  • Is This Your Ticket To Clients?

In this week’s podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula are talking about experiences they’ve had when signing up for freebies, also known as lead magnets, what they've learnt from them and what you can take away too.

Over the years, Charlotte and Paula have filled out hundreds of forms for freebies either for inspiration or to use.

A lead magnet is giving the customer a brochure, PDF, tutorial or anything else (incentive/freebie) in return for filling out their email address or contact details so you can add them to your email list.

In Paula’s design and landscaping business, she sends out one email a month to keep the contacts (including customers!) on her email list in the loop.

TOP TIP: Any piece of marketing you do it’s not a sales tool, this is to get them to call you or email you for information.

  • Behind The Scenes Of Planning Our Business

In this week’s podcast episode, Charlotte and Paula are giving you the behind the scenes of TLC, Aura Landscapes and how they've decided on their future plans.

Charlotte, Paula and Mike were feeling like their businesses weren’t moving forward in a unified front, so they organised a meeting to set out plans for the future.

Here’s how you can have an effective planning meeting:

    1. Start with your big visions between 5-10 years focusing around the business but also personal goals.
    2. Then brainstorm where you want the business to be by the end of 2021, 2022 - 2025 and 2025+.
    3. Finally, write down this year’s milestones and deadlines for different tasks. For example, Paula needs to order new uniforms by the end of this month.
    4. Having these meetings with your teams every month or three months will help with your path of where your business is going.

    5. I Feel Like Shit

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte is talking about how she feels like shit and what to do to make a change if you feel like this too.

You may be feeling run down, headachy and over tired but feeling like it is not ‘bad’ enough to take the day off work. Let’s change that!

Batch working is a good way to release stress, with an increase in productivity.  For example, Charlotte completed seven marketing reports for clients on Tuesday - allocating all day.

      1. If you’re working too much - check out last week’s podcast episode on self care tips and having time to enjoy yourself separate from work (link below).
      2. If you’re too busy with work and busy having late nights seeing friends and family then set time to have self care days and relax.

      4. Practical Self Care Tips For Business Owners

In this week’s podcast episode Charlotte and Paula are talking about the busy period and making sure you’re taking care of yourself.

Do you feel like you’re in a tunnel where if you keep going, you will get to a magical place and you won’t have as much work to do? Unfortunately, you will never reach that place! Staying in these tunnels can have a negative impact on your business and your health, so we’re giving you all the tips on self-care:

TIP 1: Schedule self-care, whether that is watching your favourite film or going to the gym.

TIP 2: Schedule yourself work hours, for example, if you have children stop working when they get home.

TIP 3: Switching off the work side on your phone for example past 6 pm you don’t answer work calls and wait until the next day to call them back. Also maybe even having 2 phones, 1 for work and 1 for personal things to have that separation from work life.

TIP 4: Plan your days even if it just the night before or on a weekly basis.

      5. Facing Imposter Syndrome

In today’s podcast episode Charlotte and Paula will be giving you tips on imposter syndrome and talking about it. For example, feeling like you are being judged for everything you do like posting on social media or in Facebook groups.

        Tips for overcoming imposter syndrome:

        1. Unfollow anyone on social media who makes you doubt yourself. There is a difference between feeling inspired and competitor analysis vs comparing yourself.
        2. Writing down everything you have achieved in your business, personal life, travel, anything you have achieved.
        3. Surround yourself with positive people that support you.
        4. Remember that everyone is human, no one is better than anyone just because they have success in their business.
        5. Speak to some of your previous clients, ask them what made them choose YOU.

        6. Is Now A Good Time For Extra Staff?

In today’s podcast episode Paula and Charlotte are talking about extra staff and what options you have.

          Your options:

          • Employees
          • Apprentice
          • Sub Contractor
          • Hiring a virtual assistant
          • TLC done for you services/Outsourcing

During this time period the industry is super busy, so it is whether you can sustain to afford when maybe later on in the year it won’t be as busy. There are many areas you need to think about before having extra staff.

