It's a special All Calls Casual Friday! Call into the show at 646-257-3920! Sam and Emma also talk to Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective, about what's next in the fight to maintain student debt forgiveness as the Supreme Court gears up to rule on President's Biden's plan. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court’s recent decision impacting native sovereignty, peace in Ukraine, Iowa’s abortion ban, labor action, and climate change, also diving into Boris Johnson’s exit from Parliament and the MASSIVE updates on the Biden crime family (turns out there’s still not much). Nathan from Kansas City dives into the bigger picture of pistol brace legislation, Kaley from Boston discusses the relationship between queer acceptance and legislation, and Mike from Troy takes on the absurd lack of comprehension Matt Walsh and Jordan Peterson have on the topic of trans medical issues. Sam and Emma also listen to JP’s Antifanalysis, Eric from Pittsburgh brings up criterion censorship, and Dave from Charlottesville explores the dem-ification of NC and the impact it has on local corruption. Astra Taylor then walks through the state of Biden’s student debt relief, why his admin insisted on using the HEROES Act, and why other avenues remain open to him. They also assess the impending Supreme Court cases on the issue, and explore what Biden actually would be open to.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Anonymous about the world of political consulting, Jake from Rhode Island discusses the impact of a local school board takeover, and Steven from Mississippi explores the relationship between fundamentalist religion and the rejection of non-religiously-affiliated welfare. DJ Cold Case clears up some of yesterday’s Discord drama, Michael Knowles is offended by a flag, and Billy from Sacramento dives into her experiences transitioning, and the lack of understanding around hormone therapy, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to Kerry Howley, feature writer at New York Magazine, to discuss her recent book Bottoms Up and the Devil Laughs: A Journey Through The Deep State. Then, she is joined by Edwin Ackerman, assistant professor of sociology at Syracuse University, to discuss his recent piece on Mexican politics in the New Left Review entitled "The AMLO Project". First, Emma runs through Thursday’s headlines, tackling the Supreme Court’s decision regarding native sovereignty, and Lindsay Graham’s bold appearance on Hannity to wish Donald Trump a very happy birthday. Kerry Howley then dives right into her work exploring the extreme results of the loss of personal identity in the age of the Internet, working through the story of Reality Winner, a 25-year-old whistleblower whom the US Government painted as a deep-state terrorist. First, she and Emma step back to look at how she became contracted with the NSA, where she stumbled upon a document suggesting Russia had engaged in election interference in 2016, before parsing through her delivering of said document to the Intercept, where the information was completely mishandled resulting in the full force of the law coming down on Winner. Next, Howley dives into the project of the prosecution to turn Winner into a radical anti-American terrorist, largely by relying on factors of her life directly related to her work with the government, before she and Emma explore how this story is reflected in the backlash to various US whistleblowers, as well-meaning citizens, feeling civic obligation, are turned into anti-social monsters by the very government look misconduct forced their hand in the first place. Wrapping up, they look at the neoliberal nature of precarity as a central factor in putting all of us in similarly difficult positions. Edwin Ackerman then walks through the rise of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, current President of Mexico, from a surprise left-wing mayoral victory in Mexico City to a 30-point victory in the 2018 election. After stepping back to explore his political evolution and party affiliation, Emma and Ackerman tackle the success of his recently established MORENA party, and the pro-labor reforms his government has implemented, also touching on the evolution of his base, and addressing the allegations of authoritarianism from certain neolib outlets. Wrapping up, they explore the relationship between corruption, populism, and left-wing politics, and how AMLO’s regime has begun to change that.