This week we spoke with Fred Dust, the author of Making Conversation: Seven Essential Elements of Meaningful Communication. This conversation got us laughing out loud as we realized how well our mission aligns with his. Together we speculate causes of the loneliness epidemic and discuss the neurological impacts of technology on our day-to-day interactions. Fred gives tips on how to turn active listening into creative and joyful listening and teaches us that the tough conversations around divisive topics (such as politics or racial justice) can actually be the most spectacular.
About Fred:
Fred Dust was a Senior Partner and Global Managing Director at international design firm IDEO. A leading voice and practitioner of human-centered design and networked innovation, he helps organizations in media, finance, retail, and health confront disruption stemming from shifts in consumer behavior, social trends, economic pressures, and new technology. Prior to IDEO, Dust worked as an architect and spent eight years working with independent artists and major art organizations. He chairs the board of Parsons and sits on the board of the New School, NPR, and the Sundance Institute. He has written for Fast Company and has been interviewed by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CBS Sunday Morning and New York’s NPR affiliate WNYC. He lives in New York City.

We had the pleasure of interviewing an insightful and relatable guest who calls herself “The Millennial Therapist,” Tess Brigham, LMFT, BCC. As millennials themselves, Molly and Tricia were able to ask Tess questions about personal struggles they’ve been facing both during and pre-COVID. Tess, Molly, and Tricia also hypothesize about what the world will look like socially post-COVID. Tess gives tips on how to communicate with those who are living with a mental health diagnosis and answers a listener question about toxic friendships and setting boundaries.
About Tess:
Tess Brigham (LMFT, BCC) is a Licensed Psychotherapist and Board-Certified Coach and specializes in helping Millennials discover their unique life path so they can go out into the world and make an impact. Curiosity is...well, curious. We may know the concept, but few of us take time to think about how to cultivate an attitude of curiosity in our daily lives. Today’s guest, Robin, believes we can’t foster a sense of connection and trust if we don’t appear curious about one another.
In this episode, we cover topics including the role of curiosity in romantic partnerships, work relationships, and friendships, specific language to use to help foster a curious demeanor, and how to be assertive rather than aggressive. In our current climate, curiosity can be a powerful antidote to bridge feelings of division or misunderstanding.
Robin Barone is the founder of Diplomat Books and “Curiosity Conversations”, a newsletter and workshop designed to create better outcomes for the employee experience to increase innovation, employee engagement & retention, and overall productivity through increasing the amount of curiosity in company culture. She is passionate about teaching curiosity to improve the employee experience.
Curiosity is a life skill that can be nurtured and strengthened with knowledge and practice like a muscle. Increasing the level of curiosity in professional communications will lead to strong relationships built on trust, resiliency, and innovation. Strong relationships lead to increased collaboration and productivity of teams.

According to the CDC in March, approximately 1 in 54 children have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder. With autism being such a prevalent diagnosis in our society, it is important for neurotypical people (those not diagnosed with a neurological disorder) to learn about autism and the autistic community. As our guest on the episode, Rachel Dorsey, says, “Autism cannot be cured. Autism is not bad, nor is it good—it just is. It is a different neurology and a different way of being human.”
In this episode, Molly, Tricia, and Rachel discuss Rachel’s personal experience being autistic, ways neurotypical people can communicate with those with autism, and the mental health complications caused when autistic people “mask.”
Rachel Dorsey, MS, CCC-SLP is a late-diagnosed autistic speech-language pathologist who has worked in early intervention, preschool, and clinic-based settings. She is currently working in a private practice located in the greater Boston area and runs a consultancy, Rachel Dorsey: Autistic SLP, aimed at educating professionals about autism-friendly practices and coaching parents of autistic children. Her specialized interests include autism research, education, and advocacy, makeup styles and techniques, Sailor Moon, and cats.
