Jim MacPhee is a former executive leader with Disney who joins to share some of his lessons on becoming an inspirational leader throughout his 43 year career. His experiences range from starting as a boat driver and retiring as the COO/Senior Vice President of Walt Disney World. We spend a lot of time discussing the impact of building relationships and creating positive experiences. He emphasizes the fact that effective leaders make people feel valued. Throughout his career at Disney, Jim discovered that true engagement involves looking people in the eye, asking about their lives, and listening to their responses. He believes that caring leadership fueled by authentic engagement can turn average performances into extraordinary ones.

I love when he says that the true measure of an experience is how an organization or individual makes someone feel. Recently, I was invited by Church on the Rock in St. Charles, Missouri, to speak at their Marketplace ministry event. While I was there, they asked me to sit in and record an episode of their Leadership Lifter podcast. The tables were turned. This time Pastor David Blunt had me on a podcast as the guest. The conversation was so good that I wanted to share it with you as an episode of The Jody Maberry Show.

During our conversation I revisited my journey from Illinois to Washington State. It was fun remembering stories of my past as a park ranger and my transition into podcasting. It made me realize how much of my own story was shaped by the very topic we discussed - the power of staff, service, and stories in setting an organization apart.

An important lesson I've learned over the years is that those are the only three ways to stand out. Having spent several years as a park ranger, I've seen firsthand the impact of staff, service, and stories on the visitor experience. Every park has trees and trails, but it's the human element - the interactions with park staff, the level of service provided, and the stories visitors take home - that truly differentiates one park from another. This concept holds true for any organization, reminding us that it's people's experiences that truly set us apart.

"There is no work-life balance, just life. Prioritize what's important and put your energy where it needs to be." 

The conversation during the last episode really hit home on something that is near and dear to my heart. Chris Neema and Michael McGreevey highlighted the importance of nurturing relationships within the family. We had a candid discussion about parenting, relationships, and the transition that happens when our children leave home.

During the episode, Chris and Michael asked me some thought-provoking questions that have stuck with me. We discussed the challenges couples face when their children grow up and leave home, as well as the need to redefine our relationships and individual identities. It really struck a chord with me because my son recently graduated high school and is going away to college. This has been a major transition for our family, and it has made me realize the opportunity to focus more on building a deeper relationship with my daughter.

We also touched on the differences in parenting approaches between spouses. It can be challenging when we have different beliefs and philosophies, but it's important to address those differences and find a common ground. We shared some personal stories and insights that I think many parents will find relatable.

Throughout the episode, we emphasized the significance of spending quality time with our spouse and each child individually. It's crucial to prioritize these relationships and make intentional efforts to strengthen them. The conversation was full of practical tips and advice that have helped us in our own journeys as parents.

"Often it's up to you to make the decision that changes your own life."

Ray Edwards was a copywriter and marketer at the top of his game. But in 2011, his life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. As the disease progressed, he found himself in constant pain, unable to walk, and even contemplating suicide. Despite trying various treatments, nothing seemed to work.

After much reflection he found himself considering that key to living well, even with his circumstances, was to change his mindset. He realized that he had the power within himself to change his mindset and live a fulfilling life despite his diagnosis. Drawing upon his skills as a persuader, Ray crafted a raw, compelling sales letter to himself, outlining the reasons to live and the purpose he could find in his life. The letter was the catalyst for him to undergo a transformative brain surgery called Deep Brain Stimulation. The surgery improved his symptoms significantly, and he was able to once again enjoy life.

Ray's story serves as a powerful testament to the importance of living with intention and finding purpose in even the most challenging situations. Intentional living can transform even the most challenging situations. "You've got to work hard to be ready when the lucky break happens." Last episode, Jerry Dugan joined to share about his passion for servant leadership and the lessons he's learned in his career. As we do on The Jody Maberry show, when we have a guest, that guest comes back the very next episode to ask me three questions. These questions are not prompted by me or influenced by me. He really came up with some good ones.  Jerry's three questions are:

1. What lessons from your park ranger days would you say still carry over today to being a servant leader?
2. What is the rut you help people get out of? 
3. How would that person go about getting that first gig?

He even manages to sneak in a fourth question about Bigfoot. As Jerry asked each question it led to interesting discussions about how our experiences can shape us into better leaders who prioritize serving others. Not only by leading, but also genuinely caring for those we lead. Many people that transition from public service to entrepreneurship find it challenging to promote themselves. It often goes against the very core of servant leadership.

“Our ruts are really not that deep. They're not that hard to climb out of.”

Jerry Dugan never expected that a simple conversation about Nutella would lead him on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. He is a compassionate speaker and author who aims to empower men in their thirties and forties to shatter the barriers keeping them from realizing their full potential.

As an avid podcast listener, he found himself drawn to the stories of others and the lessons they had to share. During a New Years resolution jog on New Year's Day he realized he wanted to inspire others as well. This led to the creation of a father-son podcast that would ultimately change his life. He realized that through his podcast, Beyond the Rut, he was inadvertently inspiring himself by showing up every week to talk about something that mattered.

As the years passed, Jerry noticed that he was stuck in a rut in his personal and professional life. It was time for a change. Through introspection and the support of his family, Jerry made the decision to leave his corporate job. He spent time writing a book that captured all that he had learned to help others break free from their ruts. The podcast evolved from a men's ministry to a place where people share their stories and practical advice on how to get out of ruts in their lives. He now has a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment after recognizing the importance of seizing the moment and taking the necessary steps towards personal growth.
