COULD COLORADO REPUBLICANS LOSE SAFE CONGRESSIONAL SEATS? We all know the party is a hot mess that can't raise any money and spends too much time attacking Republicans rather than Democrats. Jon Caldara writes about that here. Now with the carpet bagging of Lauren Boebert into a crowded primary field in the 4th Congressional district and the announcement by Doug Lamborn that he isn't seeking re election in the 5th, we've got a couple of wild cards to pay attention to. Businessman Jeff Hurd, who was primarying Boebert until she jumped ship, has a new opponent in noted Trumpet Ron Hanks, who is still running on a platform of a stolen election I'm assuming, as he's a one trick pony and that pony is sucking up to Trump. The Democrat in that race has raised over $7 MILLION, I'm guessing most of which is from out of state but that is going to be a big war chest. So who is going to run for Lamborn's seat? This column breaks down the players, but the one that sticks out to me is David Williams, the current Trumpet head of the Colorado GOP. He can't raise money for the party but he's going to raise money for a campaign? We could conceivably split the primary vote among reasonable and decent Republicans and nominate three of the most toxic Republicans I've ever seen. Sigh. THE HOUTHIS HAVE BEEN PUT ON NOTICE The Hamas allied Houthis in Yemen have been giving a warning to stop their shenanigans in the Red Sea where they have been harassing and capturing ships trying to pass through shipping routes. Now the US and our allies, which includes Britain and about a dozen other nations, have sent their last warning to the Houthis and are threatening retaliation if the attacks don't stop. The statement was a strong one but we'll see if we actually follow through with it. I still remember Obama's "red line" in Syria that meant nothing. From the Wall Street Journal:The Houthis soon turned their sights to commercial ships, including by using the same kind of ballistic missiles that Iran has provided to the group, U.S. intelligence says. Houthi officials have said they are aiming only at ships linked to Israel, but the Pentagon has tracked attacks on vessels flagged or owned in other countries.Houthi attacks against international shipping have been carried out by drones, small boats and missiles, “including the first use of anti-ship ballistic missiles against such vessels,” the joint statement noted.“We must not overlook the root of the problem: Iran has long enabled these attacks by the Houthis,” said Christopher Lu, a U.S. representative at the United Nations. “Iran has a choice here: It can continue its current course, or it can withhold its support, without which the Houthis would struggle to effectively track and strike commercial vessels navigating shipping lanes through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.” Iran is using all these idiots to draw us in and I'm not sure they know what they are doing unless they are just trying to shore up things at home by poking the bear so they can be the "victims" of our aggression when we fight back. A LOCAL GUEST ON MEN'S HIGH SUICIDE RATES I recently had a guest on to talk about the high rates of older male suicide and she was not a good guest (sorry, they can't all be winners) but I've got a better guest today on the very important topic. Jim Kuemmerle, who is a long time behavioral health professional that has worked mainly in rural and frontier communities with older adults who is working on this issue in Colorado now. He joins me at 1:30 to talk about what's happening here for older men who may be feeling a lot less necessary these days.
