Zoe Kennedy is the executive director of FORCE Detroit. He joined the show in January to reflect on how community violence intervention programs like his have contributed to Detroit experiencing the lowest number of homicides in the city since 1965.

Today on The Metro, we’re looking at the rise of non-mainstream medicinal practices and why people are increasingly turning to holistic health practices. Sara Herr is a former registered nurse and somatic practitioner. She owns "Tapping with Sara" in Ann Arbor, where she works to alleviate anxiety, depression, and pain by concentrating on the nervous system. Dr. Teena Chopra also joins the show. She is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University and a member of  the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

The Charles Wright Museum of African-American History is one of the most recognizable museums in the city. Its creative and eye-opening exhibits have given us a deeper, more nuanced understanding of Black life and American history. 

As Black History Month gets underway, Manager of Community Engagement Yoland Jack joins the show to share special events happening in February and how Black history is Detroit’s history. 

One of the exhibits on display until March is “I, Charles H. Wright,” taking a closer look at how the museum began. Wright was a physician that founded the Afro-American Museum in 1965. The museum was later renamed after him.

During the recent polar vortex, when temperatures dipped dangerously low, the Pope Francis Center opened a 24-hour emergency warming center at its Bridge Housing Campus. 

This is just one of many ways the center works to support people experiencing chronic homelessness in Detroit. 

The Pope Francis Day Center downtown is open daily at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church. People are served two meals a day, have access to showers and laundry, and can find information on housing assistance. 

In September, at its Bridge Housing Campus, the center welcomed its first group of residents. The Campus takes a holistic approach to supporting people in need. It provides folks with up to 120 days of housing and support services to help them carve paths out of homelessness and poverty.

WDET’s Jack Filbrandt spoke with President and CEO of the Pope Francis Center Fr. Tim McCabe about how they’re working to end chronic homelessness in Detroit.

Today The Metro revisits a particularly impactful segment on photograper Johnny Miller's project “Unequal Scenes” which uses drones to capture aerial shots of cities worldwide, from Manila in the Philippines to our own Detroit.

The images offer bird’s eye views of urban areas — a vantage point that makes the unequal distribution of wealth in some communities painfully clear.  

What lessons can we learn by viewing these images? Miller joined The Metro to discuss his inspiration behind the project and why the images are so effective at visualizing inequality.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order revoking a goal that ensured that half of new vehicles sold in the U.S. were to be battery-powered by 2030. 

The project of moving America away from Electric Vehicles may not be that simple. It’s also a directional change of where the country was going less than a year ago, with auto companies spending millions on new electric vehicles and technology. 

Wall Street Journal's Detroit Bureau Chief Mike Colias joins The Metro. He just published the book, “Inevitable,” which is about how the transition to electric vehicles is happening, despite it being a messy project.

President Donald Trump’s administration is making fast and far reaching changes to immigration in the U.S, during his first week in office, Trump signed 10 executive orders and proclamations centered on immigration. 

These policies have sent shockwaves through immigrant communities in Michigan, especially in Southwest Detroit, where a high concentration of Latino and Hispanic immigrants live.

WDET reporter Bre’Anna Tinsley spent some time in Southwest Detroit during a recent immigrant rights rally.

Late Detroiter James Wheeler curated exhibits and traveled around the world showing his rare collection of Black media. The collection of more than 40,000 pieces features film, visual arts, albums, books, magazines, artifacts and so much more. Wheeler's daughter and co-founder of The Black Canon and The Black Canon Collection Alima Trapp joins The Metro to talk about it. Also, Motor City Cinema Society co-founder John Monaghan joins the show to discuss an event showing pieces from the collection on Monday.