Try forward planning so before the busy periods you have a couple sub contractors come in for a few months at a time or you outsource the admin during that period.

For 10 minutes write down everything you do for your business and access what you would like to outsource, employ someone else to do etc. For example, do you need someone who can post on social for you or an admin assistant who is going to do your invoicing? You also need to look at your cashflow, inputting the numbers you are expecting to spend.

          Employees vs Sub Contractors

Employees you have more control over what they do and sub contractors you can get in for certain projects, but a downside is they are working for themselves, they can have time off when they want to.

Apprentices is another option as you can train them to the quality you want to be, they won’t have any bad habits as they haven’t worked in this industry before.

        7. Women In Landscaping, Rewilding & More

In today’s podcast episode Paula is joined by Charlotte Howard, also known as Capability Charlotte, who will be talking all things landscaping.

Charlotte is a garden designer and horticultural consultant, who has grown up with her parents being in creative industries, it has always been in her blood.

          Follow Charlotte on Instagram @capabilitycharlotte

Why does Charlotte vote no for artificial grass?

          1. Doesn’t look like real grass
          2. You can employ a gardener for 5 years for the same price
          3. Environmental Impact
          4. High maintenance

What could Landscapers do to reduce the environmental impact of hard landscaping?

          • Using locally sourced stone
          • Reduce the size of a patio
          • Sustainable drainage

Top 3 thingsfor success in the industry:

          1. Well organised
          2. Commination
          3. Keep learning

        8. Misquoting Projects, What Do You Do After?

In today’s podcast episode Paula will be answering a question sent in by one of our lovely listeners, whilst on a dog walk with her adorable pup Dizzee!

Dan’s question is ‘if a landscaper has created a quote, sent it out to the client and then the client's accepted it, however, the landscaper has realized they've misquoted. Would you ask the client for more money and increase the quote, or would you risk losing the job?’

Here’s a few things you need to think about:

          1. Is it an ideal project/client you want to work with?
          2. Are you going to make a big loss or is it just going to dent your profits?
          3. Is it just going to dent your profits slightly, but it's a job that you want?

          You have 3 options:

          1. If it's a large loss, then I would definitely consider walking away from the job and just explaining to the client that you have misquoted, and say unfortunately, I can't take on the job at that price.
          2. Just doing the job and maybe you could go down the route of explaining to the client that you misquoted. It's really under budget for what they having, however, it's your mistake so you are happy to take on that cost yourself.
          3. Go back to the client and yes, you may risk losing the job, but if it's a job that, you're not really that keen to do, it's not your ideal client or ideal project that may be, this is the route to take. So how, what I might do is explain to the client that you've misquoted. I probably wouldn't recommend this approach, I'd go for approach one or two this is probably the most difficult one to take because obviously it can put a bad taste in the potential clients’ mouth as well.

        9. RANT: Free Site Visits

So what I'm (Paula) talking about is the issue of charging for site visits. Now I say issue , generally it's clients that might have an issue with paying for site visits, and sometimes it's the landscaper or business owner that is too scared to charge for site visits, because they're concerned that they might not get the clients in, their enquiries might dry up.

You need to start charging for your time. And the reason I say this is the more we all charge for our time and the more we charge for our site visits and the quotations that we do for our clients, the more they'll see it as the norm.

And the more likely they are to then pay and see our value. See, that's the most important thing by charging for our time, we are telling them that we are valuable, that our expertise is valuable, that the experience they are paying for has got a value attached to it.

        10. Fear & Your Business, Making A Change

In today’s podcast episode Charlotte will be talking about fear in your business and fear in life especially during these uncertain times of covid.

Fear is a natural human emotion which you shouldn't try to block out.

What to do when you are presented with fear?

          • Let yourself feel the emotion, do not try to ignore it because this will come back at you in a couple of hours or days worse causing you to feel stressed.
