The Level Up English Podcast

Today, I decided to do a more casual and relaxed episode since I'm still a bit ill at the time of recording. I discuss my own experiences of the USA and some of the culture shocks I had during my 3-week trip there.

I discuss these differences from my own point of view and how this is reflected in the language too.

I should say, I feel like I sounded a bit negative towards America. If that's the case, it was not intended! I love the US and the American people.

As you might know, English isn't like how we find it in textbooks. In day-to-day conversations, we often don't speak in full sentences, and so much of what we say is implied (this means, it's hinted at without actually saying it).

In this episode, I look at some examples of implied meaning or 'language ambiguity' and teach some phrases you can use in different situations.

I spoke about 14 TV shows to improve your British English in episode 22 of the podcast.

Since then, I've got a lot of requests to make a Part 2. To be honest, I don't watch much TV so I struggle to make a good list. Of the TV series I do watch, many of them aren't good examples of British English (or even English in general, such as 'Vikings'!)

My general advice is, rather than watching something that will improve your English, just watch something that you enjoy. Enjoyment should always come first.

A listener requested I respond to an IELTS Writing Part 2 question in an episode, but rather than answer the question in the exam style, I'm allowed to ramble on in my usual way and discuss both sides of the question.

The idea here is that it might help you become clear on how you can answer similar questions for yourself.
