Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden appeared to walk back his pledge to institute a nationwide mask mandate to fight the coronavirus on Sunday, noting that such federal action goes against the U.S. Constitution.
"Well, I hope you could trust the governors," Biden said when asked about the issue Sunday.
But, he added, "There's a constitutional issue whether federal government could issue such a mandate. I don’t think constitutionally they could, so I wouldn’t issue a mandate."
Still, he said, the federal government should issue national guidelines for the state and local governments to follow, and that he would "plead with" people to wear masks to protect their neighbors from the virus.
A Lincoln, Nebraska, police officer died Monday two weeks after he was shot and critically injured while attempting to arrest an assault suspect.
Inspector Luis “Mario” Herrera was shot Aug. 26 while the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force served a warrant for 17-year-old Felipe Vazquez, who was wanted for second-degree assault in connection with a stabbing death in March, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.
Lancaster Country Sheriff Terry Wagner, whose department is leading the investigation into the shooting, said evidence showed that Vazquez shot Herrera as he and Orion Ross broke out of a window and escaped.
California utility companies helping battle the state's massive wildfires have again been forced to cut power to hundreds of thousands of customers to prevent more blazes.
California’s largest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric, said this weekend that it had no option but to shut off power to as many as 172,000 customers as a precautionary measure.
Pacific Gas & Electric said customers in 22 counties could have their power cut to help reduce the risk of electrical lines and equipment sparking fires with the high winds."If weather forecasts indicate gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, it may be necessary for us to turn off the electricity serving that area. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff," their website says.
