Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Daniel Bessner & Derek Davison, co-hosts of the American Prestige podcast, to discuss last week's NATO summit in Lithuania. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on labor action across the US, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, AIPAC Dems’ attacks on Jayapal, and Ron DeSantis, before watching AOC help pump up a crowd of UPS Teamsters in the lead-up to a potential strike. Daniel Bessner and Derek Davison then run through a brief history of NATO since the fall of the USSR, exploring how the US dealt with the disappearance of its only hegemonic challenger – choosing to push a mass expansion of the anti-Soviet (and pro-US) NATO alliance, and ramping up their levels of military action across the globe as the project for a New American Century began. Bessner and Davison then look to the 2004 NATO expansion alongside NATO action in Afghanistan as a continuation of US tactics of hegemonic expansion during the Cold War, particularly the country’s shift towards a capitalist-focused foreign policy that maintains the dominance of the US Dollar. After looking at the US and NATO’s stance towards Ukraine, and how the decision to tempt them with acceptance completely bit the organization in the ass, they wrap up by assessing the US’ slow pivot to the Pacific, and looking at what role the US can (and should) play in promoting peace in Ukraine.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Ron Pearlman’s killer response to Bob Iger’s comments about using the strike to force actors into homelessness, before tackling the incredibly spineless and corrupt response by Democrats to Rep. Jayapal’s statements on Israel’s apartheid state. Jim Jordan defends the little man (Elon Musk) against constant attacks (emails) from the oppressor (Lina Khan), Jody from MA dives into the problems with assisted living, and Miles from Minneapolis dives into his experiences with the Teamsters’ Sean O’Brien. Sam and Emma also address RFK’s odd anti-Semitic and sinophobic COVID claims, plus, your calls and IMs!

Alex Pareene then joins as he dives into the continuing story of inflation, and what could have been if the establishment wasn’t so keen on ignoring its roots in price gouging. Next, he, Emma, and Sam look to the Republicans’ grotesque $900bln defense bill as perfectly exemplary of the GOP’s complete capitulation to anti-woke politics despite its stunning lack of popularity – something that’s also seen in the falling popularity of the once-prophesied DeSantis campaign, before wrapping up the interview with an assessment of New York state politics post-Cuomo and what a strong NY Democratic party could mean on the national level. Andrew Leeds then walks through the central issues facing SAG-AFTRA, discussing the massive role residuals play in actors’ income, and in qualifying for healthcare and other union benefits, only for the streaming revolution to nearly take these payments off the shelves entirely. After expanding on the attempted gigification of the acting industry, Andrew wraps up by discussing the incredible spirit of solidarity in the union (and their sister orgs), and what those on the outside can do to help. Andy Kindler concludes the first half as he assesses the incredible grifting done by Jimmy Door, and tackles why the hell some famous people get so obsessed with being wrong they dive headfirst into bigotry.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to Bradford Vivian, Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences at Penn State University, to discuss his recent book Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education. Then, she is joined by Marco Fonseca, instructor in Latin American and International Studies at the York University Glendon campus, to developments surrounding Guatemala's elections. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden’s visit to Ukraine, a potential return to the ERA, labor action with SAG, the EPA, and Ray Epps’ lawsuit against Fox News (and how it might have played into Tucker’s departure). Bradford Vivian then joins as he parses through the evolution of conservative attacks on higher education over the last few decades, with entire organizations, like TPUSA and YAF, and individuals, like Brett Weinstein and Barry Weiss, who have built up an entire industry of reactionaries who go to colleges to talk about how they can’t say anything at colleges. Professor Vivian parses through this blueprint as, largely, a pretext for state-control of higher education, and a way to undermine social justice movements, and the communities that form around and within academia. Stepping back, Bradford walks Emma through some parallels between this era of anti-intellectual attacks, and the similar conservative battle we saw in the mid-20th century, particularly in how it can serve to undermine social justice movements, before parsing through how the recent attacks have pervaded through all levels of education, K-12, as we see with attacks on CRT and the Don’t Say Gay bill. Marco Fonseca tackles the most recent round of Guatemalan elections and the surprise success of the Semilla party, a left, anti-corruption party that won enough to advance to a runoff, before stepping back to discuss the roots of the “Seed” party in the Guatemalan spring, with son of first President Arévalo helping to found the party. After walking through the CIA-backed Coup that violently halted the Guatemalan spring, and the decades of growing corruption that followed, Fonseca dives into the recent backlash to said corruption and parses through why the Elite interference in the 2023 election seemingly ignored the threat of Semilla, before they wrap up the show by assessing the future of Guatemalan election integrity as a Semilla ban becomes more and more likely.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as Alex from New York proposes some hypothetical bouts between reactionaries, Josh from Chicago discusses how his role as a teacher has been affected by Republican attacks on teachers as “groomers,” and Maria Bartiromo hosts a wild blood-libel round table. Next, Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the ongoing NATO drama, with backlash to both Sweden’s entry and Ukraine’s lack of a concrete path, also touching on the climate change inflection point that we are in the midst of, with Florida’s waters reaching all times temperature highs (along with the rest of the World’s environment), and the North East going through torrential storms, before diving into Obama’s recent statements about his tone-deaf advice to Malia about climate nihilism (you know, that thing he largely symbolizes for her generation). Sam and Emma speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the bombshell rulings that came down at the end of the Supreme Court's most recent term. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and outside support, the future of a government shutdown, the Supreme Court ethics bill, climate change, labor action, and more theocratic fascism from the right, before diving into the anniversary of the Tusla White Supremacist massacre of a massive Black community, and the Oklahoman Right’s ongoing effort to revise history. Mark Joseph Stern then joins as he tackles the rollout of the Supreme Court’s most recent session, beginning with moderate cases in June before rapidly dropping vitriolic right-wing decisions right before the July 4th break, effectively helping to bury the disastrous role the Court is continuing to play in US politics. Next, he, Sam, and Emma parse through the individual roles the liberal justices on the Court have assumed, before Stern walks through SCOTUS’ recent rejection of Student Debt Cancellation via the HEROES Act, why the Court relied on the Major Questions Doctrine, and whether the Biden Administration’s pivot to the Higher Education Act could be successful. After a discussion on 303 Creative v. Elenis, the absurd lack of standing in the case, and how it largely undermines Lawrence v. Texas (Sodomy Law), Emma, Sam, and Mark wrap up the interview by assessing the affirmative action decision, and Clarence Thomas’ ultimate decision to limit active diversity to the military.

