The JRPG Report

TGS 2020 has come and gone. It was an awesome show this year even with being 100% online. We had tons of great new trailers to view and fun presentations. No big announcements but I didn't expect any either. Atelier Ryza 2 has announced a PS5 version in addition to PS4 and Switch. And owners of the PS4 version can upgrade for free to the PS5 version. We saw the first gameplay for Disgaea 6, leaving some online very displeased. The switch to 3D has some worried to say the least. Lots of other fun stories from TGS too. Dalton gives us his review for Persona 4: Golden at the end. He'll be back Sunday for a fun conversation!

It's one of the, if not the, biggest JRPG gaming weeks of the year. TGS 2020 kicked off today so I'll bring you all the news from day 1 as well as any news that broke in the past week. We new info and trailers for both Nier titles coming out including the release dates. Disgaea 6 images and info broke before the show started. And we have first trailer for Go! Go! 5 Jigen Game Neptune: re★Verse, more than likely the first JRPG for the PS5. Plus all the pre TGS news, all the big JRPG's on the Big in Japan Sale on PSN, and Jordan's review of The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki. So exciting to be a gamer right now. Special TGS 2020 Part 2 podcast coming this week!

Let's welcome back my friend Jordan to the podcast! This week we dive deep into the Final Fantasy XVI debut trailer. What did we like and what did we not? FF VII Remake pops up so we talk about what the reveal of FF XVI means to it, when each may come out, and other fun stuff. After the break we talk all things Legend of Heroes: the series past, how to play the games, and why it's such an important JRPG series. We hope you enjoy our hour or so chat!

The Playstation 5 dropped two bombs yesterday during its Showcase. Lastly was the price and release date. But they opened the show with Final Fantasy XVI, confirming its existence with a 4 minute trailer. Hear all my thoughts good and bad about this PS5 exclusive game. The next day during the Nintendo Direct Mini, we were treated with the reveal of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. I'll give you all the details we know so far about this game. We were then treated to two new Monster Hunter titles for the Switch as well as Rune Factory 5. All that in just the first half of the show! It's been a busy past 24 hours to say the least. The second half is full of great stories too. And I started playing a game last night that truly blurs the line of what a JRPG is or isnt. Thanks for listening. TGS is next week!

With less than two weeks until Tokyo Game Show 2020, the news is light this week. As it will be next week I'd guess. So we lead with details about Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory. I know its not a JRPG but it is a shoot off of a super popular one. And like I said there isn't a ton to talk about. We did learn a bit about the upcoming 20th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts in 2022 and the series future plans. I talk about a few other small stories and have a great listener review from Michael for Banner of the Maid. Thanks for listening! No Sunday Special this week sorry.

This week we are proud to welcome Darrel Wijaya to the JRPG Report Sunday Special Episode 29 (we got a bit out of order last week!). Darrel is the founder of Nomina Games and the creator of the new game on Steam, The Revenant Prince. You can check out this awesome game here http://therevenantprince.com/. We chat of course about this game and its creation, but also his inspirations in making a JRPG for the first time. It's a fun interview and we hope you enjoy it. Here are all the links you may want to check out for The Revenant Prince and Nomina Games:

Europe's biggest gaming conference has come and gone. I'll go over all the announcement, release dates, news, and trailers from Gamescom 2020. We finally have a western release date for Y's IX: Monstrum Nox to look forward to. Genshin Impact will launch for PS4 alongside PC and mobile devices at the end of September. Kingdom Hearts showed gameplay and announced a release date for Melody of Memory. And Scarlet Nexus debuted new characters along with tons of gameplay. Then we still have news from Atelier Ryza 2, Eiyuden Chronicles final Kickstarter numbers, and much more to cover. Thanks for listening and waiting until our new day for release of Thursday.

Longtime listener of the podcast, Hans joins me for today's Sunday Special. We'll talk about a few different topics including: gaming in Europe vs America, his experiences growing up and getting into JRPG's, Gamescon, and the PC vs console debate. He may even share with us a rant about DLC and post launch content. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.

In a recent issue of Weekly Famitsu, Falcom President Kindo talked about post launch updates for Hajimari no Kiseki as well as the next game in the series. We knew it wouldn't be a sequel and there wasn't much information to go on. However changes seem to be coming to the Legend of Heroes games. Hear what they are as well as my initial thoughts. We have a next to last update for Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes and its Kickstarter. As well as some other fun stories in a short podcast. Just not a ton of news this week. Thanks for listening!

Let's do something fun and relaxing this weekend. I found my old Suikoden V Soundtrack sampler cd the other day so I felt compelled to share. All this talk of Eiyuden Chronicles has my old school JRPG feelings coming back. This was one of my favorite PS2 games. I hope you enjoy it as well.
