Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Meron Rapoport, editor of Local Call and writer at +972 Magazine, to discuss the recent passage of  Prime Minister Netanyahu's proposed judicial reforms through the Knesset, its challenges before the Supreme Court, and the unrest that's resulted. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Republican primary polling, Donald Trump’s various indictments, Biden’s brand new student loan program, Florida’s Black history curriculum, extreme heat in Phoenix, and Twitter’s hate speech problem, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the prospects for the Presidential primary on the right. Meron Rapoport then joins, diving right into a recap of the major overhauls to the Israeli judiciary that recently took place, the role the Courts can play in reining it in, and where it will leave Israel’s supposed “democracy.” Expanding on this latter element, Rapoport walks through some of the major players involved in Netanyahu’s reforms, and the violent and genocidal stances towards Palestine and Democracy that they have maintained for decades, including Yariv Levin, Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Bezalel Smotrich. Wrapping up, Meron walks through the responses from the rest of Israel to the passing of Netanyahu’s overhaul, including how it interplays with growing anti-apartheid sentiment in recent years, and talks with Sam and Emma about the future of US-Israeli relations as the latter dives further into fascism.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the role of the US Supreme Court and watch Mark Joseph Stern perfectly encapsulate why Samuel Alito’s recent “leave the Court alone” rampage is absurd and obscene. She speaks with James Risen, senior national security correspondent at The Intercept, and co-author Thomas Risen, to discuss their recent book The Last Honest Man: The CIA, the FBI, the Mafia, and the Kennedys—and One Senator's Fight to Save Democracy. First, Emma runs through updates on ANOTHER Fed rate raise despite cooling inflation, rising child labor, a telecom probe, Mitch McConnell’s medical emergency, Niger’s coup, and Hunter Biden’s legal woes, before touching on Jim Cramer’s telling CNBC comments on the UPS Teamsters and UAW. James and Thomas Risen then join, diving right into a background on Senator Frank Church and his political evolution into a progressive, anti-imperialist, and anti-authoritarian legend of American politics, including his outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War and the expansion of the US Intelligence community in the wake of the assassination of JFK, and eventual push for the establishment of the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (Church Committee). Sam and Emma speak to freelance journalist David Neiwert to discuss his recent book The Age of Insurrection: The Radical Right's Assault on American Democracy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel disempowering their Supreme Court, offensives in Moscow and Odessa, the recent Spanish elections, various labor actions across the country, Bernie’s pursuit of government-developed pharmaceuticals, and environmental warming, also diving into Ron DeSantis’ recent comments on Florida’s new “lost cause” education around the “civilizing” nature slavery. David Neiwert then joins, parsing through his own history studying right-wing authoritarianism in the US, beginning with his childhood in Idaho, strong John Birch Society territory, before starting his work in journalism during the rise of white supremacist militias, the Aryan nation, and hate crimes over the 1970s and ’80s, tackling the internal conflicts of addressing these subjects as a journalist, and why journalism must be rooted in public welfare. Moving forward, Neiwert tracks the evolution of right-wing extremist and white supremacist organizations over the Clinton and Bush administrations, leading up to the mobilizing event of Obama’s (a black person’s) election, before looking to the era of the Trump regime and the leadup to January 6th. After walking through the defining traits of right-wing authoritarian followers – namely submission aggression, and conventionalism – Neiwert, Sam, and Emma dive into the January 6th insurrection, the various narratives around it, and why it was no doubt a neo-fascist insurrection, before wrapping with 1/6’s aftermath, and how the far-right has pivoted to localized, grassroots insurrections.

