  • Is There Any Quick Marketing?

In this week’s podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula are discussing about the misconceptions surrounding marketing. The main one we hear in the horticultural industry is that marketing is always time consuming… but is it?

Lead Magnets - are something that your ideal client would find interesting, for example:

    • eBook
    • Video Tutorial
    • Download
    • Brochure
    • It may take a while to create and set up a page on your website but once it is set up, it’s there for your client to download etc, make sure this something that will appeal to them and offer them value in that freebie. Following this you need to have an automated email series to ask them how they found the download, if they have any questions to hit reply etc.

TIP: Your brochure or eBook etc, can’t be a replica of your website.

Call to Actions - telling your client what to do when they have looked at your website etc, for example:

      1. Call us today…

      2. Email us for…

    • Why You Should Start An Online Shop

In this week’s podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula are talking about why they started an online shop, what the benefits are and how you can start an online shop.

As well as the membership and done for you services, TLC has an online shop where you can purchase planners, through to social captions and masterclasses.

Why did TLC start an online shop?

      1. There are certain items which can’t be sold through a membership or done for you services.
      2. We can continue to help the community further so you don’t have to be a member to purchase.
      3. When creating Expert Social they realised it was better to offer bundles of months to purchase rather then a membership. (Expert Social episode - https://anchor.fm/the-landscapers-circle/episodes/The-problem-with-Expert-Social-e139too)
      4. Affiliate Links:

It’s like a refer a friend offer. Usually when a customer uses your affiliate link, they will for example get 10% off and you may get 10% kick back because you have recommended them.

      5. How Business Networking Changed Everything

In this week's podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula will be discussing business networking - whether that’s via in person events or social media, and how it changes everything in your business.

You can meet so many different contacts in a variety of ways from messaging them on social or even meeting them outside the industry in public spaces.

Before having children, Paula use to meet up with a network group at 6am in the morning and in the past week, she has had 3 different people get in contact to price a job. One of them who remembered her from when Paula did a presentation 8 years ago at an event.

        It’s about building those relationships

For example when you connect with someone on LinkedIn, DO NOT send a salesy message as they will most likely not reply. Instead, engage with their posts. Then when you want to get in touch with them, send them a message to book in a Zoom call or meet in your local coffee shop.

      6. How To Overcome The Designer/Landscaper Life Cycle

In this week’s podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula will be discussing about what the designer and landscaper life cycle is and how you can overcome it in your business.

What do we mean by designer and landscaper life cycle?

This is an annual thing where the busy period is in the Summer and the quieter period in the Winter. it often comes with overwhelm, stress and being busy - just in different ways.

What can you do about this?

Having a website to see your contact details and where they can sign up to freebies or a newsletters to provide their email address so you can contact them back.

        Freebies, Newsletter, Brochures:

Something the customer will find informative and helpful to fill out their contact details because that way you can follow them up or have an automated email sequence to do it automatically.

        Using Google ads

In Paula’s design and landscaping business, they switch on Google Ads in September October time in the quieter period.

TOP TOP: Having an enquiry log to see where your enquiries are coming from

      7. No Work For The School Holidays (nearly!)

In this week’s podcast episode, Paula is discussing the trials and tribulations of working through the Summer holidays whilst looking after her children.

Tips on how to work in the summer holidays:

        1. Childcare - Paula has both sides of grandparents looking after the kids 1 day a week.
        2. Automations - For example, having a phone answering service that will answer the phone and text you who the caller was with their contact details.
        3. Don’t be too hard on yourself - your business won’t fall into pieces if you don’t work for a day, spend your time with the kids.
        4. Getting yourself organised - delegating tasks that need doing.
        5. Paula mentions a podcast she listened to that said whatever it may be, what is one thing that will make you feel you’re 1% better today.

        6. The Fear That No One Will Buy

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte and Paula are discussing the fear that no one will buy and what to do when you feel like this.

What do we mean by the ‘fear that no one will buy’?

That no one will be interested in your new product or service. For example, with TLC it’s the fear no one will become a member during enrolment or become a done for you client. In your design or landscaping business you may feel this when you go into the winter season, feeling like you have to be competitive in the price to get the job.

How to deal with this feeling

Remind yourself with what you have already achieved. For example, writing down everything you have achieved in your personal and work life. Reflecting on where you have come will drive you to where you’re going. ALSO it doesn’t matter if you do not have any sales at the beginning as it is all about trial and error with different strategies. Click here for more about this in the Expert Social episode.

