The Kulturecast episodes

  • The Elephant Man
We kick off David Lynch December, our followup to David Lynch January, with one of two biopics from the auteur which also happens to be his second film which also happened to have gotten nominated for eight Oscars: The Elephant Man. Starring John Hurt as the titular character, the film follows the life and times of John Merrick, a man stricken with a horrible physical disfigurement, who meets a doctor who attempts to change his life. It's a sentimental and touching story of compassion and humanity that features only the slightest Lynchian touches. The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris to talk about the film, the real-life Elephant Man, and where the film falls in Lynch's body of work.

  • Doctor Sleep
We take another break from Noirvember to cover a film that attempts to reconcile the differences between the two different versions of The Shining, along with providing a look at the continuing adventures of Danny Torrance: Doctor Sleep. Starring Ewan McGregor as the adult Danny, it follows him attempting to prevent a young girl with her shining ability from being consumed by Rosie the Hat and the evil True Knot gang. It attempts to reconcile the differences between the original book and film, along with telling a coherent, entertaining story, not an easy task. The One Season Show's Jess Byard and The Projection Booth's Mike White join Chris to talk about the film, the book, and the differences between the two.

  • Terminator: Dark Fate
We take a break from Noirvember to cover the latest film in the possibly dead Terminator franchise: Terminator: Dark Fate. This "true sequel" to Judgement Day features returning characters from that film and brand new characters attempting to thwart the uprising of a new robotic enemy. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns along with Linda Hamilton, trying to cash in on the success of recent soft reboots to popular franchises. While the film's first act is superb, it falls apart in the later acts and becomes the usual CGI mess in the film's bombastic finale. Canadian director Matt Campagna joins Chris to talk about the film's controversial opening scene, where the franchise goes from here, and where the film ranks in the canon.

  • Dark Passage
With Horrotober firmly in the rear-view mirror, we turn our sights on the first annual Noirvember, a look at all things film-noir. We kick off this month with a look at one of the four collaborations between acting couple powerhouses Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall: Dark Passage. Based on the book by David Goodis, the film follows Bogart as Vincent Parry, a man wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his wife, who attempts to clear his name with the help of Lauren Bacall. Along with noir tropes, the film also employs a first-person perspective for the first half, cementing itself as a unique entry into the noir genre. OughtFiveFilm's Father Malone joins Chris to talk about Bogart's filmography, the unique filming style, and whether the film is actually "noir."

  • Halloweentown Halloween Special
If you thought Ginger Snaps was going to be it for 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey, think again, because we've got a special Halloween episode for all you boils and ghouls out there talking haunted houses, the holiday itself, and a very special Disney film that's near and dear to the Kulturecast: Halloweentown. Released in 1998 on the Disney Channel, the film follows the Cromwell family as they are drawn back to Halloweentown by their grandmother as they must confront an evil force bent on merging Earth and Halloweentown. Starring Kimberly J. Brown, Debbie Reynolds, and Judith Hoag, it's a wholesome yet entertaining approach to Halloween that has entered the pantheon of memorable films focused on the spooky holiday. Award-winning screamwriter Jess Byard joins Chris in-person to talk about every facet of the Halloween season, the film's representation of family, and their combined love of haunted houses.

  • Ginger Snaps
We've reached the final entry into 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey with a look at a film that's part allegory for puberty and part traditional werewolf story: Ginger Snaps. Starring Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins, it focuses on two sisters who have to cope with the fallout of one of them being attacked by a werewolf. As the older of the two begins to exhibit physical signs of a terrifying transformation, the younger sister attempts to find a way to stop her from fully turning. It's a novel concept that ends up crumbling under the weight of its muddled, prolonged finale. Award-winning screamwriter Jess Byard joins Chris to talk about the film, the puberty allegory, and why werewolf stories tend to be generic.

  • Lost Souls
We are nearing the end of 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey with our penultimate episode on a film that attempts too many things and gets almost none of them right: Lost Souls. Featuring Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin, the film follows Chaplin as an atheist journalist who falls down a rabbit hole of religion and demonry as he attempts to stop himself from becoming the vessel for the Antichrist. It's a meandering attempt to cash in on the Y2K craze of the late '90s along with a boatload of religious hokum. Screenwriter for TV and film Richard Hatem joins Chris for the first time to talk about the Winona Ryder's eyes, the state of horror in 2019, and why the film was a flop.

  • What Lies Beneath
We are at the halfway point of 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey with the only horror movie Harrison Ford ever starred in, which also happens to be directed by Robert Zemeckis: What Lies Beneath. Harrison Ford plays Dr. Norman Spencer, whose wife, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, is being haunted by a seemingly benevolent spirit in their house they are renovating. She later realizes the spirit may be trying to tell her something about her husband and his past, with grave consequences for her future. It's a clunky, overly long take on the horror genre that is barely horror, barely supernatural, and barely entertaining. The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris to talk about the film's screenplay, Harrison Ford's '90s filmography, and the muddled nature of the film.

  • Final Destination
We continue 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey with a film that started its life as a spec script for The X-Files then ends up being directed and written by two of the show's most influential writers, only later to become a horror franchise: Final Destination. The movie follows Devon Sawa as Alex Browning, a teenager who, alongside his classmates, narrowly avoids an airline disaster due to his premonition of the accident. One by one, they are then picked off by a vengeful Death who makes one thing clear throughout the film and the entire series: you can never truly cheat death. While not the best entry into the series, it's a compelling idea and worthy opening for the franchise. OughtFive Film's Father Malone joins Chris to talk about the film's tv roots, the acting powerhouse that is Devon Sawa, and the franchise's later entries.

  • Joker
We take a break from 2001: A Horrotober Odyssey to take a look at a film that is in the running for the most controversial film of 2019: Joker. The film follows Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a mentally disturbed man whose life is falling apart around him. Unable to make a name for himself in the world of clowns for hire, Arthur slips farther and farther into insanity, possibly becoming the famous clown prince of Gotham in the process. Similar to other DC Comics films, it's a meandering, unnecessary slog that has nothing important to say on the myriad of issues it attempts to confront. The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris to talk about the film, Mike's storied past with director Todd Phillips, and the laziness of the film's ending.
