It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam speaks with Marian Schlotterbeck, professor of history at the University of California, Davis, to discuss the 50th anniversary of the U.S. backed coup in Chile against leader Salvador Allende. First, Sam runs through updates on Kevin McCarthy’s House leadership, a deal between the US and Iran, disaster in Libya, various labor updates, and a new COVID booster, before touching on JD Vance’s recent proposal to handcuff the US Government’s pandemic response until the 2024 elections. Professor Schlotterbeck then joins as she and Sam dive into the legacy left by Salvador Allende as a democratically-elected Marxist, walking through his evolution in Chilean politics and touching on his major policies over his three years in office before his killing in 1973. Then, they take a step back as Professor Schlotterbeck works her way through the CIA’s relationship to Chile pre-1970 – serving both as a Super PAC and Op-Ed machine for right-wingers – and how the Cuban revolution mobilized US intelligence to begin to act even more aggressively in South America, before expanding on the relationship of the CIA and Henry Kissinger to the corporate world so threatened by Allende’s presence. After wrapping up the story of the 1973 coup with a greater assessment of US involvement, Marion and Sam briefly look at US economists’ role in the violent Pinochet regime of the next two and a half decades. They conclude the interview by diving into the lasting effect of Allende on the Chilean left and the ongoing attempts to redraft Augusto Pinochet’s 1980 constitution.
And in the Fun Half, Sam checks out UAW President Shawn Fain's appearance on CNN, the "Drew Barrymore Show" scab effort, Australian hospitality mogul (and freak) Tim Gurner discussing the recent "arrogance" of the labor market, as well as some selections from the PragerU kids renderings of what happened in the Civil War. Plus, your calls & IM's!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
Hey Folks! Covid has hit the office, we look to be back with a full show tomorrow.
It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she's joined by freelance writer Garrison Lovely to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower." Emma starts off by reacting to remarks UAW President Shawn Fain made on CNBC, in response to a question about UAW withholding their endorsement of President Biden. Then, she's joined by Noah and Brendan to discuss Season 4 of Blowback, and Emma's devastation that a postscript from the movie "Rambo" did not, in fact, hand it to the mujahideen in Afghanistan, despite the movie being a love letter of sorts to them regardless. Noah dives into some of the history of the mujahideen, and how the U.S. began involvement with them and supporting them as a Cold War battleground state in the conflict against Russia. Brendan breaks down the antecedents to the Iraq and Afghanistan war, and how all of the elements of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan from the 1970's-1990's, especially their support and eventual rejection of the mujahideen, lead directly into the 20+ year conflict that defined the 21s century. Then Emma is joined by Garrison, who discusses his early employment as an intern, and then full-time staffer at McKinsey Consulting, and how it shaped his views on America capitalism. Garrison explains his work involving the carceral state, and how McKinsey tried to make its mark on American prisons, and also dives into some of the absolutely unbelievable corporate-speak that McKinsey has introduced into the lexicon, like "right-sizing", and how those signifiers mask and obscure some of the more insidious characteristics of the work being done at the firm.
And in the Fun Half, Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton and check in on some of the Senate Republicans, like Josh Hawley, who are getting a little antsy about Mitch McConnell's leadership as Minority Leader after his most recent freeze-up. They then dive into Mehdi Hasan's masterful skewering of Vivek Ramaswamy, who was constitutionally incapable of answering why Trump was the best President of his life time, but also a sore loser who committed abhorrent acts on January 6th. They then get into the REAL, hard-hitting news of the day: Tucker Carlson's bombshell interview with convicted felon and serial fabulist Larry Sinclair, who outlined the (most likely fictional) night where he had (alleged) sex with Barack Obama and smoked crack with him (it was actually cocaine, we think.) They top it off by hearing Tim Pool's thoughts on the matter (would it shock you that he compared it to Christine Blasey Ford's testimony against Justice Kavanaugh)? Plus, your calls & IM's!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Jiaying Zhao, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, to discuss her recent research into the benefits of guaranteed cash transfers, and how they can help reduce homelessness. Then, they're joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the recent updates on the strike and the ongoing negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, they run through updates on Gabe Amo’s victory in Rhode Island, Saudi Arabia’s oil production cut, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago case, the Cop City RICO indictment, Russian bombing in Ukraine, COVID hospitalizations, captive audience meetings and AirBnbs in New York, and Google’s anti-monopoly trials, before parsing through Atlanta’s role as the testing ground for building massive Police day camps despite active local pushback – and how to criminalize those that won’t stop. Dr. Jiaying Zhao then outlines her study into the massive impact of direct cash transfers on the lives of homeless people and on the government's pockets, with only $7,500 drastically reducing both the extent of time spent homeless and the net spending on aid. Then, Shaan Sharma updates us on SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations with Hollywood studios, why the studios refuse to negotiate in good faith for anyone but Wall Street and the shareholders, and the complete corruption of corporate America.
And in the Fun Half: Joe Rogan tells Oliver Anthony you can't just tax the rich, Jeannine Pirro thinks hurricanes started in the 1400s, Elon Musk melts down about Jews ruining his business, and Saul roasts Sam for a second consecutive day and offers his opinions on Bugattis.

