The cross takes away the human effort and any amount of works one can do as the hope of their salvation.  Paul has stated his Christology and now moves into the how and why of reconciliation.  There is much grace in this last part of chapter one and it can raise some questions to those not familiar with the Biblical language.  Verse 23 uses the word "if" and the phrase "in the faith" and both are crucial to understanding Paul's statement correctly and not create confusion.  Paul is simply retelling the Gospel to the church again as once received from Epaphras to combat the false teachings coming along.  Know the scriptures and know your place in Christ.  Besides our salvation, understanding the results of Christ's work can change many things.

Pleading the blood has its roots in the Word of Faith movement.  You're faith is a force and with that force, your words activate results in the courtroom of Heaven.  Wait, that doesn't sound biblical.  Because its not!  Pleading the blood has become a superstitious ritualistic way of praying.  Now don't get it wrong here.  There is power in the blood and life is in the blood but what does all that mean according to scripture and how is that applied to us?  You may find out you need a new way to pray.

Because it is the Lenten season.  Forty days of preparation for Easter and remembering the forty days in the wilderness that Jesus spent.  It's not just a Catholic thing, many Christians commit Lent.  So what's the history?  Are we commanded to observe Lent?  Are you more spiritual if you do or you don't?  It's probably no surprise that Marcuss does not commit Lent so don't make him feel bad and he will let you eat your fish.

This section of Colossians is often called The Great Christology because it is Pauls's inspired understanding of the person Jesus and of who He is.  The first half is about creation and the universe, the point being that Chris is preeminent over it because He's the one that made it. Then Paul will shift focus in the second half to the new creation which is the church.  This is rich Christological truth from the image, form, and being of Christ in the use of these words contrasted with that of humanity and to see that everything that is from, through, and in Christ, because He created it all, has it's ultimate goal in Him as well.

In Genesis 1 God creates man and saying, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over..." along with, "fill the earth and subdue it."  For those who understand the biblical narrative thus far, we know Adam disobeyed God's command.  The thing is, though, having dominion was not the command.  Rather, it was to "not eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."  So, overstating the case by saying this dominion mandate is an order or command has huge consequences to the rest of the biblical narrative.  Also, we know Jesus came as "the last Adam" and in doing so fulfilled everything needed as being "the substance."  The question now is, "Who has dominion?"  Is it all Christ's or does He share it with His brethren?  And if so, how?

The apostle Paul greeted the Colossians (1:1-2), gave thanks to God for their faith and love (1:3-8), and then followed with a specific prayer for their growth in the knowledge of God's will (1:9-14). In verses, 9-11 Paul prays for certain blessings for the Colossians, here we read that Paul wants them to continue to grow so he's praying for their spiritual growth.  Then in verses 12-14 he lists things for which he gives thanks.

So we ended last week on three graces that Paul had heard about in the lives of the Colossians which were faith, love, and hope. And as Marcuss said verses 3-8 is one long sentence where verse 3 governs everything else that will be said through verse 8 which is, "We always thank God", and at the core of all of this is the Gospel and the message of Christ.

Well, Marcuss didn't know about Trump's Middle East Peace Policy coming out this week so this is interesting. There are two biblical truths that Christian Zionists don't seem to realize: That because of Israel's disobedience, God is finished with National Israel in the form of the Mosiac Covenant and they don't seem to understand who True Israel is.  Zionism is a political movement built on the belief that the Jewish people deserve by right to possess the land of Palestine as their own. Christian Zionism as a modern theological and political movement embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism, something which seems to be unbiblical.

In Galatians 4 Paul is arguing with those who want to go back to Judaism and take Jesus with them. He is addressing people who want a hybrid religion that is part Jewish and part Christian. The Jews knew that they were the descendants of Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac, but Paul turned their most prized "bragging right" on its head by saying, "No, you are the descendants of Hagar!