She speaks to Melissa Villa-Nicholas, associate professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, to discuss her recent book Data Borders: How Silicon Valley Is Building An Industry Around Immigrants. Then, she is joined by Kyle Bailey, Ph.D candidate at York University in Toronto, to discuss the recent right wing shift in Finland's government. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s various legal woes, Biden’s meeting with the president of the UAW, the absurd ongoings of the House, abortion legislation, and labor news, before reflecting on the 3rd anniversary of the passing of Michael Brooks, and his lasting legacy on the Left, and watching Biden’s recent statements on labor policy. Melissa Villa-Nicholas then dives right into her concept of “Data Borders,” looking at the core concept of “borderlands,” particularly those between the US and Mexico, and how data plays a massive role in the functioning of these areas – particularly when it comes to the interactions between individuals and federal agencies. Professor Villa-Nicholas then dives into the role of tech companies like Amazon and Palantir in constructing massive databases for law enforcement and predictive policing, that often rely on the data mining of immigrants, with border and immigration agencies like ICE and DHS tracking all sorts of biometric data from those crossing (both legally, and illegally). Expanding on the public-private partnership between federal agencies and big tech, Melissa parses through the history of tech involvement in the militarization of police, how private surveillance has permeated myriad legal industries, and what the future of fighting for information autonomy – especially for non-citizens – looks like. After expanding on the rise of the far-right Finns Party, and the militant racists that stand at its forefront, Bailey and Emma wrap up the interview by looking at the major policy implications of the new coalition, how it might impact Finnish labor and welfare, and the role the invasion of Ukraine has played so far.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks to Mila Wade, a Louisville area Starbucks worker, who participated in recent store shutdowns in conjunction with workers at Sunergos Coffee.  Then, they are joined by Guardian environmental reporter Oliver Milman to discuss his recent piece "'Double Agents: Fossil-Fuel Lobbyists Work for US Groups Trying to Fight Climate Crisis." First, Sam runs through updates on the slow walking of Trump’s stolen documents case, Russian attacks on Odessa grain infrastructure, Rudy’s potential flip, protests in Israel, Atlanta City Council sabotaging an upcoming Cop City referendum, and US relations to Israel, diving into Rashida Tlaib’s intense (and accurate) comments on Congress’ refusal to acknowledge Israeli apartheid. Mila Wade then dives right into the recent labor action across the Louisville-Clarkson area that shut down all Starbucks and Sunergos coffee shops in the cities, tackling the ongoing unionization process that the various Starbucks shops are undergoing, and the myriad ways in which Starbucks, despite successful unionization votes, is seeking to undermine and discourage the bargaining process. After expanding on the joint action between Starbucks and Sunergos employees, Wade and Sam discuss the importance of growing labor consciousness among our younger generations, particularly in sparking inspiration and connections among those with limited access to labor organizing, before wrapping up with the future of the labor fight, and what those of us on the outside can do to help. Oliver Milman then walks through the myriad ongoing climate emergencies across the US and the globe, as he discusses the proliferation of oil and gas lobbyists working on BOTH sides of the fight, whether that be environmental organizations, museums, tech companies, or local governments, all supposedly “pushing back,” while effectively funneling information directly back to those they’re fighting against. Wrapping up, Milman and Sam parse through the other moral and tactical conflicts of interest that arise from the fossil-fuel double agents, and the various absurdities that come from using the tools of capitalism to fight an effect of capitalism.

And in the Fun Half: Sam watches RFK plunge even deeper into the far-right libertarian trend of reactionary fear-mongering, Jake Tapper becomes the most recent media member to ask Ron DeSantis why he’s sucking to his face, and Marjorie Taylor Greene happily steps into her new post as Biden’s PR rep. Todd from Raleigh reflects on the absurd lionization of the Unabomber, Jacob from Alabama dives into the state’s attempt to avoid redistricting (and what may come from it), and David from Wyoming dives into the US’ continuing attacks on unhoused folks. Vic from Ventury walks through safety vs. surveillance tactics when it comes to dashcams, and Ben Shapiro levels another hearty media critique against a… Disney casting choice, plus, your calls and IMs!

Sam and Emma speak to KJ Boyle, research assistant at the Revolving Door Project, to discuss FTC Chair Lina Khan's appearance before the House Judiciary Committee last week. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump’s various ongoing (and approaching) trials, Alabama gerrymandering, labor action in UPS and Amazon, and fascist policy in Iowa and Texas, before diving into the absurd arguments around any criminal proceedings involving Trump, and the complete lack of a conspiracy cannon on the far right. KJ Boyle then dives right into the phenomenal job Lina Khan has done in completely upsetting the business establishment by… being anti-monopoly, walking through her nearly 70 features in WSJ OpEds, and how, exactly, she has gone about revamping the FTC. He, Sam, and Emma then look to her appearance before the HJC, discussing the major talking points the GOP has leveled against her, and the absurdity of a Meta-stock-owning ethics council claiming her interest in anti-trust maybe should recuse her from dealing with Meta. Wrapping up, they watch the highlights from Khan’s appearance, and why anti-trust is a winning topic moving forwards. Sam and Emma also dive into the recent reports coming out of Texas of Gov. Abbott’s order for the border patrol to begin drowning and dehydrating migrant children.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Ron DeSantis do the classic Republican “your Medicare is safe… but not really” schtick, Kowalski from Nebraska gives an agriculture report and parses through some difficult tensions in yesterday’s NATO interview. Sam reflects on his own influence on the SAG strike, No Labels gets astonishingly exposed as a fraud, and Lydia from PA dives into her experiences with gender-affirming care at the VA. Mason from Alabama and Alan from North Carolina discuss their respective local politics, plus, your calls and IMs!
