Nas said in 2007, "Hip-Hop is Dead." Whether you agree with that statement or not, there is a simple truth that we all need to acknowledge- the culture needs to change. Episode 8 has a clear title for those that understand rap as a sport and hip-hop as a culture. While the two words may be interchangeable when representing a genre of music, they stand alone in prospects. One is thriving and continuing to grow at a steady, if not recently rapid, pace, and the other is slowly fading away. The competitive sport that is the rap game has some great talent keeping the motion flowing, from established vets to this generation's finest and extremely promising newcomers. The independent wave is everything hip-hop has needed, but it may be too late to save a culture mired in evil and exploitation. We are lost in music about drugs, murder, and toxic energy. As a student of the game and an obsessive fan of the culture, it pains me to see the very thing that inspired so much of who I am today go in a direction completely countering my own growth. Unless we shift where this system is headed quickly, we'll only continue to see more of the negative cycle that has been programmed in us and consistently pushed by the unaffected profiteers. Save the music!

This was an interesting episode to record, so I imagine it'll be interesting to listen to. It's like the meme joke, "my last two brain cells fighting each other," except this is fully coherent. When you get to my economics definition confusion, ride it out with me. So, what's the overarching message of episode 7? Twitter can also go if we're actually going to ban TikTok. In truth, I have a deeper issue with Twitter than I do TikTok, but that's probably due to me using the former more frequently. I really do enjoy the bird app as a platform and concept, but there are just too many goofballs (word of the day) that are almost too active on there. Social media, as a whole, has taken a weird turn toward public relevance over private relatability; people would rather be seen by the masses than understood by the few. I, for one, look forward to the day when I no longer need the leverage of social media to spread my message. That's the leading reason I started this podcast, so maybe that day has already come. Don't be surprised when the links below no longer include social media; sooner rather than later. In a world where we are infinitely connected, it feels more separated than ever, and we know my mission is unity. I think that starts with us saying bye to these tools used for division daily and bringing connecting back to the real world.

Bonus show! This Flashback Friday episode of TMHS dives into creative kids as students and how we can serve them better. By now, you know that the central focus of my passion and mission is cultivating creativity. I believe that is especially important involving children; if we can encourage the creative spark in the kids, then we will inevitably have creatively inclined adults. I figure if I can relay some of my childhood experiences, then I can shed some light on the situations and individuals that relate to my story. As I've said, I do not have a particularly unique experience, but for that very reason, I must share what I've learned about my past so that others may process and progress as well. I hope that by reflecting on how my life has gone that I can give a voice to the voiceless, especially those that were once the loudest but have since been silenced.

Welcome back! In episode 5, I'm continuing the conversation about creativity and its importance in society. There is a shift coming to the world of education, one that is long overdue and will be the driver of cultural evolution for generations to come. The reintroduction of creativity into our schooling will be the catalyst for a new age of knowledge and way of thinking. When you look back at the great renaissances across history, the vital changes were our views on education and the arts, specifically the intersection between the two. I believe we are sitting at another such crossroads today; the only logical next step in our evolution is cultivating creativity from a young age and continuing to do so through adulthood. As the world of work shifts, so must the education system. Gone are the days when the American Dream referred to a secure job, a 30-year mortgage, and a pension plan (which won't even exist by the time Gen-Z hits "retirement age"). In a society where digital nomads and passion projects are the new norms, creativity is the driving force as we chart our paths to pursuing purpose. Let's make America creative again!

We're on episode 4 already! Crazy! This one is a two-parter; creativity is the topic all throughout this episode and the next. Today's conversation is about reframing how we look at creativity in our daily lives and shifting the trajectory of creator culture. In this episode, I discussed the idea that all humans are innately creative and how embracing and tapping into our natural creative inclinations can lead to more fulfilled lives. While some people may be more naturally inclined to be creative, it takes intentional cultivation for us to reflect that side in the real world. I also discussed how more people being open to their creative nature and living through it as a way of being would shift the economy of creator culture as more people would be motivated to pursue artistic/creative endeavors simply for their passion. Join me Thursday as I continue this conversation and tie these topics into our discussion. Thank you for being here; enjoy!

In episode 3 of The Marcus Hendricks Show, we have the first-ever Saturday Special. This bonus episode is all about self-love. We often confuse many words that contain the "self" prefix as synonymous or interchangeable. And while most of them present the same root idea of building up one's well-being in a way that best serves them, I believe that self-love is the start of all things good. Like the cliche says, "how can you expect anyone else to love you if you don't first love yourself?" People will often say how simple such a phrase makes the concept seem. And, yes, it is a process to develop and continue developing a sense of self-love, but cliches exist for a reason- they're usually simple truths.
Let's all make the effort to love ourselves a little bit better. In turn, we become better able to love those around us. Nobody said it would be easy, but it's damn sure worth it.

In this episode, we're talking about men, women, and our broken relationship culture. Why does there seem to be a gender war running through social media? I don't have the answer, but I'm diving into the root causes that I think have led to it and the issues that are sustaining it. Truthfully, we just need to be better for ourselves before trying to be anything for anyone else, but many people don't want to have that conversation. I do. I think couples could listen to this one together and maybe spark some interesting conversation. As always, you've got the full audio; the only edits are sound and silences. Keep an open mind and enjoy!