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they tackle the generative language model in sheep’s clothing that is AI, celebrate the success of Kari Lake’s new single, and watch Crowder discuss parental and marital abuses seemingly unrelated to his own actions. Dave from Jamaica and the MR Crew reminisce on some of their favorite conservative “punk” anthems, Gerrard from Florida discusses discussion of religion, and Glenn Grothman finally lends a voice to the voiceless (gas stoves), plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma discuss some of the biggest stories of the week, including (of course) Trump's arraignment in Miami yesterday. Then, they're joined by Dr. Titi Afolabi, resident physician in internal medicine at Mass General Brigham (MGB), to discuss the MGB resident physicians recently winning their National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election. First, Sam and Emma run through today’s biggest headlines, including updates on Fed policy, the GOP’s devious dealings on the debt ceiling, the NLRB’s expansion of the definition of “employee,” and a deal between UPS and their teamsters. Next, Sam and Emma parse through coverage of Donald Trump’s arraignment on the right, including Fox News’ dubbing of Biden as a “Wannabe Dictator,” and the classic “everyone who’s against Trump is a pedophile/commie/CRT-fan” arguments from myriad right-wingers, before looking ahead to the Democratic primaries in 2024 and what role RFK will play amidst his shift towards free-market politics. Dr. Titi Afolabi then dives right into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on exacerbating the already extreme nature of Mass Gen’s residents’ copious work and low pay, further undercutting the care they could provide their patients. After walking through the particular economic context of this unionization drive, Dr. Afolabi, Sam, and Emma tackle the various cohorts involved at MGB and why the residents are the first to organize, before wrapping up the conversation by analyzing future organizing strategy after the recent NLRB decision, and where they fit into greater Residency organizing.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Cornel West leaving the People’s Party for the Green Party, and the response from PP, also touching on Dave Rubin’s meeting with Balázs Orbán (no familial relation, yes political relation), and watching Nicholas Carlson, Global EIC of Insider, engage in grassroots union busting. Chris from Albany discusses the importance of Emma’s recent trans-people-in-sports take, Guy from Charlotte dives into the absurdity of certain “civil war” attitudes, and Ryan from Central Florida parses through the state of his state’s politics. John from VA shares a personal story, Charlie Kirk takes on woke condiments, and Sam discusses the evolution of RFK Jr. and his role in the upcoming presidential election, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
Sam and Emma host Peter Shamshiri, or Law Boy on Twitter, co-host of the 5-4 Podcast, to discuss some of the recent big decisions coming out of the Supreme Court, and what's still left on the docket. Sam and Emma start off by taking another look at some of the reactions to the big Trump indictment prior to his arraignment this afternoon in Miami. They include Alan Dershowitz, who famously didn't doubt the severity of the indictment (he did, days ago), discussing how bad this looks for Trump, and Speaker McCarthy going with the "bathroom doors lock" defense for why Trump would have multiple boxes of classified documents in his bathroom in Mar-A-Lago. Then Peter joins the show to discuss whether he'd go to bat for Trump in Florida since he apparently is still looking for lawyers, but then more seriously dives into the shocking Milligan decision, where Justices Kavanaugh and Roberts sided with the liberals to preserve the Voting Rights Act. Sam, Emma and Peter then discuss the Talevski case, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's first majority opinion, that, via a narrow ruling, preserved the structure of Medicaid. They then look to the future as to how the court might view the affirmative action and student debt decisions that are still before them, and if there are any other cases that Peter has his eye on (keep track of Brackeen v. Haaland, a case involving the Indian Child Welfare Act.)
