"The key to life is accepting challenges. Once someone stops doing this, he's dead."
Bette Davis
How do you adjust to the things you didn't plan for?
I'd say a lot of us are getting a forced lesson in grit, persistence, and creativity. Covid-19 has impacted countless businesses, jobs, and lives, making things extremely volatile in our economy. With all this uncertainty, the choices we make now are likely to shape our future more than we think.
While some see this and freak out, others do their best to absorb the information they have, assess what they can do, and make a decision. Which one are you?
Today's guest is used to volatility. Working his way up in the restaurant business from a dishwasher and barback, Chad Gangwer now runs three restaurants in Greenville, SC. If you know anything about the industry, you know it's extremely challenging, volatile, and taxing. Chad continues to take on the challenges and increase his skills every step of the way.
The latest challenge he faces is one that has caused possibly the biggest economic shock of our time. We're talking about Covid-19.
The Coronavirus has many people staying at home practicing social distancing. Because of this, restaurants and bars find themselves on the front lines of this blitzkrieg that is this pandemic. Like many of us, everyday Chad and his team need to make the call on what to do next given the current situation.
In a time of uncertainty, the best thing to do is rely on your work ethic, lean into the people you serve, and work on getting through it together. When all this is said and done, we'll hopefully be sharing the lessons we learn from this with others in the future.
Take a listen to today's episode as Chad and I explore moving up within the ranks of a company, challenges of running a restaurant, how to constantly improve on your craft, and how we can hopefully make it through this pandemic.

"In every situation, life is asking us a question, and our actions are the answer."
Ryan Holiday, The Obstacle Is the Way
I'll be honest. I don't know exactly what's going on...
All I can tell you are the facts. However, I cannot tell you what they mean or how to interpret them.
There has been so much uncertainty and fear surrounding this Covid-19 Coronavirus outbreak. From schools closing, employees working from home, restaurants & bars shutting down their dining areas, and curfews being set, there is no denying the impact and scale of this outbreak.
Whether you agree with these measures or not, the fact remains the same. The reactions and the current situation are real. PERIOD.
So where do we go from here?
Again, I don't know.
What I do know is the way we as individuals, communities, states, and countries emerge from this Pandemic will be discussed, recorded and dissected in history. This is one of those moments in life where we will remember where we were when Covid-19 first hit.
The only question that remains moving forward is this:
"How will we write history?"
We've already seen the mass hysteria and hoarding of hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, toilet paper, bottled water, guns, and ammo. Yeah, everything is every man for himself out there.
We've also seen free food given, kind gestures, selfless acts, and shared joy and encouragement.
This is two sides of the same coin. The beauty of it is you don't have to play this one out by chance. You get to choose heads or tails. And last I checked, nobody wants to be the ass. I certainly don't want to.
How will we emerge from this Coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak?
The ink is wet, the page is blank, and the next words that get written are yours. What will it say?

“The mind has a powerful way of attracting things that are in harmony with it, good and bad.”
Idowu Koyenikan, Wealth for All: Living a Life of Success at the Edge of Your Ability
What was the last big mess up you made? Does it still sit with you? (I honestly just made a big one! Haha)
Our minds have the ability to keep us focused on the past. We replay situations, over and over, trying to figure out where things went wrong. If you’re like me, this happens all too often.
Maybe the mind pulls this trick on you in real-time and negative thoughts plague your daily life. Did you know we have anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day? Yea... Imagine how many of them are negative.
Just think about the relief and calm we can enjoy by simply letting these things go... Seriously... This is your permission to switch things up!
The challenge though is making this a daily practice.
Trust me. I know how hard it is. I’m still working on this myself.
De'Andre Presley has tasted what it’s like to perform under intense pressure. When you’re playing football at the highest level of competition, it’s important to analyze everything! It’s also important not to over-analyze.
Whether it was in college, the NFL or in the transition into “civilian life,” DeAndre would have to constantly shift his mindset and focus on the next play. It’s something we all should work on in our lives.
Take a listen as DeAndre and I explore his journey, share our thoughts on mindset, and highlight the importance of focusing on the next play.
We all make mistakes. And that’s okay. What defines us is how we choose to play the rest of this game called life.

"NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU ARE. THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL NOT. WEAR IT LIKE ARMOR, AND IT CAN NEVER BE USED TO HURT YOU."
Tyrion Lannister, Game Of ThronesIt's unreal to think of how nasty we can be to people at times. Sticks and Stones might break bones, but the words you say still matter.
Being young is hard. I think we forget sometimes.
Take yourself back for a moment and imagine you're in middle school or high school. Try to remember the social pressures. What was that anxiety like? Do you remember trying to find your crowd, find some friends, or just figure out where you fit? It's a tough time.
Thankfully, some of us grow out of that. Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet a lot of us think we've outgrown that but secretly, it still eats us up inside. Don't carry that weight anymore.
Imagine the freedom of shedding that baggage, embracing who you are and living your truth day in and day out. Admit it, that sounds amazing!
I truly admire people who are unapologetically themselves and continue to bless the world with their presence. To me, it's refreshing and inspiring. With that being said, it's no wonder I love and admire today's guest so much. David Hawkins, Founder of My PR Lab, is an example of what can happen when you embrace your truth and start living!
Born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, David would graduate from S.C. Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities before spending 13 years working in New York City & Los Angeles. He found fast success with a public relations career spanning industries including entertainment, fashion, health & beauty, lifestyle, and more.
In 2019 David founded what he and his team proudly proclaim as "the Upstate's most nontraditional PR firm", My PR Lab, in Downtown, Greenville. MY PR Lab is a full-service Public Relations and Event Management firm servicing a variety of industries.
Coming from humble beginnings, David has built himself into so much more than just a business owner. He has grown into a support system and resource for business as well as a dear friend to so many others. Believe me when I say, David's positive and supportive influence will linger in the room long after he is gone.
In today's episode, join me as we explore his story. Take a listen as we explore the importance of transparency, the benefits of embracing who we are, always showing up, and why you should work in the food industry at some point in your life. I truly hope Davids story inspires you to embrace who you are, learn to love yourself, and share your gifts with the world.
David is, and we're all lucky to enjoy the man he is today.

"EVERY LIFE COMPOSES A SONG OF IT'S OWN"
Jeff VeachI don't think it's a bold statement to assume that 90% of you reading this love music. It makes you dance, bop, tap your toe or bob your head. Admit it, you know there's that one song out there that gets you every time. It's alright, I understand.
Music is one of the most impactful things on the planet. We play it at weddings, at funerals and at everything in between. It's no wonder we have such a connection to it. It's literally a soundtrack to our lives.
I know you've heard the quote:
"MY LIFE'S LIKE A SOUNDTRACK, I WROTE TO THE BEAT"
Dr. DreSo here's the question.
What do your notes sounding like?
Remember, it's the low notes that make the high notes hit so well. How are you adjusting the pitch of your life?
My guest today is ready to turn things up a bit. Brad Keaton is a singer/songwriter out of Spartanburg, SC and has been singing for over 3 decades. Heading into 2020, Brad is writing so much more than his next batch of songs. He's writing his future.
The development and lessons learned from spending years on a craft tends to give us great insight into life. Brad takes that insight, applies it to his music and shares his truth. Take a listen to Brad's journey into his career and share in some valuable lessons about growth in just about any craft.
In this episode we discuss learning our limitations, settling into our strengths and seeing the world through a different lens. We touch on the importance of authenticity and vulnerability through the craft and the boundaries that we balance with it.

"Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength."
UNKNOWN
There is one thing that I can guarantee in life... You will be challenged.
This concept has been a constant theme on the podcast. Everything worth having in life sits on the other side of challenges. The way we respond and adjust to these challenges will greatly impact the outcome that follows.
Imagine taking that kink in your armor and turning it into your strength? How can that simple adjustment change the course of your life?
Erica Powell made the decision early in life that she wasn't going to be defined by something she couldn't control. Instead, she would go on to overcome and prosper, finding success as an entrepreneur in Greenville, SC and inspiring others as an athlete, speaker, and fitness coach.
With Erica's spirit, you know this is just the tip of the iceberg for this young woman who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of six. Progressive vision loss isn't something Erica tries to hide. A journey of reflection, perseverance, and acceptance has helped her push forward and overcoming challenges to build a promising and rewarding future.
In this episode we discuss the importance of spending time with ourselves, working on acceptance, pushing big ideas on each other, never quitting on a bad day, and so much more.
Her story is a true inspiration to all of us who are battling our own insecurities and struggling to push through and fully be ourselves. I know you'll enjoy it.
