Wisdom from the Abbey–Mother Hilda–Play His Song (Mother Hilda is reminded of an old Jewish legend that after David had slain Goliath, King Saul invited him into his palace to honour him. King Saul had a harp which had produced nothing but harsh sounds from it, no matter how many illustrious musicians played it. David took it up and drew such exquisite music from it that every man was moved. The future King David explained that each man tried to play his own song on those strings, but that he sang to the harp its own song. He recalled its youth, how it blossomed and grew, and how its death when it was cut down meant the start of a new life in which it would glorify God as a harp. And so it is with the Messiah, Jesus. Many will try to sing their own song on his harp and their tunes will be harsh. We must sing on his harp, his own song, the song of his life, passions, joys, sufferings, death, and resurrection. Only then will our music be true. What a delight it is to God when we so abandon ourselves to him so that he can play his song on the harp of our soul.)
