Navigating the high seas the coronavirus, the USS Roosevelt. As the United States and the world continue to battle the coronavirus leaders are faced with difficult decisions none more difficult than “doing things right” or  “doing the right thing”.  Capt. Brett Crozier face that dilemma as commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt when he warned about the coronavirus spreading on board the aircraft carrier and urged action to save his sailors. Capt. Brett Crozier’s action can provide us a valuable lesson on what it truly means to be a leader.

Leadership under crisis; the coronavirus. There is no greater test of your leadership skills than leadership under a major crisis. If you were a good leader before a crisis, a crisis  will make you and make you a great leader. But, if you were a mediocre leader before a crisis, a crisis will amplify your weaknesses, produce additional stress and place lives in jeopardy. The coronavirus is a test that you must pass.

Content or resent factors to getting hired after retiring. According to the department of labor statistics over 10,000 people retire each day of which 40% return back to the workforce. Employers sometimes hesitate in employing people who retire for a number of reasons, first of which is the obvious age. Age discrimination is the primary reason that many retirees do not get hired, lack of usable skills is another factor in getting hired. But by far the main reason that people don’t get hired after retiring is the attitude of content or resent. In this episode, we will discuss that an attitude of resenting will keep you from getting a job after retiring.

You’re Killing the job is the attitude or perspective of someone or a group of people that someone or you are not working at the same pace as other less productive workers. When someone new on the job can outperform other employees that have been working for the business or organization for years employee conflicts can occur. Some employees feel that if they slow down production or not perform to standards it provides job security when that opposite is true.  Job security comes from adding value to your work and provide excellent customer service. Never allow someone to bring you down and give less than your best effort at work.

Ageism, Age Discrimination.  Ageism the strategy and tactics of discrimination of people over the age of forty. Today over 35% of our population is over the age of 40. More and more people over the age of 40 are finding it more difficult to find jobs or get a promotion within their workplace due to their age. The EEOC in the past few years received over 230,000 complaints of age discrimination but chose to only take 1% of the complaints to court. Courts today have demonstrated a lack of support for workers over the age of forty and side with businesses and organizations to dismiss older employees.  What can you do to fight age discrimination?