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Casual Friday! Sam is joined by Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, he is joined by MR alum extraordinaire Jamie Peck to discuss what exciting things she has coming up. And THEN, he's joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Sam runs through updates on Donald Trump’s Georgia case and the GOP’s case against Fani Willis, Mitch McConnell’s return to the Senate, national union action, the end of another COVID support program, and the Texas Supreme Court upholding a ban on trans-affirming care for minors, before watching UAW President Shawn Fain rail against the “policy failure” that is the existence of billionaires. Heather Parton then joins as she and Sam work through the Georgia GOP’s ongoing attempt to impeach Fulton County DA Fani Willis, Governor Brian Kemp’s rejection of that, and why that might not help back the radicals down. Expanding on the far-right’s role in the legislature, they then tackle Kevin McCarthy’s ongoing debacle as he attempts to give his colleagues a baseless impeachment against Biden in exchange for NOT shutting down the entire government, and why they still want both, before quickly running through the NLRB’s massive decision in a case against Cemex. They wrap up by more broadly assessing the state of Joe Biden and his administration heading into the 2024 election. Jamie Peck then dives into the upcoming debut of her variety show “The Woke Mob” with Jake Flores, this Saturday in New York, before parsing through the ongoing organizing and protest against Atlanta’s Cop City, what Cop City is, and why – despite massive public disapproval for the project and over 100k signatures for a referendum – the Atlanta City Council is taking every chance to undermine attempts to stop the project. Matthew Film guy helps wrap up the program as he and Sam discuss the recent gift-giving debacle involving Ronald Raygun, the ongoing WGA-SAG strike, and gives his recommendations of the book-turned-movie Dogs of War and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Wild Pear Tree.
And in the Fun Half: Sam covers Tucker’s flailing pivot to ‘X’ and strong relationship with Hungary, Ed from Seattle discusses yesterday’s interview’s portion on Hannah Arendt, and Jack from Cleveland platforms Rudy Giuliani’s legal fund. Michael in Miami expands the conversation on Rudy’s troubles, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ibrahim Al-Marashi, Associate Professor of History at the California State University San Marcos, to discuss his recent writing on the Wagner Group and Blackwater. Then, he is joined by Harold Meyerson, editor-at-large at The American Prospect, to discuss the recent decisions made at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). First, Sam runs through updates on the Department of Labor’s overtime change, the delay of the Proud Boys’ sentencing, the labor market, Hurricane Idalia, and other natural disaster and climate updates, before parsing through Biden’s Medicare and student debt agenda. Ibrahim Al-Marashi then dives right into Blackwater’s blueprint for the Wagner Group, and the role of South Africa’s Executive Outcomes in setting the stage for them both, exploring how these three groups were the outcome of their nations capitalizing on the demobilization of state military by funding independent mercenary groups that largely work outside of any accountability apparatus, be it international of public. Expanding on this, Al-Marashi walks through the immense role Blackwater played in US involvement in Iraq, helping commit atrocities in the US’ name without requiring a greater loss of US soldiers, before expanding on the Wagner Group’s relationship to Russia beyond its role in Ukraine, with its operations largely located in Africa, where they’ve spent time warlording and extracting from local communities, all while Russia denied operations in the region. Wrapping up, Sam and Ibrahim walk through the conflict between state militaries and contracted forces, and explore the role that has, and will continue to play in Russia’s floundering invasion of Ukraine. Harold Meyerson then joins, contextualizing the NLRB’s recent Cemex ruling as one of the most empowering labor developments in a half-century of dwindling organizing, and why Jennifer Abruzzo’s Board has chosen now as their moment to be active. Next, he and Sam parse through the actual details of the Cemex decision, why it’s a great first step back towards the Joy-Silk doctrine of the NLRB, and how it aids in both forcing bargaining and punishing union busting. Wrapping up, Meyerson expands on the necessity of labor unions to capitalize on this moment, as they finally have both leverage and public opinion on their side, as well as touching on the role the Supreme Court and Senate have yet to play.
And in the Fun Half: Sam watches the Right meltdown over Oliver Anthony not being a Republican, Nick from St. Louis calls in with a Prigozhin conspiracy, Okajic in NY relays Vivek’s newest freestyle, and Tim Pool accidentally reveals a pattern about his programming. Graham from Maine expands on the evolution of Blackwater, and Mitch McConnell stares into the void, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, They run through updates on Donald Trump’s federal trial date, the New Hampshire GOP’s civil war over the 2024 Primary ballot, Trump’s rampant support in Georgia, increasing COVID hospitalization rates, and Biden and Lula’s plan to call for improved labor conditions, before watching Jesse Watters do some wildly racist pandering to Black people over Trump’s mugshot. Sam and Emma then parse through the upcoming Medicare drug price negotiations, looking at how Biden’s IRA got us here, what his plan for the negotiations is, and how this particular element allows the US government to save en masse and will likely push down drug prices for the rest of us. After tackling the likely lawsuits that will follow Biden’s attempt to impose these negotiations, they shift the conversation to the NLRB’s massive ruling on union busting in the leadup to elections, first contextualizing the NLRB’s doctrine for much of the 20th Century (and why that doctrine got changed) that helped keep union elections legitimate, before walking through the specifics of the recent Cemex Construction ruling, and how it forces employers to bargain and threatens union busting with full unionization. Wrapping up, Sam and Emma discuss Trader Joe’s United filing the first Cemex Bargaining Order, and the unionization attempt in Disney’s VFX department.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Kevin McCarthy finally coming around on the futile impeachment claims against Joe Biden, John from Eugene explores the feasibility of various gun control arguments, Willow from Minnesota parses through trans migration in the US and dealing with general despair over the lasting assault on trans rights from the GOP. Zach from Colorado calls in to cover discrimination in the medical education system, and Glenn Beck calls for restoring an era of social security that never existed, plus, your calls and IMs!
