This is it, the ending of Matthew 24.  From the destruction of the Temple to the Parousia of Christ, the lives of those early Christians were dependant upon their watchfulness. They were to be watching for their Lord's coming in judgment, the day of the Lord, upon apostate Israel.  They were to always be watching and praying that they would be able to escape the coming judgment of Jerusalem.  And to drive home the need of watchfulness, the Lord gives His disciples a parable to contrast the difference there would be between those who were watching and those who were not.

Every time we read the phrase "heavens and earth" our minds think of the physical literal places we read of in Gen 1:1 and the earth in which we live but that's simply not the case with every instance throughout scripture. This is part one (out of three) of teaching on a small portion of scripture and we are going to look at this more in depth to get a better understanding. The reason is not only for us to get a better understanding of God's word but also because I'm going to make a statement that I believe is true and I need to prove that to you with the scriptures.  And that statement is: I believe we are living in the new heavens and earth.  For those that have heard the other episodes on this topic, this will still be new information.

Working through this section of the Lord's discourse, we find the famous "left behind" text's that many dispensationalists and rapture advocates use for "the end of time".  Simply reading this slowly and thinking one can see that Jesus is simply saying that the day will like it was in the days of Noah.  So ask, what happened back then?  The flood came, removed the wicked and Noah, the righteous, remained.  Noah was left behind!  Along with this are other texts to compare and consider to see that Jesus was not talking about any type of "rapture" in the future nor in the first-century generation.  No, the Olivet Discourse, in its entirety, all points to an event happening within that generation.  The end of the Old Covenant Age.

Quick heads up, verse 35 has not been dealt with since the phrase "heaven and earth" is used and said to pass away.  This is an idiom and Marcuss has dealt with it in two previous episodes and there will be more to come in the "Rethinking" sermons.  

Verse 36 in The Olivet Discourse is said by some to be the dividing line and the escape clause to others.  Without any changing of language or heads up of switching from a localized first-century prophecy to a far off distant end of the world event, people debate that Christ is speaking of two different events.  To others, even if He isn't, He said He didn't even know when so what's the point?  The point is you simply can not divide this section up by chopping it in two.  Marcuss will give the arguments that people give but he will also give the argument that makes sense and by using the Bible, compares scripture with scripture to show how Jesus is talking about one single event in history that has already happened.

The most significant event in human history happened around 30 AD.  Men have tried to say its myth and legend but eyewitness accounts speak otherwise.  Men's lives were changed as well as history and these men gave their lives.  Jesus overcame death and defeated the devil.  His resurrection is the core to Christian faith and today we celebrate and give thanks.

Taking parts one and two of Biblical Resurrection, Marcuss sums things up.  There may be a little repeating here, however, there are a few more details added as well.  In summary, Biblical resurrection seems to be a lot like Biblical death.  That is, the emphasis seems to be way more tied to the spiritual than it is the physical.

This Palm Sunday we take a look at the foundational feast in the Old Testament, The Passover.  The feasts were appointed times for the Israelites that served as rehearsals.  That is, these were types and shadows.  The Passover and its lamb, as the type, pointed to something greater, the anti-type, Jesus our Passover Lamb and Redeemer.

In part one Marcuss took a look at what the main emphasis is on Biblical death and resurrection.  In this episode, He takes a look at when the Bible says the resurrection is to take place.  The books of Daniel, Matthew and Acts speak of this event.  Daniel and Matthew are close to identical in wording when speaking of the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, a historical event we know took place in 70 Ad.  Paul proclaims in Acts that Old Covenant Israel's hope was "the resurrection" and we can see this when we understand the phrases "this age" and "the age to come".  He then states that there was a resurrection that was "about to be" or take place within the First-Century.  Could a future event of physical bodies taken out of the graves be a misunderstanding and something that was to take place spiritually in the First-Century "at the end of the ages"?

All of us have inconsistencies in our theology and that's okay because no one will probably ever have a perfect theology outside of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith.  Few, though, seem a little so out of line that they simply do not make sense and resurrection is one of those.  First off, Marcuss is not speaking about the literal physical resurrection of Christ.  Paul makes it clear that if our Lord has not risen then our faith is in vain (1 Cor 15:14).  Once up for consideration is the physical out of the grave "general resurrection" held by many Futurists that happens at "the last day" along with "the day of judgment".  So to understand Biblical resurrection is to understand actual Biblical death and the emphasis that is throughout the narrative of the entire Bible.  What happened in the garden and what is God doing and trying to restore throughout the course of the First Testament?  Who and what is it pointing to and redeeming for humanity?  Is this spiritual or physical in nature?
