It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Elon’s 6-digit spending spree for Trump, Pete Hegseth’s nomination, US healthcare, Trump’s expanding cabinet of billionaires, the blocked release of the Gaetz ethics report, job growth leading into Trump 2.0, Russia’s use of civilians for target practice, stalling Tesla sales, Israel’s most recent slaughtering of a humanitarian zone, and affirmative action in the US, before expanding on the coverage around the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO. Jeet Heer then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into the topic of Trump’s anti-establishment appeal, unpacking how his cabal of criminals – albeit largely wealthy and establishment-friendly ones – can capitalize on overwhelming disillusionment toward and rejection of US political institutions by at least providing SOME cathartic bucking of the system. Expanding on this, they parse through the particular role of the Democratic Party and its leadership, presenting Trump as an aberration from the deeply unpopular norms and establishment that guide US politics, while reiterating and centering their commitment to said establishment and norms, wrapping up with how these issues were drastically exacerbated by Joe Biden’s decision to run for reelection.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the attempt to spin Pete Hegseth as the “new” Donald Trump, tackle the gerontocratic decline of the Democratic Party, and watch Bill Clinton shame Palestinians for not happily embracing Israeli expansion. Then, she speaks with Giorgio Cafiero, CEO of Gulf State Analytics & adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University, to discuss the recent developments in Syria after rebel forces entered Aleppo. First, Emma runs through updates on the search for the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killer, SCOTUS’ oral arguments on Tennessee’s ban on trans care for minors, Memphis Police discrimination, Trump’s elite-led cabinet, questions about Tulsi Gabbard’s loyalties, Pete Hegseth’s myriad embarrassments, Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Trump’s legal woes, and the future of Democratic leadership, before parsing a little deeper through yesterday’s oral arguments for US v. Skrmetti in front of the Supreme Court, and the fear that they might uphold Tennessee’s violently transphobic policy. John Carl Baker then joins, diving right into a step-by-step breakdown of how South Korean President Yoon’s attempt (and failure) to declare and enforce martial law last Tuesday developed, beginning with his declaration and assembling of soldiers and police around the National Assembly, through the rampant protests to allow legislatures to enter the assembly to vote down Yoon’s attempted coup, and to the overwhelming 190-0 (in an assembly of 300) veto of the President’s martial law. After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea’s conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan’s brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon’s regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon’s regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran’s involvement in Hezbollah’s conflict with Israel and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests. Cafiero expands on the precarious state of the Syrian state at this moment, looking both at what that means for a potential (however brief) lull in conflict and for the future of the Syrian government, before wrapping up with the ongoing role of Israeli relations in shaping Middle Eastern politics.

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox, to discuss some of the oral arguments going on in front of the Supreme Court this week. First, Sam runs through updates on South Korean President’s declaration of martial law, Israel’s myriad violations of their ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, the continued gutting of the IRS, US military domestic operations, Scott Walker’s Act 10, the nomination of Kash Patel, Trump’s plurality win, Dinesh D’Souza’s apologies, Trump’s threat to Gaza, US military aid to Ukraine, and Elon’s legal problems, also touching on Democratic Establishment’s staunch opposition to getting money out of primaries. Ian Millhiser then joins, diving right into the impending oral arguments on United States v. Skrmetti, marking the first full hearing on the constitutional question of the government’s ability to restrict the rights of (and explicitly target) transgender people (a term first used at the Supreme Court in 2010), outlining the case’s origin in the extensive red-state backlash to trans rights under the Biden Administration, with myriad prohibitions and restrictions placed on gender-affirming care for people under 18. After stepping back to tackle Skrmetti’s connection to Bostock v Clayton County (2020) and the Court’s decision (held by Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Gorsuch) that any discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation constitutes, no matter what, a form of sex discrimination, Millhiser and Sam parse through the various problems that still face the prosecution, including the extension of this question beyond the workplace, and the added context of exceptions for presumptively unconstitutional governmental actions, whether the Court is likely to get fully on-board with the defense’s conspiracy-centered argument about “trans ideology,” and what a more limited (though still devastating) decision in favor of the State’s right to discriminate against trans people could look like. Next, Ian looks to the FDA v. R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co, a case centered on the FDA’s ability to regulate tobacco and tobacco products, first walking through the history of the FDA’s right to regulate tobacco products, and their initial (and very late) attempts to reign in the ever-growing vaping industry beginning in 2016, before wrapping up by expanding on the role of the Chevron doctrine - the deference of the Courts to federal agencies when it comes to reading the ambiguity of federal legislation – in problematizing what should be an open-and-shut case for the Conservative majority. And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through the stream of denunciations from the past life of Trump’s new Defense Secretary nomination Pete Hegseth, including statements from a former non-profit he worked at, and his mother. Gary from North Carolina unpacks the “landslide” and “mandate” narratives about Trump’s victory, a Texas A&M student asks about assessing DEI and fairness, and the Heritage Foundation provides a detailed example of how the right-wing uses the language of economic populism to further entrench the power of capital. Bill Maher gets schooled by Jane Fonda over the “threat” of the far-left, Muhammad from Ohio tackles the role US foreign policy has played in shaping the Arab vote in Presidential elections, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Beck, senior writer at n + 1 Magazine, to discuss his recent book Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s tariffs, Trump’s cabinet drama, Trump’s legal woes, Biden’s