From 2 Samuel 2 through the events surrounding the death of Saul, Jonathan, Abner, and Ish-bosheth, we see a man moving from shepherd, to warrior, to exile, to king. David’s journey reminds us that God’s destiny is often reached through a long and difficult process, not by shortcuts. Again and again, David chooses to honor God, respect what God has established, and remain faithful even when those around him do not.

There is a powerful lesson here for anyone waiting on God: when you cannot yet do anything to advance your ultimate calling, do what God has placed in front of you and do it with excellence. Encourage yourself in the Lord, follow the plan, take the next step, remain true to your values, and let God make the way forward. “Wait, I say, on the Lord” is not passive resignation—it is faith that trusts God’s timing. David’s story ultimately brings us to the 23rd Psalm, where the warrior king speaks from the heart of a shepherd: “The Lord is my shepherd.” The same God who led David through the valley was faithful to lead him into his destiny, and He is still faithful to lead us today.

No matter what suffering, uncertainty, persecution, or hardship we face, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ remains with His people. We have received the message: Jesus is Lord, His victory is certain, and His grace will sustain us to the very end.