And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew discuss Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani wanting to shove Hunter Biden's laptop up Bill Barr's ass, James Comer DEFINITELY having something from that FBI form him and Chuck Grassley think will indict the "Biden Crime Family", Tulsi Gabbard's big announcement that she's BACK in the military (heading up the PsyOps division, incidentally), the big New Yorker piece about Bari Weiss's OTHER sham venture, plus, your calls & IM's!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Alissa Quart, executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, to discuss her recent book Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves from the American Dream. Then, they're joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the Virginia legislative primaries, coming up next Tuesday June 20th. Sam and Emma first run through today’s big headlines, parsing through Trump’s most recent indictments, and why even his GOP allies are saying he might be done. Alissa Quart then dives right into the ironic origins of the US’ “bootstraps” myth of the “self-made man” as terms meant to poke fun at those who believed in this oxymoronic dream, before being embraced by various earnest authors like Emerson and Thoreau – as well as perhaps less earnest ones – who began to reframe these ideas in celebration of rugged individualism (despite their own dependence on community). Expanding on the conversation, Quart then walks through the redefining of these ideas on a political level over the course of the Twentieth Century, from the Presidency of Hoover to the Neoliberal turn under Reagan and Clinton, all serving to reify the defining American myth of meritocracy. After touching on the particular corporatization of this myth in the 21st Century, Alissa, Sam, and Emma wrap up by exploring interpersonal and political avenues to begin busting this myth, and ways to materially begin that shift. Aaron Kleinman then takes on Virginia’s impending legislative primaries, and why these elections make or break the politics of a swing state that serves as a lifeline to much of the hard-red South, particularly with the threat of pro-life Democrats.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Bill Barr turn his back on Donald Trump while Kari Lake jumps in line to defend him (and her VP chances), Joe from Ohio discusses accountability for gun control, and Aesop’s Foibles discusses political firings and the world of unemployment. The MR Crew also dives into the Trump-DeSantis race as it heats up (very unevenly), and watches Charlie Kirk effortlessly put down women at the TPUSA Young Women’s Leadership Summit. Mike from Maryland asks the MR Crew for their takes on some gun laws, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Sam and Emma start off by discussing the Supreme Court's shocking decision regarding Alabama's congressional districts, and how Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's constitutional interpretation in oral arguments back in October helped set up a victory for the Voting Rights Act. Then, Digby joins the show to discuss the bombshell Trump indictment, how the case has been assigned to a judge Trump literally appointed to the bench, and the entire Republican party, including presidential candidates trying to depose him from the top of the presidential ticket (looking at you, Meatball Ron) are coalescing behind an extremely coordinated PR campaign: that Trump is the victim of a 2-tiered justice system designed to prosecute Democrats' political enemies, and that America is descending into a banana republic. They also observe that this strategy has taken hold all over the spectrum, whether it's televangelist Robert Jeffress declaring that the Durham report "immunizes" Trump from being indicted, to "reasonable" Rep. Nancy Mace toeing the new party line on Fox with Harris Faulkner. They remark on how no one, save for also-ran presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson, could bring themselves to even acknowledge that what Trump did was illegal and disqualifying for him to run for elected office. They also get down to one of the simpler aspects of this matter: If Trump had just given all the documents back after being subpoenaed, this wouldn't have even been on anyone's radar, let alone the Department of Justice! Digby, Sam, and Emma also speculate on why so many candidates in the Republican primary haven't dropped out: they're hoping for a deus ex machina of sorts-Trump dying or going to jail. And Trump is hoping for a deus ex machina of his own: to stick it out in the race, win the nomination and the presidency, then potentially issue...himself a presidential primary. They touch on the unique odiousness of Ron DeSantis the man and Ron DeSantis the presidential candidate, as well as the current House Freedom Caucus uprising after the debt ceiling bill passed and was signed into law.
