  • Modern Day Slavery: The Epidemic of Human Trafficking

    Shoot Me A Message!

This is a content trigger warning. In this episode, we will be discussing human trafficking, sex trafficking, and assault, and this may be difficult and or triggering for some of my listeners. Please use discretion when deciding to listen to the show and take care of your mental and emotional well-being.

On this episode, I had the privilege to sit down for an important discussion, on human trafficking with two amazing guests.

Visual artist and Filmmaker, Malinda Baum, and Author, Speaker and Host of the Love& B Loved podcast, Lena Cebula,

    • Human and labour trafficking affects boys as well as girls ~Malinda Baum.
    • Boys are more susceptible to trafficking as traffickers find it easier to target them.
    • Recruitment for trafficking often happens through grooming, which can involve building trust with the victim through activities such as sports, online games, and hanging out on the street corner ~ Malinda Baum.
    • For girls, sex trafficking often involves grooming through manipulation, fear, isolation, guilt, and shame ~Lena Cebula.
    • Traffickers often play on our human need for love, belonging, community, and care.
    • Risk factors for human trafficking include dysfunctional families, substance abuse, and mental health issues  ~Lena Cebula.

Signs that someone is being trafficked

The signs that someone may be in a trafficking situation, include secretive behavior, depression, paranoia, and changes in behavior such as using drugs or skipping school, grades dropping, unexplainable tattoos, unusual calls, doing things out of their income level and lots more. It is important to talk to individuals, especially children, and ask questions if there is suspicion that someone may be in a trafficking situation.

  • Grieving Your Way: A Kandid Discussion on Grief & Grieving

    Shoot Me A Message!

On this episode I had the chance to sit down for a much needed chat about grief and grieving with by a few amazing guests.

Ms. Cindy Burns, Facilitator of the Widows and Widowers: Finding Purpose support group on Facebook and the  Widows and Widowers: Finding Purpose Facebook page.

Ms. Hope Reager, Founder of Grief 2 Hope, a virtual peer grief support group. Hope says "grief changes your entire world, it can also inspire you to change the world".

Ms. Choyce Simmons, Certified Grief Support specialist, Grief facilitator, Author, and Founder of Beautiful Minds, LLC

Mr. Paul David Madsen, Author of "Men Grieve Too: Tools to Help Men Deal."

    Key Takeaways:

    • "I think my take on grief is, it's something that we have in our hearts forever. It's something that stays with us and cannot be healed with time. We can actually move forward." ~Hope Reager
    • "There is no expiration date on grieving. ~Cindy Burns
    • "I'm a firm believer that you grieve because you loved, and so the amount of love that you have for that thing that you have lost, or that person that you have lost will determine how long you're going to grieve that person." ~Choyce Simmons
    • "We grieve all the time. I mean, it never goes away. We just get used to it." ~Paul David Madsen
    • Grief is an individual journey. ~Paul David Madsen
    • "Feel your feelings. Give them a name, you know, disappointment, fear, guilt, all those kind of different things that aren't talked about in the stages of grief. Let them come, you let them visit you. Don't invite them to stay." ~Cindy Burns
    • "Honor those that you've lost by living with inspiration, hope, and commitment, and to never waste a moment, because those days pass quickly as you know now that you're grieving. So invest in yourself and by honoring them each and every day." ~Hope Reager

    • "Your grief journey is yours. Grievers, don't worry about what you're supposed to do. You do what you do. " ~Paul David Madsen
    • "Take one day, one minute, one hour at a time. Your grief is your own. There is no timeframe on it. It may look differently because it is uniquely yours." ~Choyce Simmons

If you know someone who's grieving and don't know what to say or do, just "show up and shut up." Do what needs to be done, cooking, cleaning, childcare, walking the dog or just sitting with them and holding space but most importantly, be empathetic and compassionate even if you don't understand what their feeling!

  • A Kandid Chat on Gun Ownership, Safety and Gun Violence w/ Corey ”Safetyman” Jones

    Shoot Me A Message!

On this episode I was blessed to sit down with the Founder & CEO of Safetyman Consulting LLC, Mr. Corey Jones, who gave some awesome tips & gems on gun ownership, gun safety, situational awareness & readiness!

    The Stats:

    • According to the 2021 National Firearm Survey, 32% of Americans say they personally own a firearm, and that equates to more than 81.4 million Americans who own a gun or guns.

    Safetymans' Gun Ownership Gems:

    • “If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.”
    • Read the level of maturity of the children in your household. Who periodically visits your household? Do we want them to know it's there and remove the mystery, or do we wanna hide it, lock it up and keep it away?
    • Education is key. Locking the gun up is key and training is paramount
    • When feasible you must give a verbal warning to the person that you are about to use force to stop their aggressive actions.
    • Verbal commands are Stop, get outta my house. I have a gun.