gift to Trump, deaths under Texas’ abortion ban, Missouri’s ban on trans care for minors, Charlotte’s airport workers’ strike, bird flu, and Mississippi’s runoff election, before diving a little deeper into Biden’s plan to expand Medicare and Medicaid to include weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Trump’s tariff plan, and problems in the Trump cabinet. Richard Beck then joins, jumping right into his particular perspective for the war on terror as a teenager at the time of 9/11, unpacking the bipartisan normalization of the shift to a domestic surveillance state backing a globalized project of enforced American hegemony, and looking at how the Democratic Party (under Obama), in particular, worked to simultaneously present the Bush administration as an aberration, while bureaucratizing, rationalizing, and, ultimately, reinforcing the exact project that was supposedly so absurd. After briefly touching on the window Occupy provided to the Obama administration’s blatant rejection of a progressive movement outside of the political establishment, Beck steps back, diving into the overwhelming media backlash to any sort of critical lens on US hegemony, with a direct line between the “owning the libs” politics of today and the Limbaughian obsession with making fun of the progressive identifiers of the nineties and aughts, alongside a direct tie-in to the bipartisan militarization of American society, be it tanks in police departments, an influx of Humvees on the street, or the catapulting of “SpecOps”-esque comic movies to the forefront of US culture, and how those elements worked to further legitimize the amoral (and often actively immoral) maintenance of US hegemony across the globe. Wrapping up, Richard, Sam, and Emma briefly touch on the particular role of oil in the War on Terror, and why it fails to actually explain the quest for American hegemony in an age of dwindling capitalist expansion, tackling the major role of the US plays well outside of petroleum reserves in an effort, more than anything else, to simply protect its impunity at the top of the global liberal order.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma touch on future coverage of the Longshoremen’s strike, before diving into the continuing death and devastation coming from Texas’ abortion ban, and reflecting on Tim Pool’s desire to make every victim of rape a subject of public criticism if they want an abortion. They also tackle some backlash to Trump naming a pro-vaccination doctor to the position of Surgeon General, plus, you IMs!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Mike Elk, founder of the Payday Report, to discuss the recent news out of Brazil that former President Bolsonaro has been indicted. Then, they speak with Jacob Silverman, co-author of his latest book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, and writer at the AM Quickie newsletter, to discuss Trump's nomination of Howard Lutnick to be Commerce Secretary, and his associations with crypto. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s destruction of Lebanon, Israel’s sanctioning of Haaretz, the Biden-Trump transition, Trump’s developing cabinet, Trump’s attacks on trans people, and Trump’s plan of attack on Jack Smith, before diving a little deeper into the growing tension between the US-Israel alliance and the international order upholding the ICC’s warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu. Mike Elk then joins, diving right into the major developments in Brazil’s criminal case over the far-right (and Bolsonaro-administration-) backed coup and recently-revealed assassination in the wake of Lula da Silva’s reelection in 2022, with the indicting of a massive portion of Bolsonaro’s military advisors occurring last week in the leadup to the indictment of Bolsonaro himself this week, all at the hands of the Brazilian Supreme Court. Elk then walks Sam and Emma through the development of the investigation, with incredibly poor criminal operations UNRELATED to the coup allowing the Court to easily swing snitches over to their side, before stepping back to unpack the evolution of the fascist attacks on Lula and the Brazilian left, from the corrupt imprisonment of Lula and his successor, through the backlash to said political imprisonment, and into Bolsonaro’s coup attempt in 2023. Mike expands on Bolsonaro’s clear connection to the 2018 assassination of Rio de Janeiro city council member Marielle Franco, before wrapping up by noting the stunning impact this entire affair (and, more importantly, the Court's willingness to act on it) has had on completely decapitating the threat of the Brazilian far-right. Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry’s recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. After expanding on the incredibly shady, and fully not evidence-backed dealings of Tether, Jacob wraps up by unpacking the ultimate goal of the crypto industry in completely liberating the movement of money, freeing it from the shackles of absurd concepts like “fraud” and government regulations, and the role the Trump administration can play in making this goal a reality.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Milo Yiannopoulos talk gay sex, not having sex, Laura Loomer, straight sex, abstinence, and definitely not being gay with Tim Pool, before chatting with Guy from Massachusetts and Carrie from New York about certain similarities between Milo and one Nick Fuentes. It’s Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the indefinite cancellation of Trump’s hush money sentencing, Trump’s cabinet of rapists and fraudsters, the MTG-Musk-Ramaswamy connection, the House’s passage of the non-profit killer bill, Schumer’s weak politics, the divide between US-Israel and the rest of the international order over the ICC’s charges, Bolsonaro’s criminal charges, and UAW action in Kentucky, before parsing a little deeper through the vastly different responses to the ICC’s charges against Netanyahu, Gallant, and others, with an adamant defense of genocide from the Biden administration rebuked both internationally and domestically. Digby then joins, as she, Sam, and Emma first reflect on their gut reactions to Trump’s second presidential victory, the distinctions between their responses to 2016 and 2024, and the particular feeling of defeat for the feminist movement as an anti-abortion candidate begins to name his overwhelmingly predatory cabinet. Shifting more toward the policy impact of a second Trump term, Digby dives into the major threat of a “competent” Trump administration, backed by four years of drafting the blueprint for Project 2025, and what to make of growing tensions between Trump and the Senate, be it over leadership or cabinet appointments, expanding on that latter element by assessing the major (and controversial) roles to be played by potential cabinet members Pete Hegseth and Russ Vought. The three of them also touch on the major backing Trump has in the financial power of Elon Musk, and the evolution of the GOP’s clamor for power, before Sam and Emma wrap up the free half with some ancient (as in a mere 8 years ago) comments from RFK about one Donald Trump.