And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene not knowing what the Glass-Steagall Act was because...she was born after it came out, Megyn Kelly taking Dave Rubin to the mat over his DeSantis surrogacy and DeSantis's unwillingness to any unfriendly media (Megyn Kelly?? Unfriendly media??), a fresh new take on false-flag left-bashing in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota that saw a man get 2 years in prison for vandalizing his own home and blaming it on lefty anarchists. Plus, your calls & IM's!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to independent journalist Antony Loewenstein to discuss his recent book The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World. Then, she is joined by Ramenda Cyrus, John Lewis Writing Fellow at The American Prospect, to discuss her recent piece entitled "Predatory Lending’s Prey of Color." First, Emma runs through updates on the Freedom Caucus’ debt ceiling tantrum, Comer walking back his contempt vote, the Supreme Court turning out a surprising Voting Rights Act decision, Fox’s lawsuit against Tucker, growing jobless claims, the passing of Pat Robertson, Louisiana’s gender-affirming care ban, and foreshadowing of a coup in Colombia, also diving into Steve Malloy’s appearance with Laura Ingraham to reassure us that the health effects of smoke are actually just a liberal conspiracy. Antony Loewenstein then dives right into his reporting on Israel’s export of their apartheid technologies, beginning with his work in Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Honduras, and his realization that in these very geographically-specific conflicts, there were always traces of the tactics and technologies employed by Israel in their occupation of Palestine. Next, he and Emma step back to assess Israeli apartheid as the longest-running occupation in modern history, with the Israeli economy – largely in tech and defense – raking in the big bucks from the relationship, with financial ties to the West from the beginning of the Nakba strengthening their economic and political support over the last 75 years. Antony then assesses Israel’s role as the 10th biggest arms dealer in the world, despite their relatively small size, with the occupation of Palestine acting as one of the most active military and intelligence testing grounds in the world, before he walks Emma through the long history of this industry and export in Israel, including their role in supporting genocide across the Global south during the 1970s and ‘80s, and how they have kept those ties strong over the last decade. Next, Ramenda Cyrus walks through the story of Ms. Lilly to demonstrate the prominent and growing issue of predatory lending in the US, parsing through the tactics these predators use, and the infrastructural gaps they exploit. Wrapping up, Cyrus and Emma explore the particular role of Bank-deserts in inflaming this issue, why this exploitation primarily affects low-income people of color, and how this all relates to the defanging of Dodd-Frank.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they assess the Supreme Court’s surprising decision on an Alabama voting rights case, Tom from Raleigh discusses the validity of abstinence, and Chris Christie launches his campaign with an attack on the Trump family swamp. DeSantis catches backlash for a low blow against Trump (literally just using AI), Dan from Boise explores the idea of abortion “tourism” and the backlash to it, and the MR Crew covers LIV Golf’s merger with PGA. Tommy from somewhere gives some music recs, David Sacks spreads his billions between the DeSantis and RFK bandwagons, and Kristi Noem starts her campaign for Trump’s VP, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
It's Hump Day! Sam hosts independent journalist Erin Reed to discuss the recent spate of anti-trans bills working their way through state legislatures across the country. Then they're joined by Joshua Landis, head of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, to discuss Syria's recent re-introduction into the Arab League. First, Sam runs through updates on the Florida grand jury Trump case, Mark Meadows’ testimony against Trump, the continuing environmental emergency in the American northeast, right-wingers leaving behind their gas stove schtick, Tucker’s Twitter show, and US-Ukraine intelligence on the Nord Stream fiasco, also diving into the absurdity of economists sticking with their decades-old unemployment lies. Erin Reed then dives right into assessing the state of the right-wing’s attack on trans people nationwide, exploring how they got the entire GOP on board despite the topic’s electoral failures, and why Florida is a good case study for the fundamentalist dystopia they want to create. Wrapping up, Erin tackles the similarities we see between transphobic healthcare legislation and abortion TRAP laws, discusses the fight between progressive and fundamentalist states over border rights and trans care, and why parental rights might wind up saving trans lives in court. Joshua Landis then reflects on over a decade of US-Syrian conflict, stepping back to parse through the role of US intervention under the Obama Administration, with Obama’s trepidation and interventionist tendencies resulting in a classic US counterinsurgency quagmire, destabilizing the region in the hopes of weakening Assad’s regime while not fully delivering power to outside terrorist groups (Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, ISIS, etc). They also tackle the role of this conflict as a US proxy war, while simultaneously pushing the parties involved closer to the US’ supposed “enemies.” After assessing the current actors in the region, and the particular role of US-Kurdish relations, Joshua walks Sam through Donald Trump’s Caesar sanctions, and the current HR-3202 to continue them, exploring what the actual goal of these sanctions was, and why the US refuses to learn from their imperialist mistakes.