    • Give loud, repetitive verbal commands for several reasons. Number 1, I want the bad guy or bad guys to hear it. I wanna give them the ability to retreat, to stop their aggressive actions. Number 2, if somebody else in the house is on the phone with nine one one. We know that 911 is recording everything, so they're gonna hear that in the background. So that's gonna help protect you legally.

    Active Shooter Scenarios:

In an active shooter situation the key is preparedness! Make a plan when you're in a public place and practice the 3 Threes:

    • Find three places we can exit if there's an emergency
    • Find three places that we can hide and secure yourself so we can be safe
    • Find three improvised weapons if you have to attack the assailant:
    • If you attack the 3 D's are the goal : Disable- Distract- Disarm
    • Lastly, think about if you have it within you to go and run towards danger and attack this person to protect your friends, family, team members, work mates, and so forth? Or are you gonna run and hide? Either one is okay, but you have to know this beforehand!

On the fence about purchasing a firearm?

Contact Corey and go to the gun range with him and practice shooting.  See how you feel about it, see how firing it affects you. See how you do with hearing it go off, the feeling of it in your hands, how accurate you are and then you can make a more informed decision.

    Safetyman's Motto:

"If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready."

I was joined for this important discussion on depression and suicide by Suicide Prevention Speaker and Comedian, Frank King, aka "The Mental Health Comedian."

Frank has fought a lifetime battle with depression and chronic suicidality, and has turned that long, dark journey into eight, yes, eight TEDx talks and a wealth of insights on mental health!

    The Stats:

The number and rates of suicides in the US has increased 4% from 2020 to 2021 after two consecutive years of decline in 2019.

    • In 2020 45,979  Americans died by suicide.
    • Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the US.

    • 11.7% of adults age 18 or over experience regular feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety

    Key Takeaways:

    • 8 out of 10 people who are suicidal are ambivalent, meaning they cannot make up their minds.
    • 9 out of 10 people give hints in the last week leading up to an attempt, which means the vast majority of people want to be saved.
    • Suicide contagion or clusters, and it was defined as the exposure to suicide or suicidal behaviors within a family peer group or through media that can result in increases in suicide and suicidal behaviors
    • "Chronic suicidal ideation" is rare and is defined as the option of suicide always being on the menu as a solution for problems large and small.

    Top Warning Signs of depression:

    1. Eat too much, or can't eat
    2. sleep too much, or can't sleep.
    3. They have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, so they're often late for work or school, but they rally in the afternoon almost like a different person.
    4. They let their personal hygiene go.

    Warning Signs Of Suicidal Ideation:

    2. Death and Dying appears is a theme in their artwork of their music.

    4. Getting their affairs in order, especially if they're giving away prize possessions
    5. They've been depressed forever and now they're happy for no reason.

What To Say to Loved One is in Crisis:

"Say I'm here for you and I mean it. I know you're not lazy or crazy or self absorbed. I know that depression's a mental illness. Here's the good news. With time and treatment, things will get better. I will take the time. I'll help you get the treatment!"

If they're an immediate danger to themselves or somebody else, you have to dial 911 and get them help!

If they're not an immediate danger to themselves, but they won't go seek help call 988, the new 3-digit Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the volunteer on the other end will help you the best they can to get the phone in the hand of the person who's in crisis. They will guide you about what to say and do.

    Shoot Me A Message!

I had the absolute honor and pleasure to sit down with renowned singer, songwriter, speaker, activist, philanthropist, educator, producer, Author of "The Five Star Points for Success: Manifest Your Dreams, Live Your Life's Purpose," & Founder of "Spirit of Oya," Ms. Oya Thomas, for a very special artist spotlight chat!

    Spirit of Oya: The Movement

"It's really about being in the spirit. It's really about being connected to your soul. It's really about the truth. It's about the love that we talked about. This is a movement, like this isn't just me singing, just to have people like dance."

Look At Us Rise: The Single

"This is a song to really start the conversation about rising above adversity and discrimination and hate and us all coming together. We have to unite in love and come together and that's what this is all about. One love, we are one love, we are all spiritual beings having a human experience."