TIP: Create client avatars to resonate with your audience in marketing etc.

        7. RANT: Misinformation About Social Media

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte is having a rant about misinformation surrounding social media and tips to use for your social media profiles.

          What does misinformation mean?

Everyone has their own opinions with social media, should it be more professional or personable? Those types of things are completely up to you however if you googled how Instagram works or analytics work, this can be false information.

Charlotte has seen an article talking about not looking at social media analytics, however she strongly disagrees with this. You don’t need to be looking at analytics every day, but a monthly report is really important to look at engagements. If no one is engaging with certain posts, then you would know what posts to create more often. For example, on the TLC Instagram when a picture of Charlotte or Paula is in a social graphic these posts typically seem to have more engagements.

Your time is money. If you’re working on social media, you're not working on something else. Looking at website clicks and seeing how many are becoming an enquiry or asking for more information is a great way to see if your efforts are paying off.

Would you rather have a 1000 followers and 10 people enquire, or 10,000 followers and 1 person enquire? Make sure your followers are the right people.

Tip: Create a monthly report for your social media, this will help you to see what posts did really well.

        8. Using LinkedIn Effectively With James Potter

In this week’s podcast episode Paula is joined by James Potter, The LinkedIn Man, talking about everything on LinkedIn.

          What does James Potter do?

James helps people on LinkedIn look more like themselves and to use LinkedIn for its purpose.

‘If you use a spade when you should use a fork, you're not gonna get the same result’ - this is the same with LinkedIn.

Should landscapers and garden designers be on LinkedIn?

Think of LinkedIn as a big room of business people, sharing pictures and posting regularly will keep your business in front of the minds of other people. There are in fact 194,000 people who talk about gardening on their profiles.

          Tips for using LinkedIn:

          1. ‘Be like you are’ - think about why people work with you, it’s not going to be because of the professional logo on the van. It’ll be you, your approach to your customers. When you’re writing your about section on LinkedIn, this is the part about YOU, not about the work side which is for the experience section.
          2. Don’t worry too much about what time you post, just talk to people like you would in a room full of business people. For example, if you’re looking forward to quoting up a garden tomorrow then just say it.
          3. Should you use hashtags on LinkedIn? Yes, just read over your caption and a word that seems important just put a hashtag in front of it; these will also go bold.
          4. What should you use direct messages for?

Think again about being in a room full of business people, would you say ‘it’s lovely to meet you, would you like to buy a garden design?’ You wouldn’t, so that’s exactly the same as messages on LinkedIn.

Should you pay to upgrade your account on LinkedIn?

The biggest value you will get is seeing who has viewed your profile but if you would do something about it like contacting them it’s probably worth upgrading. Only 9% have the upgraded version so you do not need to upgrade for the best results.

          5. The Problem With Expert Social

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte and Paula will be talking about how they’ve changed Expert Social, why they’ve changed it and how you can apply it to your own business.

Expert Social was a membership where you could access customisable captions, customisable images and customisable story templates every month. Expert Social was launched in March, however Charlotte noticed that people loved the content but didn’t want another subscription.

So Charlotte came up with the idea to reframe them as bundles to purchase on the TLC website.

Would it look like a failure? NO! It’s the fear of I have committed to do it so I have to stick with it. However this decision was not only better for Charlotte, it is better for members as they did not want the hassle of another membership.

In Paula’s Landscaping Business in 2016 they made the decision to stop installing artificial grass. They had 2 separate teams installing, made a lead page for this and ran this separately alongside the landscaping business. However in 2016 they realised they was not making any money in this venture and loads of issues with installation so decided to close this side of the business.

The way you can apply this to your business is to bite the bullet, this is your sign too refine back and focus on what your passionate about!

          6. We Don’t Have Any Competitors

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte and Paula will be talking about competition, what is competition, how you can define it and what to do with your competitors.

            What is competition?

Traditionally in the landscaping industry, competitors are anyone local to you. However they may offer different services or use different type of materials. There are lots of different ways to differentiate to who your competitors are. One of the things you can do is find out who you are quoting against. Another thing to look at is pricing.

There is a BIG difference between competitor analysis and comparing yourself. For example, worrying whether competitors will see what you’re doing and either copy or judge you. But try to remember, you are not running your business for them! Who cares if they try to copy you, they could not do it to your exacting standards.