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR Crew discuss the relative importance of the UFO whistleblowing case, watch Manchin get shut up by environmental protestors, Gabriel from Washington dives into AI growth, and Corey from SF parses through the ADHD medication shortage. Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz side with guns over gas stoves in the culture war, and Crazy Canadian asks many questions about the recent Glacier NW v. Teamsters SCOTUS decision, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent decisions regarding labor and environmental regulation by the Supreme Court. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s defensive, DeSantis’ human trafficking schtick, Atlanta’s City Council approving the Cop City funding in the face of mass public opposition, Oklahoma’s funding of religious schools, SAG-AFTRA’s strike, PGA’s merger with a Saudi golf league, and the Quebec wildfires, before parsing through some of yesterday’s best speeches in front of the Atlanta City Council. Mark Joseph Stern then dives right into assessing last month’s Sackett v. EPA decision in which the Supreme Court unanimously curtailed the Clean Water Act’s wetland protections, going in and effectively rewriting Congress’ provision protecting wetlands “adjacent” to protected bodies of water in favor of only those with surface connections – less than 50% of those originally protected. Stern, Sam, and Emma go on to tackle this decision’s relationship to the Chevron doctrine, going beyond simply undermining vague delegations of power to governmental agencies and completely editing out explicit Congressional approval of agency power. Next, Mark Joseph Stern parses through the Court’s 8-1 decision on Glacier NW vs. Teamsters, siding against employees’ right to strike, in favor of protecting minimal property damage that the strikers made an active effort to prevent, as Stern walks Sam and Emma through the overriding of clear precedent and the power of the NLRB in this decision. Wrapping up, Mark explores why the Supreme Court’s decisions in June aren’t likely to get better.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Cornell West’s entrance into the Presidential race with the People’s Party, discuss Twitter’s continuing debacle around their TwitterFiles, and parse through the mystery deal between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kevin McCarthy to get the debt ceiling deal done. They also dive into Florida’s virulently anti-immigrant SB-1718 and the impact its passing has had, Mario in Georgia dives into DeSantis’ military comments, Kai from New Jersey discusses his state’s elections, and William from LA discusses the importance of diverse news sources. Fox News finds a theocratic temp to fill Tucker’s spot, plus, your calls and IMs!

The Majority Report with Sam Seder - https://majorityreportradio.com/
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Steve Vladeck, Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law, to discuss his recent book The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s offensive, the WGA writers’ strike, Twitter’s dropping revenue, fascist legislation in Tennessee and Texas, Mike Pence’s entrance to the GOP primary, and rising COVID rates, also previewing the increasingly fascist candidacies of Nikki Haley and other Trump opponents. Steve Vladeck then dives right into the distinction between the newly dubbed “Shadow Docket” and the Merit Docket – which involves years of litigation, oral arguments, full decisions and is typically what we think of when we imagine a Supreme Court case – and the longstanding reliance on both dockets, the former for routine and expedited cases, and the latter for cases with material and lasting impact. Vladeck then walks Sam and Emma through the revolution that the shadow docket has undergone during the Post-Trump conservative majority, with the Court expediting the Trump Administration’s challenges whenever requested, and essentially ignoring the processes that gave their institution legitimacy in the first place. After assessing the rather partisan nature of the Court’s recent use of the shadow docket, Sam, Emma, and Steve look at the evolution of the docket and the public’s faith in the Court and emphasize the importance of public pressure in delegitimizing this institution.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma chat with Giuseppe in Jacksonville on the devastating impact fundamentalists have on their (and neighboring) communities, explore Joe Manchin’s potential presidential run, and AJ from Baltimore assesses the electoral evils of Trump and DeSantis. Steve Deace rings in Pride Month by calling Trump gay, Candace Owens, Jordan Peterson, and Matt Walsh do some unsurprisingly stupid and deranged transphobia, and Robert from Manhattan discusses coverage of trans rights, plus, your calls and IMs!
