Welcome back to another edition of The Producer’s Notes. Typically, these are the alternate episodes that we publish every other week, but for the entire month of January, we’re publishing an episode of The Producer’s Notes every week.

This week, host Jon Stinson shares some ideas around recording drums, which has been somewhat of a focus of his in recent times. Contrary to popular belief, Jon is NOT a drummer, but over his 10+ years of recording experience, he has collected quite a few skills that have shaped him into an engineer that is good at working with drummers to craft a good sound, and coaching drummers to great performances in the studio.

A little while ago, Jon recognized that recording drums is something that overwhelms a lot of people when starting out. Other more experienced people even develop a few bad habits when recording drums.

In the songwriting and record-making world, leaving something “intentionally incomplete” seems to be a more applicable way to think about it. It serves as a post-creation collaboration of sorts.

This week we have Dead Cures in the studio with us! Dead Cures is a brand new indie rock band based out of Nashville, which evolved out of the long-running Nashville indie rock band Kink Ador.

Host Jon Stinson chats with the band to talk about their “why,” the personal evolution of each band member, how they each got started in music, where the band name Dead Cures came from, and what message they are creating and empowering people with through their music.

And of course the band jams us out to some great live performances as well!

Before the mics came on we dealt with quite a bit of technical difficulties. The band waited patiently as we got that worked out, and made the show happen despite all the resistance. Only then to deal with an audio dropout right around the 12 minute mark. Ugh!
