The majority of the Western Church believes in "The Last Days" or "End Times".  As discussed before on this podcast this view is in the Futurist camp and the majority of beliefs stem from Dispensational Premillennialism which is not even quite 200 years old.  In this sermon, Marcuss presents rethinking "The Last Days" according to what the Bible teaches.  Using the principals of interpretation this is an overview of some Old Testament texts concerning "last days", the appearing of Elijah, and the context of Matthew 24 which all seem to be concerned about the nation of Israel, the first-century generation and the end of the Old Covenant Age.

In this episode, Marcuss takes a look at a couple of texts that are often misapplied when it comes to The Holy Spirit.  Such as Paul and the 12 in Acts 19.  Obviously, these men needed a baptism of The Holy Spirit because Paul gave it to them.  Yeah, but let's look at the text in context! These men weren't Christians yet because they did know Jesus so Paul ministers to them!  Bring all that back to some things Jesus did and said and see what is happening in the upper room in its proper context.  These are things that need to be taught better because too many are confused by bad teachings on this subject.  The whole point is wrapped in this, you don't need to be praying and seeking something which has already been given to you!

If we are going to understand the Bible in order to Rethink many things we have been taught, we must have some understanding of Hermeneutics.  These things include seeing the Bible as a whole.  That is, we must know the Old in order to fully understand the New.  In this, we can apply "The Analogy of Faith", which is, scripture interprets scripture.  And probably the most overlooked principle of all, "Audience Relevance".

In this sermon, Marcuss takes a look at one of the most popular and probably most misunderstood parables of Jesus.  The rich man and Lazarus is said to be a literal account of two men by some, while others disagree and insist that it is indeed a parable.  However, the majority agree that it's about the afterlife of man and that it speaks of Heaven and Hell.  Perhaps we should rethink that and keep it within its context.  After all, there is no mention of resurrection and judgment.  Plus, Hades is not Hell, it is the grave.  At best, this is a parable about an intermediate state, which many will say isn't real according to Church tradition.  So what is it about then?  Remember, a text without a context is just a con.

This is part two in rethinking the use of creation in Romans 8.  We have seen the examples used in scripture of the creation of a set apart people of the Old Covenant and now, the saints, of the New Covenant.  Corporately, that generation was groaning and waiting for the redemption of the body.  Which body?  Theirs or the body of Christ, the Church?  Is this something future still or something that happened at the end of the transitional period in 70 AD with the destruction of Jerusalem? This is obviously an eschatological text but is it future to us or was it future to the original audience?  That's what Marcuss explores in this episode.  Was the earth actually cursed or was it, man?  Is creation in Romans 8 the world then or another creation?  Since we know creation and creature can refer to other things such as the creation of Israel and the Old Covenant can this then be what Paul is referring to?  If so, what does it mean for the revealing of the children/sons of God?  Because who needs the revealing of the sons of God if this is referring to a future last day?  Could it be the faithful remnant of Old Covenant children who have trusted in Christ transitioning from the Old to the New?  Could it be we have misunderstood this by not considering its original audience and general context?  More info from Tony Denton at http://asiteforthelord.com

Identity in Christ is important.  If you died to who you once were and born again as a new creation how can you settle for being a "sinner saved by grace"?  The word "saint" is used over 60 times in scripture in reference to Christians.  There's no one who is more "saintly" than the other, even the most obscure believer is as much a saint as the Apostle Paul!  Make no mistake about it, God's word declares you are new, born again, dead to sin, alive in Christ and a saint!

Seriously this is light-hearted but it is truthful.  What do no gimmicks, no agenda mean most of the time?  What kind of people does it attract?  Besides all that what are some things preachers do that they should probably stop doing?  Why do they always want us to repeat after them?  What is this biblical Simeon says?  Is there a reason behind that?  Sometimes, yes, there is.  What about the Holy Spirit interruption in the middle of the sermon they have to announce?  Or the hey did you know...insert catchy buzz convention phrase.  Can I get an amen?!  Somebody help me out!  Do they really need the affirmation that bad?  Why can't we just preach the word and not care about being relevant?

In the last and final teaching of this topic, we look at the promise from God to create a new "heaven and earth".  Isaiah 65 and 66 give us a glimpse at what is going on and we see that this cannot be referring to an eternal state but a period in human history.  And in comparing that with what is described in Revelation 21 and 22, the scene really looks and sounds completely different than that of the futurist position.  Behold, we live in the new heaven and earth now.

Last week we went through several texts that mentioned "heaven and earth" in apocalyptic language referring to nations, mainly Israel.  Ending in 2 Peter 3 and starting there this week, we are encountered with the go-to text on the future demise of the world.  But is that actually the case here?  Peter says to recall and remember the prophets.  What did the often speak on besides the coming Messiah?  In this teaching, we explore the use of "heaven and earth" pertaining to the covenants, the Old and the New.  What was old was becoming obsolete and soon to pass away.  "Heaven and earth" was to pass away as well.  Jesus said this Himself but also that it would happen within His generation.