He and Emma talk to David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through this week’s headlines, including the impact of the Fed’s continuing impact on workers, US funding for Ukraine, three straight days of global heat records, Lula’s impact on Amazon deforestation, and labor action, before Sam parses through his recent trip to Monticello. David Dayen then joins as he starts by peppering Sam with questions about his work with RFK as well as Kennedy’s political evolution over the last two decades, before the conversation shifts to Dayen’s recent article on the economic theory of government spending “crowding out” private business. David parses through what this economic theory entails, how it has become baked into any US policy, with any public spending requiring equivalent support for private businesses, and why the incredible success of the IRA and CHIPS act should absolutely be challenging this and the role direct public investment can play in the economy. Continuing, David, Sam, and Emma tackle the material impact a change in our economic philosophy could have, and what a return to big government could mean. After a quick discussion on the continuing inflation misinformation, they wrap up the interview by assessing the Biden administration’s pivot to the Higher Education Act for Student loan forgiveness.

Tony Evers’ recent killer legislative move. David Broder joins as he first runs through updates on recent turmoil in France in the wake of a police shooting of an unarmed teenager, tackling the history of over-policing Black and migrant communities in Europe, and how the French and European far-right is turning this issue into one of heterogeneity and immigration, with little to no pushback from Macron and the center. Next, Broder shifts his focus back to Italy, as he walks Emma through the normalization of far-right political figures, from Berlusconi to Meloni, and how the growth of the clearly-fascist wing of the American GOP has given an excuse to ethnonationalists worldwide. Stepping back, Broder dives into how right-wing Italians are grappling with their country’s history with fascism, and the attempt to repaint their role during WW2 as victims of communist violence rather than oppressors aligned with the Nazis, before they wrap up the interview by looking deeper at Giorgia Meloni’s cult-of-personality and how her womanhood is used symbolize the greater eugenicist underpinnings of fascism. Amjad Iraqi then joins as he and Emma walk through the past few weeks of increasing genocidal violence against Palestinians in the West Bank city of Jenin. After tackling the significant escalation that Israel took by bombing the West Bank, Iraqi walks through the actual process of violence and settlement that occurred in Jenin, the toll on the Palestinian population, and the increasing violence of Israeli apartheid.