"The song and the lyric video for “Look at Us Rise” was inspired by my interactions with diverse groups of people from all walks of life, realizing that while some may not be aware of discrimination outside their own communities, everyone has experienced bullying and prejudice in some form; and each one is entitled to being treated with love and dignity." (Spirit of Oya YouTube page)

    In Her Words:

    • "Singing actually saved my life. Where I come from life isn't something you live, it's something you endure. Through sheer stubbornness and the love of making people smile, I fought to become a person that could empower those around me. Learning what it took to build relationship and create spaces, not only fostered growth, but rewarded it." ~Oya Thomas
    • "I just really believe that when you really, truly experience love and know that your love, it's really challenging, very difficult to hate anybody else." ~Oya Thomas
    • "What's going on on the outside of you is but an outer manifestation of what's going on on the inside." ~Oya Thomas

October is Domestic Violence Awareness, or as they're now calling it Intimate Partner Violence, and I have the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Ms. AnnDena McCleary, author of "Bent Not Broken, Rebirth of a Domestic Violence Survivor," and Founder of Bent Not Broken Inc.

AnnDena courageously shared her personal story of intimate partner violence and her road to healing and freedom.

"Bent Not Broken, Inc."  is her "baby" and was born out of the need to help women & men as they navigate the world free from trauma and abuse.

    • Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries.

    IN HER WORDS:

If he's talking down to you and he's isolating you and he's letting you feel less than the person, you need to question yourself, Do I need this?" ~AnnDena McCleary

"You are beautiful. And you are more than enough. When you could tell your yourself all of this, look yourself in the mirror, Get up every day and celebrate. Put on a little bit of lip gloss, a little bit of makeup, and look at yourself and smile. I am beautiful. I am worthy. And watch how your day goes from a frown to a smile. " ~AnnaDena McCleary

  • Code-Switching & Other Identity Dilemmas

    Shoot Me A Message!

On today's episode we’re diving into “code-switching, what it is, why we do it and do we really need to do it anymore?

Joining me for this long overdue discussion are :

Host of the Frazier Chronicles Podcast Mr. David Frazier

Industrial & Organizational  Psychology Practitioner, Founder & CEO of Junuri & Junuri Publishing and, Author of "Sharing My Lens: The College Experience", Dr. Juliette Nelson

Psychologist & Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan, Dr. Myles Durkee

In a poll conducted on my FB group "Kandidly Speaking"  I asked the question:

“How many of you code switch around non- BIPOC people and be honest?”

    Of the respondents;

40% said, I do it daily,

35% said I do it sometimes

15% said, Nope, I talk the same regardless.

10% said, What the hell is code switching?

    - In 2019, Pew Research found that 48% of college black college graduates in America felt the need to change how they talk around people of other races

So, what exactly is code-switching? Websters defines code-switching as, "the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation."

Well my guests each had their own unique, yet similar take on code-switching.

"I would define code switching as, adapting myself depending on the context I'm in, but typically to accommodate someone else's comfort. So to make them feel more comfortable so that they'll either treat me more fairly or not see me through the lens of stereotypes and stigma." -Dr. Myles Durkee

"So code switching. If I had to come up with a terminology for it, it would mean to me basically changing who you really are to meet a demand somewhere else." - David Frazier

"I would say code switch is changing your use of language in a sense, or vernacular to adjust to the environment that you're in. That might often come with the intention of trying to fit in. I think we might find that often happening in places where we don't necessarily identify with other people around us. But it can also occur in times when we want to fit in even the spaces with the people we identify with. " -Dr. Juliette Nelson

Code-switching often goes beyond language adjustments and can include, changing your hair, clothes, behaviors to be more acceptable and/or less threatening to in spaces where you are the minority.

Listen to the full discussion and let me know what your thoughts are on code-switching!

It was my  absolute pleasure to sit down with D. Neil Elliott, author of A Higher Road: Cleanse Your Consciousness to Transcend The Ego and Ascend Spiritually.

His groundbreaking book outlines how you can achieve your life’s purpose, heal your body and mind, and draw happiness into your life. The unique tools and strategies he offers will help you attain peace, joy, and abundance and discover your true purpose in life. This book brings together scientific discoveries and spiritual concepts and explains the Truth of our Existence in a factual, rational, and engaging way. (https://www.dneilelliott.com/the-book)

We chatted about consciousness, science, purpose and what it means to "ascend" spiritually!

    Key Points From The Book:

    • The Secrets of Existence and Our True Spiritual Origins.

    • New knowledge that bridges the gulf between the Unseen Spiritual Dimension and the Seen World of ‘Matter’ that will enable science to move forward into new realms of spiritual/scientific research for the betterment of humankind.

    • What your tools of creativity are, and how you use them moment by moment to create every tomorrow, every experience, and every circumstance that comes into your life. You cannot escape this process; it is a law of existence.

    • How to ascend in spiritual consciousness, free yourself from the treadmill of life’s ups and downs, and enter an inner state of everlasting peace, joy, love, abundance, and prosperity that is more rewarding than you ever dreamed possible.

    D. Neil believes that as more and more people follow this higher road to true spiritual perfection, a new era of love and peace will dawn for everyone throughout the world.
