The JRPG Report

After talking about VVVtunia for a few months and even its recent delay, we get word of its western release date. And name change. It will be called Neptunia Virtual Stars in the west and be available in 2021. Also in case you were curious we did an extra news podcast this weekend since there were plenty of things to chat about. Including Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning getting a surprise remaster, dlc for Fell Seal, and Tales of Crestoria being delayed. Thanks so much for listening! We'll be back on Wednesday with more great stories.

After around 15 hours of playtime, I have a pretty good feel for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. At the end of the podcast you can hear those initial thoughts. We've got a bunch of smaller news stories to cover including Sword Art Online, delays for Compile Hearts titles, and new gameplay from Fairy Tale. All those and much more on a fun episode. Perhaps in an effort to make Jordan and I look silly, Monolith Soft released a few tidbits of last minute news about Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. Nothing shocking but would have been nice to include in the Sunday Special. In just two days the world will be in Switch JRPG heaven once again. In other news there's a rumor about a Disney + Kingdom Hearts show, Dragon Quest announced 3 Adventure of Dai games, and The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki adds VR support? It's an odd week to say the least. Throw in two Tales of Crestoria trailers and you have the makings of Episode 114 of the JRPG Report! Thanks for listening and super thanks for supporting the podcast. Please consider funding the show via Patreon or the Anchor link at the bottom of the description.

The Nintendo Switch JRPG community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition to arrive on Friday May 29. We we preview the game and highlight some of the key differences. Jordan played the original back on the Wii so he'll give his insight into why the game was so great in the first place. First we chat about our shared love of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, then look ahead to the remaster of part 1. For bonus, Jordan and I look ahead to what's next in the franchise and what other Wii games should be remastered. Get ready for a super fun chat!

The day after we recorded last week, Nintendo drops a surprise announcement. Paper Mario The Origami King will release July 17, having been previously unknown. It looks like a blast and will hopefully have some JRPG elements. We have a ton of other news stories too including Phantasy Star Online 2 release date on PC and a possible release window for Genshin Impact. Let's take a break and tell a story. About how I came into the world of JRPG's and started a lifetime love of them. I'll begin where any good story starts: at the beginning. I'll relive my memories and the games that were a part of them. If watching on YouTube I'll show my copy of them too. This first part of the story goes back to the NES and SNES days. I hope you enjoy it!

In typical fashion the weeks before a big trade show, its a slower news week. Even with the move towards digital formats this week, we have only a handful of stories. That being said Scarlett Nexus from Bandai Namco and the team behind Tales of Vesperia, made it debut and looked impressive doing so. Heavy on action but in a slick looking anime fashion, we got our first look at the game. We also received a new story trailer for this fall Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV. Plus a few other smaller stories including Tokyo Game Show officially cancelling its physical version. Thanks for listening!

I ran across this article last week and thought it would make an excellent podcast. Writer Nadia Oxford emailed back and forth with Final Fantasy 6's translator Ted Woolsey. It's a fascinating dive into my 2nd favorite game of all time. And all the troubles Mr. Woolsey had in bringing the game to a western audience. See the link below for the article but I read it all for you here. Thanks for listening!

With about 3 weeks until its May 29 release, the hype for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition keeps growing. We got details on the new Future Connected post game content, two new web commercials for Japan, and meet the cast for this upcoming JRPG gem. It was by the lead story in a otherwise slow news week. We got a release date for Ys Memories of Celceta for PS4 and talk about the new system in Hajimari No Keseki and its limited edition. Thanks as always for listening our weekly JRPG podcast.
