The first true Xmas mix in 20 years! Just like the Halloween 2020, there are holiday specials intertwined between some songs that just match the year's awfulness. Let's hope 2021 is better.
In 1994, due to my new habit of hitting the movies with friends almost every weekend, I had accumulated a bunch of soundtracks so this is my dedication to both. Back when it was a tape, I had a contest for people to figure out which movie the songs came from. Now, it's which of the 11 movies I never saw in a theater. Good luck.
This is a collection of just good songs I listened to during my settling in period. Austin had a great 'Alternative' station called KNNC (K-Nack) and a weird 'Adult Alternative' called KGSR (K-Star). Between them I discovered and maintained great material.
The regular mixes may have come to a halt in the Spring of 1994, but in early 1995, I pulled together all my new acquisitions to make an annual compilation. This initial mix covers the zeitgeist of my life, the world and others at the time. Still holds up 25 years later.
All good things come to an end and here my mixtape streak went into an indefinite hiatus after this one. I don't recall specifically what threw KMAG off track. I'm guessing a mix of less money and other distractions. I hope you enjoyed the Late 1992 to Early 1994 period. Next up will be the return of greatest hit anthologies and when KMAG had a brief resurgence in 1995.
Spring usually arrived early in Austin but now it was officially present, alongside my first SXSW, which I missed. I didn't care, I was enjoying my new adopted home way too much to care. I only wish the CD pool I was working with reflected it on this mix.
It's been 27 years, well, I made one 20 years ago but never distributed it on CD-R. Better late than never alongside all the cool flourishes the Internet, Garage Band, Amadeus II and MP3 Gain Express can add.
The other side of my first Austin-based mix. It includes new treasures I found at Technophilia (RIP), Tower Records (no one misses them), Camelot (RIP) and Half Priced Books (now gouging their used vinyl prices). I was loving this place despite my weird work hours.
The first mixtape in Austin! Just like a US terrestrial radio station, I changed the W to K as per the custom for being West of the Mississippi. A couple tracks on this compilation came from recent finds around the area.
