. I start by sharing what my life looks like today with balanced energy throughout the day matched with the ability to relax and sit on the couch watching a masterclass by deadmau5 for 40 minutes before getting up to write this. At night when I get in bed, I consistently fall asleep fast without the torturous hours I used to endure of tossing and turning or without the handicaps I used to depend on like alcohol to pass out instead of fall asleep. What works for me today to help avoid waking up early and be calm when I go to bed? Listen to the stories I share to see how blacking out all sunlight in my bedroom helps me stay sound asleep longer and how having 2 HOURS of pre sleep routines ensures that my brain is prepared to let go instead of worry and obsess when it comes to bed time. One family member inspire me to make this because they have struggled for more than ten years to get healthy sleep routines. In my experience, adjusting sleep routines should be simple if I am living healthy but when I am living an insane life, it is impossible to truly change anything in my life from diet to sleep to alcohol or sex habits. I rely on support from hundreds of others from authors to a 12 step recovery program to spending time with my family and advice from strangers, counselors, friends, and family members to help with the insanity. I share how for more than ten years myself my life was so filled with being insane that I could never make any progress on areas like getting better sleep and staying healthy without complete outside control. Today I am grateful that making changes in my life is simple because I focus on being of service to you each day. My exercise for today is to remember my gratitude for the THOUSANDS of people that have shared their life experience ranging from seemingly completely unrelated areas to direct tips like black out curtains which have helped me today to consistently get a great night of sleep. Earning money online seems really difficult at first and I hope this video makes it seem much easier. In my first year working online, I struggled to make anything. In the nearly five years that have followed, I have earned almost $2 million online in payments received with around $5 million in total sales. The absolute easiest way to get started is simply to work with friends, family, and people you ALREADY KNOW. How do I know? My friends collectively earned over $100,000 last year working for me! They never had to send in a job application or a resume. As work came along for me, I asked them for help and they learned what they needed to do to provide services. Given most of us are connected to hundreds of people, the statistics suggest that most of us have someone in our lives that could benefit from our help online. If we ask around and share what we can do in a manner of collaboration rather than desperation, the odds are in our favor for finding an amazing opportunity to freelance and make money doing all work that is online. IF you search and look and absolutely cannot find anyone in your life that needs your help, then simply being useful and of service in the places you already hang out may produce the same opportunity. I have spent probably close to a hundred thousand dollars paying students, viewers, coinstructors, comment posters, group members, clients, and customers for help with my business. While I experienced only annoyance in doing giveaways and contests where people begged for money, I love to invite people helping me online to participate financially in my business. The secret is that without all of their help, I would not be here with you either! Collaborating with others effectively is how my business grows and other online business owners know that same truth. Growth tends to focus around we that work well with others meaning just helping others solve problems with comments, remaining interested, and showing up day after day I think is likely to produce amazing results based on my experience working with others. I have made the majority of my money online by generously giving as much as I could stand and setting up ways for people to give back by purchasing my online courses. The best part about this tip is that it is not hard! Looking closer at what we already do tends to produce much bigger results than trying to find something new. When people are struggling in my experience with finding work, they are also consistently ignoring the relationships they already have and seeking something new which is challenging to find because so many others do the same!
