The Lost Drive-In

The Omen is a film that exists in a time of transition for the horror genre, and while it’s not exactly scary, it does get you thinking about the larger conspiratorial cult that has infiltrated the Church and is attempting to bring about the Antichrist. The film doesn’t spend much time forcing the viewer to watch a crazy child hellbent on murder, but instead forces us to contend with the strange occurrences that transpire because of Damien. Suicidal nannies, Satanic nannies, supernatural photographs, scary dogs, and creepy priests. It’s a great discussion, and we’re happy to report that Father Spiletto, despite being a former cultist, has all his needs taken care of now that he has a withered arm and a goopy eye.

The Howling captures the most interesting parts of werewolf mythology: the tension between the savage and the sophisticated, and whether embracing either is desirable—or even good. It asks compelling questions about the nature of man and beast while sinking its claws into the ’70s-era “look inward” self-help guru mentality. The script is tight, the effects are fantastic, and the acting is solid. A few things about the Colony (or, as we call it, Werewolf Summer Camp) don’t quite add up, but otherwise, the film checks all the boxes to deliver a genre staple and one of the best werewolf films to date.

Halloween 4 is not going to win any awards, but it has a lot more going for it than you may think. Is Loomis's egg-faced make-up bad? Yes. Is the ending with Jamie and the scissors a bit off? Again, yes. Is Myer's mask terrible? Most certainly, yes! However, this film invoked atmosphere, is directed well, and is excellent at continuing (and returning) Michael Myers to the franchise! Grab something warm to drink, throw it on, and enjoy the ride! This podcast episode - if I may be so bold - was an incredibly fun and hilarious discussion by Dean, Scott, and Brian.

10 Cloverfield Lane starts off with an excellent lesson in visual storytelling. We can piece together what is happening with minimal dialogue. The ability to dial up the tension while keeping the audience guessing gives us an excellent window into what our main character, Michelle, may be thinking without her needing to spew it out with bad dialogue. The tipping point, and the moment that could stretch credulity, is when Emmett and Michelle realize the truth about Howard, and the major reveal at the end has divided audiences since it's release. Vampirism transcends human notions of gender, sexuality, and regular human needs. When you become a vampire, you become nothing. Night Flier is tucked into a collection of short stories from Stephen King in a book titled Nightmares & Dreamscapes. This film took those 30 (or so) pages and delivered an atmospheric film that is stuffed with ambiance and offers a unique spin on the vampire genre. The film asks us to imagine a world in which a vampire flies a private plane from airstrip to airstrip chalking up victims along the way. Hot on his trail is Richard Dees an unscrupulous reporter for the Inside View who lusts for the story as much as the vampire lusts for blood. How will their eventual showdown conclude?

Europa Report accomplishes a lot with a small budget for space traveling science fiction storytelling. The decision to shoot the film out of sequnece and to use the found footage style was an excellent way to lean into the realistic aspect of the film while also trimming the budget. The question discussed; does the movie do enough to keep the film compelling?
