In today’s podcast episode Paula will be answering a question sent in by one of our lovely listeners, whilst on a dog walk with her adorable pup Dizzee! 

Dan’s question is ‘if a landscaper has created a quote, sent it out to the client and then the client's accepted it, however, the landscaper has realized they've misquoted. Would you ask the client for more money and increase the quote, or would you risk losing the job?’

Here’s a few things you need to think about:

1. Is it an ideal project/client you want to work with?
2. Are you going to make a big loss or is it just going to dent your profits?
3. Is it just going to dent your profits slightly, but it's a job that you want?

You have 3 options:

1. If it's a large loss, then I would definitely consider walking away from the job and just explaining to the client that you have misquoted, and say unfortunately, I can't take on the job at that price.
2. Just doing the job and maybe you could go down the route of explaining to the client that you misquoted. It's really under budget for what they having, however, it's your mistake so you are happy to take on that cost yourself.
3. Go back to the client and yes, you may risk losing the job, but if it's a job that, you're not really that keen to do, it's not your ideal client or ideal project that may be, this is the route to take. So how, what I might do is explain to the client that you've misquoted. I probably wouldn't recommend this approach, I'd go for approach one or two this is probably the most difficult one to take because obviously it can put a bad taste in the potential clients’ mouth as well.

So what I'm (Paula) talking about is the issue of charging for site visits. Now I say issue , generally it's clients that might have an issue with paying for site visits, and sometimes it's the landscaper or business owner that is too scared to charge for site visits, because they're concerned that they might not get the clients in, their enquiries might dry up.

You need to start charging for your time. And the reason I say this is the more we all charge for our time and the more we charge for our site visits and the quotations that we do for our clients, the more they'll see it as the norm.

And the more likely they are to then pay and see our value. See, that's the most important thing by charging for our time, we are telling them that we are valuable, that our expertise is valuable, that the experience they are paying for has got a value attached to it.

As we are heading towards the Summer months, inquiries for most people are sky high but how do you avoid timewasters? It starts with who are you attracting to your website etc. Secondly, if you charge for consultations like Paula does, and the potential client does not want to pay, then you know they are not your ideal client therefore you are not wasting your time.

Theming your days

A way to help productivity is for example to do all designs on one day, focus on cash flow another day, social content on another day. You may also find splitting your days into AM and PM tasks to help with your motivation.

1. Taking Photos Of Landscaping Projects - Having a broom or any debris from the project left in the photo, make sure the area is clean and clear.

3. When garden designers do not post their garden designs - We know you don’t want your designs stolen so you can put a watermark over the top, this will show your customers what you can do.

4. When people don’t post pictures of themselves - To find out a bit about you and see the person behind the business.

5. When you comment on someone’s Instagram post and they don’t reply - Just take 5 mins to go onto your profile and reply back to any comments maybe even ask them questions, it’s key to building your relationships.

6. When people go on about how many followers they have - Slow growth and more enquires are better because you are getting more enquiries to your business, stay authentic to yourself, be consistent, and showcase yourself.
